I always regard Xena as the unacknowledged god of the Amazon nation. 'God' in the sense of the force that has had the greatest influence on their destiny. But I guess we'll have to see the movie to find out by how much. ;) (Not that the legendary Guinevere was remotely warlike anyway. Not that that's got anything to do with the movie, of course.) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Whatever, I saw little honorable in the way Xena chose > to defeat Cyane. Yes Xena did choose the conditions - but as she implied, she was taking on the Amazons head-on on their own ground. NO advantage to her there! Second, Xena was (obviously) greatly outnumbered. If her aim had been just to destroy the Amazon leaders in the most effective way, she would have ambushed them individually, not taken them on all at once. Admittedly, up in the trees, it made it more difficult for the Amazons to attack Xena simultaneously, but it did mean the by the time she faced Cyane she'd just had to face a dozen individual Amazons one after the other. This was _not_ to her advantage. Of course, we don't know whether those traps were the Amazons' own, or Xena's, and if they were Xena's, whether they were of her own devising or she learnt them from the Amazons. From her phrase 'out-Amazon the Amazons' I'd be inclined to believe, if they were Xena's, that she got the principles at least from the Amazons. Still, even with those, it was a highly dangerous environment to be fighting in and a dozen practised Amazon leaders were not to be taken lightly. And finally, if by the time her turn came, Cyane hadn't got it together and regained her focus, she can't have been much of a fighter. She should have been saying, in effect, 'You're in _my_ backyard now, pal' (to echo Ares in another ep). She certainly should not have let Xena walk all over her. Yes, the unexpectedness should have been a point in Xena's favour, but that should only be a slight edge against all the advantages Cyane should have had. I agree, there was nothing remotely honourable in the fact of Xena's doublecross. As against that, if there is any honour to be found in 'giving a sucker an even break' (and I agree there isn't much), Xena's entitled to that for her boldness in attacking them head-on and not just bushwhacking them one by one. As to what her victory 'proved' - I think it _does_ prove she was physically superior (by which I mean, a more skilled fighter). She beat them all in their own element. But I don't think it indicates she was more wiley. If she had been wiley she would have done what I said - bushwhacked them one at a time. Tackling them all head-on was reckless to the point of foolhardiness. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
