WOO-HOOO!!! I feel JUSTIFIED. http://dvd.ign.com/articles/476/476051p1.html?fromint=1 "Packaging and Extras "Maybe Anchor Bay followed the Microsoft path of product development: Get it right on the third try. And boy, did they get it right this time around. "Season one's extras basically amounted to an hour of commentary with various directors and a cheap "collectible" coin. Season two bulked up a bit, with commentary and separate interviews with stars Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, as well as Rob Tapert, the show's executive producer, not to mention Lucy Lawless' husband. Neither set had outtakes, blooper reels or other ancillary material from the original production. "Season three more than makes up for it with more than nine hours of new material. Each of the 22 episodes has an Interview segment with comments from writers, producers, actors and sometimes all three. Several standout programs -- including The Furies, The Debt, One Against An Army and The Bitter Suite -- also have full-blown voice-over commentary following throughout the episode, and every commentary can be heard merely as audio or viewed as a separate video itself. "The latter has more interest than you might think; for instance, Ted Raimi, who played the goofy Joxer, comes across as even more nebbishy than his character, hard as that may be to believe. Thankfully, most of the interviews in this set do away with the lurid orange backdrop used for the season two interviews and went with more normal settings. "Some of the actor commentary resembles the Lucy-Renee gigglefest from the season two set, but season three's episodes were more ambitious, so the related interviews generally have more substance without becoming weighed down in pretension (references to German philosophy and Buddhism notwithstanding). Including writers and other producers in the commentary mix this time helped provide a more rounded picture. "The eighth disc, devoted mostly to the season ender, Sacrifice, includes rough cuts of alternative scenes and a retrospective of the two-part episode featuring interviews conducted by Kym Taborn, who runs the Whoosh.org fan ubersite (Not surprisingly, one of the things explained is the origin of the Whoosh sound that became the show's signature). The documentary includes a short tribute to the late Kevin Smith, who played Ares. "Also on the last disc, a blooper reel appears for the first time in a Xena set. "Nitpickers can find things to quibble with, such as the lack of Commentary sections for The Deliverer and Gabrielle's Hope, episodes that provoked some of the most extreme fan reactions of the show's six-year run. But that's like complaining that the baked potato accompanying a perfectly-cooked steak lacks enough sour cream. There's more than enough meat in this set to please everyone who cares about the show -- they can only hope that DVD sets to come are as robust. "Score: 10 out of 10" Kymster ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. "The shift angered plenty of fans, which would have been fine had it not been so painfully contrived at times, even for Xena. But when the most lovable character on the show gave birth to the Ultimate Incarnation of Evil, it seemed to be nothing more than torture for torture's sake. Still, it's well-done for what it is." and my the reviewer certainly has a lot of sympathy for what gab must endure in season 3. yet nary a word about the death of solan. i can just hear xenahos everywhere grinding their teeth and the concurrent sound of gabfans crackling with vindicatory electricity. and after all this time, too. what a show! thanks for the link, kym. i must have missed something, tho. why do you feel particularly justified? not that you shouldn't. i frequently indulge in that feeling myself. but justified in what or by what? just curious. md - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kym Taborn" To: ; ; Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2004 4:56 PM Subject: [chakram-refugees] Xena 3rd season DVD reviews > IGN has given the set a 10 for the extras!!! I consulted on the extras and produced the Sacrifice Retrospective. I pushed hard for a lot of extras and even though I only got maybe 40% of what I thought should be in it, one cannot do better than a 10 out of 10. Woo-hoo!!! I spent a lot of hours and hard thought on this project. Pardon me while I woo-hoo again! The automatic assumption is that Lucy will show up with Renee and that would be great for those attending. But the Creation announcement said ALL OF XENA FANDOM will be surprised. So here is my wild take on this. In recent weeks we discovered that Lucy was growing her hair longer and coloring it darker because the boys, aka Rob, missed the Xena hair.....perhaps Rob got the funding and green light to do a Xena movie (TV or big screen)!!! Now that would be a welcome surprise. Any comments Sharon? Even if not, we can always hope. I must say with reality TV taking over the air waves in the US, I am dying for good old fashioned escapism like Xena. Of course the realistic side of me says NAH it will never happen because Lucy has stated in no uncertain terms she is done with the sword, so my more realistic guess is she will appear to announce the details of her deal with the WB (her own show) and just maybe Renee will be part of it?? No one can ever accuse me of not being an optimist!! Cheryl ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
