Was that indeed a big deal? hmmmmmmm. well, since i've seen many interracial couples kissing since star trek, and have been in many theaters where others were reacting to same....well, yes and no. first, to stay on the star trek episode (which by chance, in this conversation, i happened to catch on TV today), that in the 1960's U.S. it was unusual to see ANY one african, asian hispanic native american, heritage unless a stereotype. the first time an african american person appeared on a tv commercial, i still remember was sometime in the 60's, and still remember that it was a commercial for beer, and three men in a row across were playing banjo, and one of them was african-american....it was a very big deal. sometimes i wonder if film/tv makers, sometimes use interracial relationships just for shock value, rather than real caring relationships. although marcus and xena's relationship, in the way the actors played it out, was real caring.... to further answer your question, cr...i have interracial married/partnered friends. and sometimes, no matter how progressive we believe we are (meaning, we the general public), they (my friends) just don't walk out in public togethr as much. it's true. i'm in a slightly more conservative part of the midwest (u.s.) in some respects, but progressive in other ways. my guess...and i believe this is true for the media in general, is that it's less of a big deal to see it on screen, but in real life, it's still, in many parts of this country, not completely accepted for people to be involved in interracial relationships. even kissing as friends. but that's where i live. speak up, other US'ers. Yes, I did know exactly what you meant, but I've never been one to let that get in the way of a bit of creative misinterpretation 'Tiff' in the sense of a minor disagreement, is correct, however its connotations (in NZ usage) really don't help your case . Here it's almost always used with reference to a disagreement between a married / de facto couple, or at least a couple with a close relationship. So saying Jackie and I were having a 'tiff' would imply - umm, roughly what my original comment did. ;) For example, Xena and Gabs might have a 'tiff', but not Xena and Joxer, say. > :) > > I was telling (i hope you don't mind) a friend about this today, and she > shared with me that she once read how the word "napkin" is used differently > in New Zealand, Britain and the U.S. Of course In don't mind, I posted it in a public (well semi-public) forum didn't I? 'Napkin' - hmmm, the British (and probably the original NZ) meaning was the white cloth things placed by one's plate at the dinner table. Very possibly 'nappy' (as applied to babies' backsides) was derived from the same source but any lexical connection between nappies and napkins had completely disappeared. Since then of course, we have that awful term 'sanitary napkins' inflicted on us by the avdertising industry meaning, umm, nappies. What it means in the US I don't know. Of course there are many other examples of words that have subtly different meanings or are regarded in subtly different ways in Britan, NZ and the US. 'Bugger!' is now accepted as a mild general purpose swearword in New Zealand. I was watching the commentary (by John Cleese) of A Fish Called Wanda, and he commented that where Ken (Michael Palin), thinking Otto (Kevin Kline) is gay, says to Otto "At least I don't b-b-bugger people" that always gets a laugh from British audiences and not at all from US ones. > cr asked, > > Umm, what about the Xena - Marcus kiss? Sometimes they can surprise everybody, as when the citizens of Masterton (which one would put down as a conservative 'white' farming district and the least likely area to be liberal or left-leaning) elected Georgina Beyer, a transsexual Maori, first as their mayor then as their MP. Auckland, OTOH, is full of Asian immigrants of various flavours, and of course many Maoris and Pacific Islanders. Generally, there's quite a lot of verbal prejudice directed against various groups (not to their face!) around our morning tea table, but none directed at individuals. That is to say, it's commonly accepted 'wisdom' that all Asians are terrible incompetent drivers, or that all Islanders have huge families draining the country's social services, _but_ I don't think I have ever seen a member of a minority openly rebuffed because of their race. It would cause no particular notice if someone from work turned up at a social event with a Chinese / Indian / Maori spouse / partner. So in that respect, your remark about 'conservative but progressive in other ways' applies here too. Not quite on the topic but I do recall, in Rarotonga 30 years ago, occasionally I'd be in a bar or some social gathering and I'd suddenly notice I was the only white face in the place. It was highly disconcerting and a little intimidating. I soon got used to it, helped by the fact that nobody else took the slightest notice of it. Still, I could see how my wife (who is a Cook Islander) could feel very shy at first in New Zealand crowds where almost everybody else was 'white'. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
