I think Xena didn't notice hardly any darn new thing about Gabrielle. Aside from, as always, doing anything necessary to keep her safe. As I said before, she supported Gabrielle in whatever she did. In her coming in and in her going out. But in Season four, Xena's a total mess due to the crucifixion vision. Because seeing that makes her start to question her whole life, thinking over what kind of life has she lived that would lead to an end like that. And again, the worst aspect to her is that Gabrielle has to die horrifically also, just because she has become part of Xena's life. The result is that we get an indecisive, insecure, beatable up by anybody Warrior Princess, one who now asks strangers for advice, HELL, asks suspect ENEMIES for advice, a person who has lost all her surety, her confidence, and her trust and belief in herself. And many fans (me included) had MAJOR problems with this representation of the WP. It wasn't until The Way that the whole subtle sub-journey Xena was on became apparent. And THAT subtext made the season one fine piece of work, once every nuance of what was really happening came into focus. The insecure Xena and the apparent focusing on the sidekick's story led to the first serious drop in ratings the series had. For the first time EVER after the India arc, the ratings slipped to 3 something. A significant drop from the 6's and 5's of season 3. (Although 3 somethings is considered good ratings for a genre syndicated show.) I felt Lucy reacted more to ROC because of all that, > which is the "role reversal" I meant. Hmmm. I didn't notice that at all. I just saw Xena changed in how she reacted to the world. But not at all in how she reacted to Gabrielle. No, no, I saw those other parts at least the first time I watched an ep. I don't fast forward through an ep the FIRST time it airs--I might miss a second or two of Lucy! It's very true though that if there's a discussion on it, I would have to go back and rewatch those parts, unlike the Lucy parts that oddly enough I've almost got memorized...grin. I just have to repeat that I can't emphasize enough what an absolutely AMAZING accomplishment it was for Lucy that she got me to watch this genre. I just get bored out of my skull with most T&A action adventure shows. In fact, Hercules is playing every day on Sci Fi channel here. I check out each one hoping it's one of the crossover sets. And when I find it's not, I leave the show on but I lose interest within about 5 minutes or so. It just doesn't catch me. I'd much rather read or take a walk than spend my time watching this type of stuff. And Lucy lite eps are pretty much the same for me. A significant drop from the 6's and 5's of season 3. (Although > 3 somethings is considered good ratings for a genre syndicated show.) >> You know, I was particularly interested in what Xenastaff (Liz Friedman and I *think* R.J. Stewart in particular) had to say about ratings. They talked about the usual drop that occurs after two seasons, how the characters often get stale. They talk about all the reasons they wanted to put X&G "through the wringer" in S3 and "throw everything possible" at them to test their relationship. I got the feeling they expected drop-offs might occur for a variety of reasons, many of which they couldn't control, but that they were going to "shake things up" in a way that might be exciting to viewers *and* in keeping with "pushing the envelope" standards Xenastaff had set for themselves. They couldn't predict the effect it would have short term, but I think they believed they broke barriers and achieved a depth that people would appreciate more over the long term. They blieve it's precisely what the characters went through that made people understand how extraordinary they were and the lasting strength of their love for each other. Even in retrospect, knowing what the ratings were, Xenastaff seem genuinely confident that they made the right decision and have few or no regrets -- certainly not in terms of ratings. They talk about losing some viewers, but I think they believe they kept or attracted the viewers who would appreciate what they were doing. I always wondered how much concern they had about the potential fall-out of completely messing with X&G and the relationship the way they did in seasons 3&4. Turns out they thought about it quite a bit and are still very proud of taking the "bold" risks. Considering the show's continuing reputation, maybe they were right about forging ahead despite initial ratings. > > > I felt Lucy reacted more to ROC because of all that, > >which is the "role reversal" I meant. > > > Hmmm. I didn't notice that at all. I just saw Xena changed in how she > reacted to the world. But not at all in how she reacted to Gabrielle. >> When people change, it also means they see things differently. Changes in their goals, their circumstances, their confidence, their abilities, their relationships, etc. cause them to notice, appreciate, fear, question, react in different (new) ways. Xena wasn't reacting to "the" world. She reacted to *her* world, which Gabrielle was integral to. Alti's vision changed Xena on many levels. One minute Xena saw herself as alone again, stronger in her confidence in her own "light." The next minute she discovers Gabs is alive and sees herself reuniting with Gabs, perhaps as they were in the past. The next minute she realizes her key role as Gabs' companion and protector may in fact get Gabs killed. Sure, that was always a possibility. Now Xena believes it will happen -- not from some accident or stray arrow, but because Gabs seems destined to share Xena's fate. Xena can't take herself, Gabs or their being together for granted in the way she could before. She doesn't trust herself anymore to know what direction might be best. She's more willing to follow Gabs' instincts, more focused on letting Gabs find her own way. It's not just the usual respect for Gabs as an equal partner or support for Gabs' dreams. She also sees Gabs as the primary victim if she herself is wrong in following her own instincts. It's ironic. One minute it's like, "Gabrielle knows best what she needs." The next, Xena makes a unilateral decision to leave, like a parent who knows what's best for her child. She treats Gabs as though Gabs is more fragile, not because she is, but because Xena is so worried about doing something that will break Gabs. In the scenes