I think she chose conditions that would pretty much assure fighting them one at a time and fighting each one once. This doesn't diminish the fact that she still had quite a few to deal with or that she essentially beat them at their own game. Psychologically, it must've been demoralizing in a number of ways. I simply believe the element of surprise, the chance to plan beforehand and the Amazons' emotions helped neutralize their numbers advantage. I don't know how well Xena would've done if, say, they'd caught her out in the open when she was attacking that Amazon she killed. Xena was known for being strategic in addition to her prowess as a warrior. To me, that's what gave her the edge. It's interesting to me that she fled, the first time she realized that Cyane might be superior to her in ways she hadn't seen before. She didn't challenge Cyane until she'd learned enough to believe she could win. Even then, she didn't challenge Cyane to a duel of some sort. No, she wanted to win *and* wipe out any chance of resistance -- any need to woo them as allies -- plus assure herself of Alti's help in making her Destroyer of Nations. So, when you said she proved she was a better fighter than Cyane, I saw it less as fighting ability and more about her brain and the qualities that would make her formidable not just as a warrior but as a commander - -- e.g., "battle vision," ego, cunning, ruthlessness. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. The director's cuts bits are worth the price alone. OK realistically I am not going to get excited over the alternate graphics (does it matter if the rat toss in LUTD was nose over tail or straight up?) or a few extra words from some minor character. But.... A Good Day has given us years of discussions about Gabrielle's missed spear throw and the death of Phlanagus. Yet here is the missing scene where Xena and Gabrielle discussed it. The ultimate opinion if ever there was one. They took the same points of view as we did - that there were essentially two schools of thought. Either Gabrielle intended to kill him, but hadn't the skill (as Gabrielle said) or that she had the skill but pulled the throw at the last minute (as Xena said). What was new was that Xena said she had done exactly the same thing when her village was attacked, with the same result, that someone died. Then Locked Up and Tied Down got criticised for the speed with which Gabrielle and Thalassa bonded and for the unfathomable chronology. It seemed that Gabrielle arrived and within one brief conversation with Thalassa she had completely bonded and knew everything about the prison and what had happened to Xena. That was fast even by Gabrielle's standards. Yet here were several missing scenes filling in the gaps. We had Gabrielle and Thalassa talking intimately and we had Gabrielle explaining about Xena and Thalassa actually listening to her point of view. We discovered how Gabrielle found her way round the prison and knew where Xena was, Gabrielle talking to the other prisoners and much more explanation from Thalassa about what had really happened. Even a fuller end scene with Xena and Thalassa. The full version fills in the plot holes. The extra scenes for Between The Lines (love this ep) actually didn't add much. One of the beauties of this episode is the stunning visuals and the extra material didn't have much of that. OK, it was interesting to see Renee performing an extended sequence in front of a green screen, but the shorter version with the visual effects was so much better. LIkewise I think the ending was tighter without the extra material from Arminestra, Shakti amd Khidrun - that was a nice idea, but it would have taken away from the pace of the drama. We definitely want more of these. :-) Ann ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Incidentally, when Xena killed that Amazon, she was up a tree also, since the Amazon fell / was pushed. But I agree with your main point, if the Amazons had caught Xena out in the open she might have had a hard time of it. Though I guess we're used to Xena as the superhero who could fight her way out of almost anything.... > Xena was known for being strategic in addition to her prowess as a warrior. > To me, that's what gave her the edge. Yes, Xena's unexpected declaration of war took the Amazons by surprise, and to that extent was cunning etc. *But*, it was also highly reckless to take them all on at once. It was a risk she could have avoided by, as I said, bushwhacking them one at a time. So there were distinct limits to her cunning - or she just had a reckless streak. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Byron Allen is a 3rd-rate comedian (IMO) who's been doing these cheap filler-type celebrity interview shows for years (and not been promoted to any better time slot). They usually show right before the early news, around 4:30 am here (i.e., when no rational person except those getting home from graveyard shifts would be up). He's very corny, self-centered, and unskilled as an interviewer (again, IMO), and I cringe whenever I see a big-name celebrity on his show, because to me it would be the kiss of death to be in the same studio as he. (I.e., he always tries to get *himself* in on the interview, asking the celebrity if he could be his/her next star/caddy/make-up artist, etc., thereby taking the spotlight _away_ from the celebrity and putting it on himself. ;=P ) In any case, it's a syndicated show, he's been promoting the site (a Sony site), so I'm sure there's more info there. Also, since it's a filler show, his interviews often get repeated over and over and over.......:/ I don't know why LL agreed to be interviewed by him, but knowing she takes every offer seriously, I guess she thought she was just doing her "soldiery" part.
