It was a case of loony Western cultists - - the Hare Krishnas, in this particular instance - and a power struggle in which one faction decided to demonstrate how much influence they could exert by orchestrating a campaign to destroy 'The Way'. Most of the faxes that Universal got came, apparently, from New Zealand and Eastern Europe, where the HK's are well-established - not from India. cr On Thu, 12 Feb 2004 10:51, Laconia wrote: > I remember when The Way was first aired and some Hindus got so upset about > the depiction of one of their gods in the media. I thought XWP tried to treat a variety of beliefs and organized religions respectfully. Christianity was represented in quite a few eps, and Judaism was alluded to in a few. I *believe* Khrishna was the only actual major diety figure we saw on screen. We got biblical/historical figures, like David and the archangels, or that unnamed couple at the end of "Solstice Carol," who could have been Mary and Joseph. Eli represented Jesus in many ways, but I doubt it would've gone over well in parts of the U.S. if a character named "Jesus" decided to help Xena on one of her missions. Indeed, many might've shared one of the objections of the Hindu protestors -- Xena's ... "nontraditional" ... relationship with Gabrielle. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Captioning is certainly one of them. Chicago is a big biking city with high sidewalk curbs. Many of those sidewalks are now bike (and baby stroller and shopping cart) friendly because of wheelchair slopes and ramps. My understanding is that some features on cars (like cruise control) were originally for drivers with physical disabilities. Back to captioning, I was so glad I had that when XWP was airing, as I can't tell you how many times I couldn't understand what was said. When I discovered it on the S3 DVDs, I was disappointed it wasn't on the commentaries as well. There's one exchange between Lucy and Renee, where they both fall out laughing, and I don't have a clue what they were talking about. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'd opened the set, as well as the envelope with the CD. Nevertheless, I was able to exchange the online version for the store version. I called BB customer service and said I had not received what I expected, based on BB's claim that it had exclusive material. I said the info on their online site was irrelevant, that they had advertised on the internet the "exlusive bonus content" with no suggestion whatsoever that pre-ordering would actually be a disadvantage. The customer service rep said I could take the set back to a store. I did. I showed them the difference between what I'd received and what was in the store. They said they'd send a credit notice to my card company. I then purchased the bonus version. Make sure that the front cover of the box has a violet-colored strip at the top that says "Exclusive Bonus Content -- All New Interviews With Cast and Crew." On the back cover, the first bullet under "Features" will refer to the exclusive material. The "wrong" box will simply say "Delux Collector's Edition" at the top on the front, and makes no reference on the back to "exclusive bonus content." The extra 30 minutes cover the whole third season, XWP's origins and how the "rift" came about. There are quick bits from Lucy, Renee, Sears, Hudson, and other key Xenastaff. Some comments are repeated on other commentaries. The new stuff is interesting, but probably won't be a big surprise to long-term fans. Cousin Liz warned me about pre-ordering, but it never occurred to me that BB would itself have different versions. From now on, I'm waiting until all the versions are in somebody's hot little hands, and we can compare what's what and what's not. - -- Ife PS: When I went online a few hours after returning the set, I had the following note from BB: "We have received the items you returned on 02/12/2004. Your return details are listed below. Our records indicate that this item was returned because the product did not meet expectations. Your credit card and any Digital Dollars used for this purchase have been credited. " ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Steven's commentary for "When in Rome..." was interesting, insightful AND educational! Loved that.
