I wasn't going to chance an online order that could very easily end up minus the exclusive bonus content. There were easily a dozen copies of the DVD set, all with the bonus material. Price on the DVD set itself read $51.99, but the shelf price was $49.99. I'm not sure if that's just for this week or not. *** My only rant is the "imbecile" who dreamed up the packaging. Now I'll admit to having a very limited DVD collection, and maybe this is standard operating procedure for large DVD sets, but what moron designs a case where you have to remove one CD from its spindle to get to the one underneath?! He should be fired -- right after he's shot. *** Since it was my birthday yesterday, I thought I would splurge and also picked up a copy of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' for $9.99 plus the special edition of 'Whale Rider' for $14.99. And to make the day complete, I traveled to the west end of town where a friend of mine told me there was a larger State Store with a better selection. To my delight I found a nicely well-stocked selection of New Zealand wines. So now I'm home with Xena in my DVD and a bottle of red and a bottle of white NZ wine chilling in the fridge. :) - -- Cousin Liz eas01@fast.net Soulmates Xena Dinosaur Bards http://cousinliz.com ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. When Anokin rejects her Xena says "that's the problem with the dead you can't take revenge on them." To which Alti replies something like "hee hee wanna bet" (I paraphrase). It is Anokin's rejection of Xena that gives Alti the ability to influence Xena. Alti uses Xena to get her revenge on Cyane and the Amazons that goes beyond just murder but the imprisonment of their souls. Anokin's rejection of Xena is a pivotal moment in the episode - Anokin by saying Xena destroyed her soul just reinforces Xena's own growing opinion of herself as corrupting and evil. It is this opinion that Alti nurtures so Xena will eventually kill the Amazons for her. I can't remember. :( Let's remember.... "The Way" aired in Canada and the US just fine. Then, major backlash, and the ep was pulled for...oh I think seven months or so, meaning, it would not be repeated nor played in other countries. Between TPTB and the fans, we managed to bring back "The Way" HOWEVER, there was a moment cut. Now, it was TEENIE, TINY, but bloody hell, that's not the point: This is a DVD, why is it being censored? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! For those who don't rememeber, the moment cut was from the the opening of the second act. Hanuman has picked up Xena, and in the UNCUT version, Xena headbutts him. This headbutt was removed from "The Way" when it was returned to tv. Now, granted, having watched the DVD bonuses, (the creature shop featurette in particular), I can understand how having this very important religious figure being headbutted would be offensive, but, hey, don't like it don't watch it. I don't believe in censorship. Let grown adults make their own choices in life for what they want to watch. And, frankly, I don't want to watch a cut version of an episode I really enjoy. This means I will be forever subjected to watching it on an ever degrading tape recording made during the first airing. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :P BATTLE ON XENA! Seven hours later.... I have now viewed ALL bonus material (except the AUDIO commentary, though I've watched the VIDEO commentary) of the season four DVDs. Here's what I gotta say: EP INTERVIEWS: Though there are not interviews for every ep as there was for the season three DVDs, the interviews for this set are about twice as long running 14-16 min or so (season three was more 6-7). There's about two interviews per DVD. I LOVE these things, and I really recommend watching them BEFORE sitting down to watch the eps, because all new insight is granted for you to think about when you are watching the ep. I am constantly amazed though that when you talk to all parties involved in an ep (actor, director, writer, producer) that not everyone arrives at the same motivation or answer to an episode. This BAFFLES me. Even if the director or writer saw it one way, ladies and gents, all that matters in the end is HOW DID THE *ACTOR* PLAY IT!? Oye! Doesn't matter what you WANTED, the end result for the VIEWER is what the ACTOR gives us. For example, I was shocked to learn that Rick (the director of "Locked Up and Tied Down") believes that Xena INTENDED to kill Thalassa! Gee, maybe he should have told Lucy that, cause she played pure shock on her face when she came back with her army and the villagers to find Thalassa gone. There's NO doubt to me that Xena did NOT mean for that to happen. The endless debate on Gab tossing the javelen in "A Good Day." Liz and Eric say she just missed cause she didn't know how to throw it. Interesting since in the script AND in cut scene (well, extended scene) shown to us (disc 9), Steven WROTE that Gab PULLED her throw. He explained it VERY perfectly in the interview that if Gab had not intended to kill the Roman, she never would have picked up the javelen in the first place. No, she picked it up with every