Mr. Hillerman writes mystery novels set in New Mexico. His detectives are Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. They work for Navajo Tribal Police. In SACRED CLOWNS Jim Chee takes in a Hopi festival featuring Katsina dancers. Katsina dancers represent the various gods, goddesses and forces of nature governing the Hopi outlook on life. Man is also represented in the dances. The dancers portraying man are clowns. As clowns they show how far man has swerved from the path the gods had intended for him to follow. Often working in teams these Koshares mock those things which divert Hopis from their true walk in life. In the novel Chee and his boss Leaphorn struggle to understand just what Chee has seen at the festival. A Koshare pulling a wagon with items to be mocked enters the crowd and the crowd instead of laughing grows uncharacteristically silent. What is in the wagon? Enough. Anymore and I'll spoil the story. And yes by now you're thinking TPTB made use of a recurring Koshare in XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. Yep. That's right Joxer. Probably his finest hour, er worst hour? was LYRE, LYRE and his "homophobia." This episode could even be taken to speak of fears in general and the time we waste worrying about them. If you only have so much time to live, can you really afford to get bogged down worrying about your fears? How far can we be driven from our paths, Xena's way of the warrior, Eli's way of love, Gabrielle's way of friendship? Yes TPTB can sometimes be rather preachy. But that's not really a bad thing is it? Now as to whether Joxer is sacred well... It is being repeated 8/10 on a lot of PBS stations. It is a fascinating look at the women who may have inspired the legend of the Amazons and even more impressive is the archaeologist for whom the Amazons have become an obsession. Jeannine Davis-Kimball has made it her life's work to track down the origins of the Amazons. It is truly amazing to watch as she and her Russian colleague, Dr. Yoblonsky, uncover the rich burial site of a woman warrior priestess. That however is only the beginning of this adventure. It is of course no secret now that it is believed that there were warrior women living on the steppes of Russia but Kimball-Davis shows us the ancient evidence the these women may have been the prototype for the Amazon myths. She then takes to a lab in Germany where DNA from the women warrior she and Dr. Yoblonsky excavated years ago will be analyzed. Then she off on an odyssey the far reaches of Mongolia to search for the descendents of the Amazon women of Russia. The documentary now takes on the air of a thriller. Will the lab back in Germany find enough viable DNA to analyze? Will Davis-Kimball find the a blond Mongol for a DNA sample? And if she does will it match the DNA from a 2500 year old woman warrior from Russia? If you don't find warrior women fascinating enough then you should definitely be impressed with Kimball-Davis. This woman who seems to have inexhaustible curiosity and energy is probably at an age when most people are retired. She and her colleague, Dr. Yoblonsky, are probably the best examples of how to stay young. They are fascinated by the world around them. Kimball-Davis finds everyone she meets fascinating - be they renown DNA experts to Mongol nomads. She is a remarkable woman. Here are a few of my favorite parts. In Mongolia three office ladies leave their jobs for an afternoon to don traditional costumes and do some spot on archery with traditional weapons. In the far reaches of Mongolia the nomadic women are wearing blue jeans. A young belong Mongol girl joyously rides her Mongol pony. This is terrific stuff. Now for our Xena moment. There is of course some actors re-enacting the ancient warrior women of the steppes. They have tradition costumes on. As I am watching these ladies I notice something very odd - they seem to wearing Amarice's hat from Endgame. Remember Amarice had that Peter Pan hat - well these ladies were wearing that hat. Now I have to give credit to Nigla Dickson that she that bit of obscure costuming right. Now it might have been accident but I doubt it since there were Greek pottery with those hats on them. I have to say I am impressed with those people who did Xena. The played Hobbes with history and then get small details so right it's mind-boggling.