with Aiden and Njara, Xena listens with her usual skepticism. Yet she essentially defers to Gabs ("Sure, if that's what you want") even when her instincts are screaming, "It's too good to be true." In the past, Xena never would've backed off like that, without at least remaining more vigilant or insisting that Gabs respect her greater experience (as with Hope). She's willing to leave Gabs in Aiden's and Njara's hands in a way she wouldn't have before. She's focused on *wanting* to find good (the glass half full, rather than half empty) where she doesn't necessarily see it, because she wants so badly for Gabs to find joy, meaning, a "good" life -- which she fears Gabs can't have at her side. I wasn't initially looking for such changes. I discovered them in Lucy's wonderful performance -- little glances, small shrugs of reluctant resignation, moments of poignant tenderness where Xena enjoys being with Gabs while fully aware that the next moment could be the one when they'd be apart in life or die together. At first I attributed it to changes in Gabs, in terms of what she'd gone through in S3. But I realized that Gabs wasn't all that different, in terms of her curiosity about different beliefs, willingness to give people the benefit of the doubt or desire for more peace and less violence. What mainly changed was Xena -- her own conflictedness, her greater openness to giving Gabs space, her struggle to keep Gabs safe when she herself might be the biggest threat. Yes, Xena's world had changed. How could she not see or react to Gabs differently, when she'd seen that world end like her worst nightmare -- Gabrielle on a (presumably) Roman cross, with Xena helpless to do anything about it? - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Oh great, drop a bomb on us and then run away!! ;) By "walked out", do you mean "entered the stage", or "got disgusted by his teenage boorishness, said 'screw this, I'm going home' and left the stage"??? LOL! No, I was just stunned to see her. I hadn't heard anywhere that she was going to be on last night. Which is REALLY odd because the Flawless group is very good at finding this stuff out and letting us all be ready with our VCRs warmed up and humming. Or, did I just fall off my e-groups for a day or so again? We don't watch Jimmy Kimmel and my honey was actually just flipping channels and just happened to hit Kimmel just as he was saying "...Xena season three. And from New Zealand--Lucy Lawless!" And there she was! Hoooo-hoooooo! I was online and suddenly, "Here's LUCY!" Since I hadn't heard anything about her appearance, I just ripped out a yell that she had just walked out on the Kimmel show, to let people turn on their sets or at least realize that she'd be on later. (I'm currently in the Central Time Zone. I wouldn't have bothered to do it in Alaska, since most of you all are East of me and so the show would be over.) I was PRAYING that someone would catch it on tape for the Flawless Tape Lists. You aren't the first one to wonder at what I meant. I just thank the gods I didn't blurt out, "LUCY JUST CAME OUT ON THE KIMMEL SHOW!" Imagine the number of notes I would have gotten about that one. Grin. And isn't that nice that she's got two things to work publicity for? She is SUCH a hard worker at that. She's always been willing to take the time and do the talk show "homework" for the projects she's involved in. So let's see. I'm pretty sure that first Kimmel mentioned the season three thing. Oh, and they said that she'd just had her online chat earlier that day also. They talked about XWP. Lucy mentioned that at the chat, there were people from numerous countries sending in questions. Kimmel seemed surprised about how popular Xena still is (damn whoever made that deal with Oxygen!) and how it's still running, well, worldwide. She talked again about how they blow up the faces in some I think it was middle Eastern countries in order to keep from showing the cleavage. Henry Winkler was also on the show. And Lucy said to him that they'd met but that he might not remember her. Apparently when she met him, she got all excited and blurted out something like, "Oh! You played the Fonz. He was picked by TV guide as one of the hundred most memorable characters ever on TV!" And I'm snorting and saying to my honey, "So was Xena!" And Lucy says, "And then I said to you, 'So was I!' And then I thought, he's gonna think I'm such a dork!" (Or words to that effect.) It was charming. I could not get OVER how good she looked. She's like in radiant health. For all you Lucy hair agonizers out there, let me put in my pennies and say that her hair was really nice last night. She's growing it out and it was full and well cut. The color really suits her now. (Note: But I STILL love her look as Xena with the black black hair and the gorgeous blue eyes.) She talked about the movie and said that she chose it because she felt that their earlier work, Road Trip and something else, I don't remember what it was, was good and that she knew they'd probably make a good movie. Kimmel sounded surprised that she was playing a madam in a brothel. She also said that she had wanted to bring a clip but that there was concern that it was not appropriate for the rating of his show. (Like kids are watching Jimmy Kimmel.) Obviously treading lightly in the sudden awareness that the entertainment industry makes money by selling sex and undressed girls. I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you! She also said that making the movie was a great deal of fun and that she thinks it's very good. Of course when she was doing publicity for Tarzan, she also said Fimmel was a great choice to play Tarzan. But I like that about her very much. That she boosts her fellow workers and doesn't play the blame game in public when things go badly. I think that was about it. And again, MAN is she one beautiful human being. LOL!!!! :) Like Meredith, I was also confused about the meaning - I assumed you meant she had walked off the set, like he'd pissed her off or something...man, I wish I'd watched it now, I also didn't know she was gonna be on. :( At least now I know about her being on Ryan Seacrest on Friday; I have no idea what time that airs here though, gotta find out. -Sarah- P.S. I'm surprised she didn't mention how she attended the Burbank con in disguise and all that... :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