intent in her mind to throw it (and HAS the skill to do so), but (as he explained happens with law inforcement officers), though her mind said yes, her natural instict/gut/heart made her jerk and miss. Anyway, to the point, gotta love the interviews. Though, I have some concern with one of the DP (not Duncan, the other guy who's name escapes me), cause he's a little dull. Even I as one INTERESTED in the whole tv/movie making process was bored. Namely cause he's a little dry for the public speaking. But also, for a 14 minute interview, talk to me about story and character growth and don't waste 3 minutes on the back lighting for one shot. Though I'd care in an hour long documentary, I really don't for such a limited time period, cause stuff so much more important to the fan base is left out. I DO want the DP and editing stuff included, but don't cut into the more important (to viewers, I know it's ALL important) stuff to put it in there. I find editing a very interesting topic, and I enjoyed Rob Field at the 2001 con, but, TOO MUCH, SLOW discussion on the editing of two shots of "Ides" where there's oh so much more one wants to know. Love, love Hudson. She's great for interviews. Just a thought though, can't we have more actors? I would love to have heard some input from Claire on "Sin Trade" for example or Kathryn Morris on "Crusader" or "Convert." Alex on "If the Shoe Fits..." ex. Oh, and one question...Jane Holland (costume designer for seasons 4-6) was listed on the box as being included, but I didn't see her anywhere. FEATURETTES: "Adventures in the Sin Trade: An Exploration": OOOOOH! I REALLY liked this! VERY, VERY interesting. A look into Kung-Fu from Wong and then a truly fasinating look into Amazons, and Shamanism from a woman who's name I forget, but it was really interesting. I REALLY loved learning what all the pieces of Xena's outfit meant. All this amazing and interesting detail that you would never know was there by just looking. This was a GREAT featurette! "Bringing Monsters to Life": *smacks head* How did I say there was no 'monsters' in season four? It's the ONLY season to have an ep with a monster that's part of the ruddy script. Uh, duh XT, THE DESTROYER maybe! ;) Anyway...I'm half and half on this. I LOVED the clips of the arm rigs on set of "The Way," the Hanuman tests and the Destroyer tests, but I did feel that the first half of the featurette trails because we see nothing Xena, as this was made NOW as opposed to when the company was actually making stuff for Xena. *rolls eyes* A bit dry, but still good to watch. "Cabin Fever": ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TED AND BRUCE RULE! This is a featurette of Bruce and Ted interviewing each other. Though there's some great behind the scenes stuff learned, this is mostly laugh your ass off funny. Just, WATCH THIS! TOO FUNNY! I wanna see Ted in person again, cause I'd have him autograph my photo 'T Money.' (you'll get it when you see it). BLOOPERS: ONE extended blooper (Lucy's rumbling stomach during "A Good Day") and oddly, an added blooper from "To Helicon and Back" where an amazon cuts off a guy's leg, and when the director yells "Cut" she runs back, picks up the leg and begins to beat him with it. Very funny, though you'd think we'd see that for season six. Again, less than on the Creation fan club video and HORRIBLE quality! What the hell!? Grainy, horrible sound. WHY? COMMENTARY: Okay, no MENTION of the Video commentary, but they are there. Phew. I really enjoy those. Though I like the choices of eps and very much the selection of the people viewing them, I wanted more. Season three had a very nice set up, and now I am spoiled. I can't believe there was no commentary for "Sin Trade." We've yet to have commentary from the talented T.J. Scott; that would have been a good one. OR Lucy with Claire! I would have liked commentary on "Endgame" by, here's an interesting combo, Danielle and Jennifer; one of their exit, and one on their enterance to the series. - -30 minute bonus interview: Like this would suck? Impossible. Keep 'em coming! - -'DIRECTOR'S CUTS': Er...these AREN'T director's cut. They are deleted and rough scenes. I love, love, love them don't get me wrong, but don't advertise them as a director's cut. A director's cut is the WHOLE ep, cut as the director ideally would have told the story is not pressed for time, or censors or producers. Currently, the only director's cut we have of Xena is "FIN." THAT is a director's cut. These are not. Though I love having the cut footage, and at least they are shown in a way that we know where they go in a scene, but it's simply not the same thing. This is exactly what we had for "Sacrifice" on the season three DVDs with cut scenes, extended footage and rough daillies (green screens, wires, no graphics). Please advertise them as such. A director's cut is high quality that allows one to HEAR and see (they were annoyingly small as they were shown in an un-optional split screen with the aired version). Am I happy with the bonus features? Of course, it's NEW Xena stuff. It's impossible NOT to be happy. Could it be better? Oh, yes, certainly. BATTLE ON XENA!
