Friday, October 8 @ 9pm ET/PT As the Roman Empire's farthest flung province, Britain's merchants enjoyed a healthy trade with Roman Gaul, and for about 100 years, the tribes were mainly left alone. But in 60 AD, a warrior queen named Boudicca rose in revolt. When her husband died, Boudicca became Queen of the Iceni. Roman administrators tried to control the Iceni by appropriating their land and disarming the tribe. After the Romans flogged Boudicca and raped her two daughters, she raised a mighty army believed to number over 100,000 and took the fight to the Romans. The complete Wonderfalls 13 episode DVD set is coming out in January 2005! So it won't compete with Xena DVDs Xmas presents. :~) And I'll finally get to hear Caroline Dhavernasb(heroine Jaye Tyler) real French-Canadian accent. She fakes nasal American real well. The linking info about all this is on the site-- www.savewonderfalls.com/ - --where you can also find 12 of the 13 Wonderfalls scripts. And other goodies. The site and campaign is so well-organized that I suspect some Xena fans must be behind it. :~) Yeah, I agree with you Meredith, I didn't get Wonderfalls cancellation. I found it so hysterically funny and so different that as I was watching the pilot, I thought something like, "Wow! This is so good, it doesnbt even seem like an American TV show." Not demeaning my entire sex, just the ones that run FOX, and not demeaning Eliza, I think sticking with True Calling, might have something do with Elizabs character wearing more sexy clothing and running a lot. I suspect FOX powers might be thinking more of an imanginary panting male audience. It might still not have hit them yet that women and men like a woman as a adventure/action heroine. Some FOX execs probably think Xena was so popular becasue the stars wore skimpy clothing. And I understand the ratings were low. But I googled Wonderfalls shortly after it was cancelled and besides a small passionate fan base, many TV critics loved the show. From the leftie Village Voice to the righty ;-) Weekly Standard. The Standard critic wrote (and I agree) it was the best new TV show since "Karen Sisco." (Is there some sort of pattern there? :->) Aren't fans and great critical reaction an incentive? But Fox didnbt even try to save Wonderfalls. Why? Especially since FOX took the trouble to save that smug sit-com that won an Emmy. And that is still one of the lowest rated shows ever! And the only fan-base for that is among TV critics. Just remembered the name - - "Arrested Development." And there is not just numbers--wouldn't Wonderfalls be a good candidate to reach the coveted female advertising base that networks covet? Maybe FOX powers thought only troubled slackers, like the shows heroine Jaye, would watch, and they don't spend much. Maybe the very funny and realistic ongoing sub-plot about Jaye's sister trying to sustain a romantic relation with her new girlfriend without the parents finding out, made the powers of FOX nervous? Explanation here - The first episode shows God (or some type of supernatural power for good) use Jaye so her closeted gay sister can get a great girlfriend. Sub-text is that God (the UNIVERSE) loves lesbians. That might have made FOX really nervous. You won't see that plot happening on "Joan of Arcadia!" One site I found was a Buffy forum where someone wrote that Wonderfalls cancellation made them realize how lucky Buffy fans were-that Buffy came along probably at the only time it could have come along and been accepted by its studio and allowed to be a success. And of course, we were double lucky with Xena. I mean BESIDES the obvious of Xena coming along on H:TLJ at the most inconvenient time so they had to settle (HA!) for their very last choice to play Xena. Rob probably sold the idea of show to the studio at the ideal time. Would they have bought the idea a few months later? Might studio powers even wanted to hedge their bets by recasting with a more well-known actress? SHUDDER! ***************************** _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? However the main problem I still have with it (besides Monkeyman whom I do like more but I'm still grateful to the Hindu protest that made sure we never saw him again) is the whole theme of non-violence. I don't see why TPTB introduced this theme when no one seemed to have any idea as to how to handle it. When Gabrielle and Eli are captured by Indrajit Eli says the struggle is between his way (peace and love) and Indrajit evil (cruelty and violence). That's a good premises for any drama but suddenly Xena appears and tries to solve the problem with violence and is defeated (arms chopped off) now would be the perfect time for Eli to step in and solve the conflict showing that his way is stronger. instead Xena prays to Krishna and is transformed into one of the most violent Indian gods, Kali. So she is now as violent and cruel as Indrajit. Frankly I don't see what the point of this whole episode was besides making sure Xena felt secure in her way as a warrior. What I have always wonder was how the series could have handled the theme of pacifism in a better manner. Does anyone on the list have any ideas? ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
