I'd never seen Lost Kingdom, which I didn't bother rectifying since it didn't have Lucy in it (stop snorting, KT). I hadn't realized ROC had such a prominent role. Not only that, she got to do about everything she did later in XWP, from hanging, drowning, fighting, being childlike one minute and a self-possessed young woman the next, and even getting transported toward the heavens (sort of). It was especially fun to see all the precursors of XWP, from Bob Trebor and other supporting cast, to the stock footage of the leaf that drips dew and the full moon, to the exact same barroom couple that appears in Chariots. But what really caught my attention was a bit of music that was sort of like Dianeara's theme, which first plays when she tells Herc her father is a king. Ironically, it's the same unforgettable music that's in AFIN, in the scene where Xena's kneeling alone before Gabs comes in. There's even the same haunting voice singing in the background when Daineara's with her dying father. "Destiny" is mentioned throughout Lost Kingdom, in reference to Daineara. Well, between Lost Kingdom and AFIN, ROC sure came full circle. There were snatches of a lot of familiar music in AFIN. I wonder if LoDuca was even aware of the musical connection between ROC's first appearance in Herc and last in XWP, as well as Xena's flesh-and-blood "farewell" to Gabrielle. Admittedly, kinda gave me goosebumps. Of course I had to watch Amazon women again. You hair aficionados might be interested to know that it seems Lucy's got her real hair color in that one, which is close to the darker version of what we've been seeing lately. Gods, she looks so young. I think she was much better suited to the captain role, with Roma Downey as an appropriate queen. Lucy showed spark back then, but I can see how much she matured during her first season of XWP, whereas in Lost Kingdom ROC already seemed to demonstrate a lot of the range she'd deepen in XWP. Anyway, fascinating to see some of that in retrospect, especially the way those Herc eps underscores the "rightness" of LL and ROC starring in XWP. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
