Arnold said he was a history buff and a movie fan but he was always annoyed at historical inaccuracies in movies. He went on about Troy. He closed by saying-- One of the trailers (I still call 'em previews) before Troy started was for another retelling of an old myth, this one called King Arthur. Of course, I'll go see it, even if it appears to make over Geneviere into some sort of Xena clone. You never know. Maybe this time they'll get it right, even though they never get it right. I'm a history buff too. For me knowledge of history made Xena more enjoyable because I could appreciate that the Xena-makers knew a lot about ancient history and lore and I could spot how they played with the facts and the traditions. I agree, but the difference is, Xena never tried to be accurate. They just had fun. I LOVE how they took REAL events and just popped Xena in (the best examples of this being "Destiny," "When in Rome..." and "Antony and Cleopatra" which were historical events). I also like the tongue in cheek uses of some characters such as Livia. But "Troy" is trying to look 'cool' and they fall on their faces when they can't even get simple historical facts straight such as the fact that no one rode horseback in 1200 BC. Horses were used to pull chariots only (hence the big deal in the mythology of the battle of Troy when Queen Penthesilea RODE in with her 12 Amazons) BATTLE ON XENA! I'm glad that at least Lucy was good. I will of course buy the DVD because like you I am a hard core nutball. I however was thinking that it is interesting if not a bit cynical that Dreamworks puts out a R rated picture that is targeted to a teen audience that can't see it in theaters because of the R rating and then puts out an unrated DVD which in all probablity will be purchased by mainly the very teens that couldn't see the R rated film in the theaters. This is a novel approach to skirting the MPAA ratings system. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I also like the tongue in cheek >uses of some characters such as Livia. Agreed 100%. In the same vein, allow me to recommend the book I'm reading right now: _Ilium_, by Dan Simmons. It's a science fiction novel taking place in the far, far, far, far, far future where modern-day scholars are resurrected by the Greek Gods (who live on Olympus Mons on Mars, of course) to observe the Trojan War, which is going on back on Earth in real time, and report back to the Muses on the accuracy of the _Iliad_. There's tons of other stuff going on too, but that's one of the main plots. It's lots of fun. >But "Troy" is trying to look 'cool' and they fall on their faces when they >can't even get simple historical facts straight such as the fact that no >one rode horseback in 1200 BC. Horses were used to pull chariots only >(hence the big deal in the mythology of the battle of Troy when Queen >Penthesilea RODE in with her 12 Amazons) This sort of thing drives me 'round the bend as well. Just last week I watched a History Channel documentary about the Huns and their incursions into the Roman Empire, and I almost threw something through my tv screen when I noticed that the Romans and Huns alike were all using stirrups.
