Katherine Fugate, who has been approved to write the script talked a bit about it. The hold-up in getting the pre-production work started was that Universal and Rob were waiting for certain rights to lapse. I guess there was a 6-month period that needed to pass before Rob could get the rights. At any rate, Katherine said that period is over and he has lawyers working on all the necessary legal contracts and procedures that need to be done first. Lucy and Renee have been signed and Katherine has pitched a story and written an outline of that pitch. So the movie appears to be on track, but no estimation of when shooting will begin. There's still a lot of work to be done before that happens. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Wizdym4@aol.com Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2004 12:34 AM To: chakram-refugees@smoe.org Subject: [chakram-refugees] re: Suprise Announcement at Convention I'm surprised there isn't more wild, fanciful speculation here about the coming announcement. Coming as it does so soon after the revelation that Oxygen is ending its contractual hold on rights to Xena, hey, maybe there's a movie in the offing. Rob might have talked Sam Raimi, with all his Spiderman profits, into helping produce a Xena movie. Wow! Wouldn't that be something! It's not too hard to visualize this. What I perhaps liked most about Xena was that most eps seemed like mini-movies. If the producers of Xena were able to pull that off with a relatively minor budget, I swoon thinking at what they could produce with substantial financing. I look forward to the lively debates that would go on on this list as we wonder how the filming of the movie is going, etc. ..............>>>>>>>>God/dess Inspire!........>>>>>Carmon ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Does anyone know the history of who, and when they, owned Xena? From the get-go, did Tapert ever 'own' Xena? I know the MCA logo was used on early Xena merchandise, and then possibly Universal, and StudiosUSA. But that was for merchandise. And does Hercules have a similar ownership history? Does anyone really care who owns it now - meaning is anyone working hard on gaining those rights or does no one see any commercial value for them? - -- Cousin Liz eas01@fast.net Soulmates Xena Dinosaur Bards http://cousinliz.com ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Since Studios USA has been subsumed under Universal (and eventually NBC), it likely owns the television rights as well. (Maybe they will be 100% smarter and sell the TV rights out for syndication and away from Oxygen, or widen it so it is not an exclusive right.) What we were told at the convention was that there was a period in which Universal held the creative rights, which would, after a 6-month period lapse, enabling Rob to pick those rights up. That is the state of it now. He's working to get the contracts generated and signed so that he can start working on the movie. Universal wants him to have the creative rights, and thus that is why the company was willing to not exercise the rights and let them lapse in Rob's favor. At least that's how I understand what Katherine Fugate told us. Universal essentially still owns Xena and will distribute the film, but this part of it makes it possible for Rob to make the film, I presume, as the executive producer. I know this can be a real bone of contention. Gene Roddenberry got the creative rights as a 'creative consultant', if I remember correctly, from Paramount for the first Star Trek film, but had to fight for them. Creative rights as a television executive producer doesn't always carry forward as a TV series moves into film. But I could be all wrong about this last bit. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Cousin Liz Sent: Friday, February 06, 2004 6:42 AM To: chakram-refugees@smoe.org Subject: Ownership Of Xena (was: Re: [chakram-refugees] re: Suprise Announcement at Convention) bookdaft wrote: > The hold-up in getting the pre-production work started was that > Universal and Rob were waiting for certain rights to lapse.
