Btw, isn't it strange how everyone focuses on AK47's? M16's are just as deadly, when they work. Admittedly the AK is a far superior design for service in rough conditions, far less likely to jam, but that doesn't make much difference if all you want to do is hold up a gas station or shoot up a school (OK, I'm just taking the piss. There seems to be some unspoken idea of AK47 = Russian = evil, M16 = American = good. Which is nonsense, of course, guns are either good at killing people or they're not.) But then, back in the thirties, the Thompson sub-machine gun had a similar reputation. There was a celebrated photo during the war of Churchill with bowler hat, cigar and Thompson gun which (IIRC) the Nazis siezed on with great glee as proving that Churchill was a gangster. Personally, I'd be far far more nervous of a law that allows ordinary citizens to buy and carry handguns for 'defence'. Check the statistics of number of people killed by silly little Saturday Night Specials vs the number killed by heavy automatic weapons and you'll see what I mean.... Actually, for robbing a bank, I think I'd choose a repeating shotgun over anything else. A far more terrifying weapon at close quarters. > Yet dispite this > cutural predisposition TV gets the blame. But there are reasons quite unrelated to TV for the violence in Iraq. In Africa, though, the West does have one huge fact on its conscience - - tribal wars are so much more effective when armed with guns. One question which Michael Moore asked in 'Bowling for Columbine' was, why the US murder rate is so high. He pointed out that other countries (notably Canada IIRC) have just as high a gun-ownership rate as the US, (and presumably watch the same TV shows), but only a fraction of the deaths. And Canada has an equally violent history. Mike didn't try to supply an answer, but it's certainly a valid question. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. There is something about testing one's self that seems to be one of humankind's facets. It doesn't matter whether it's sports, riding a rollercoaster, or going to scary movies. Xena and Gabrielle struck me as individuals who constantly tested themselves. That's why I find the find the fortune telling scene in "Tsunami" so delightful. If that fortune teller only knew how often Xena and Gabrielle tested themselves! Richan ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. The Evil Dead triology is their legacy. I'm not into horror movies myself. I don't find them scary, I tend to find them dull and predictable. The writing is usually unclever and the acting dreadful, but every once and awhile, something good does come out. I LOVE the Evil Dead movies. The second is my favourite, because it's FUNNY! Bruce is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny! The movie makes fun of itself, which makes it something new and interesting. It's the same reason I love the Scream triology (which is really not horror, but rather a slasher film, and those usually suck more than horrors!) The last movie Rob and Sam did together was "The Gift" (which, surprisingly, did not contain Bruce Campbell OR Ted Raimi). That was a great mystery/thriller/horror, and shows that they can make a creepy film with a lot more to it. The set up for "Boogyman" I think sounds really interesting. What a neat role to see Lucy in. I can't wait. If you don't like horror movies (which, hey, I usually don't either, but there are exceptions), then you're not going to want to watch anything done by Ghost House, because horror movies are why they made the prouduction house. I've never been a great fan of horror - and tastes tend to change, but there are intelligent (and funny) horror films. Keep in mind that Rob and Sam did a lot of action films that were extremely violent - Hard Target comes to mind. I think they are just plumbing the depths of a different genre. One of the best horror films, although I would classify it as more a suspense film, was Alien. (The horror for me was the slime and the alien stuck on the faces). Once I get past the slime, it is a truly scary film and I have no real problem in watching it again, primarily because the premise is reasonable, the pacing is excellent and the conclusion is so satisfying. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Xena Torres Sent: Thursday, October 14, 2004 1:44 PM To: chakram-refugees@smoe.org Subject: RE: [chakram-refugees] The Grudge Rob and Sam started in the business making horror movies.
