Ya got Fallen Angel and Chakram, which most folks seemed to like. God Fearing Child, Amphipolis, Cleo, Looking Death, Livia, Eve, and Motherhood also got pretty good reviews. Some which I liked (but didn't go over well with many folks) for the pure fun were Animal Attraction, Lyre, Punch Lines, Kindred Spirits (at least I think that's the one where X&G play house), and (after great initial reluctance) even Fishsticks. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. My trouble with S5 is that I wouldn't mind a montage of some enjoyable moments - where any of the cast were either excellent or fetching. In fact there is a music video to Ricky Martin's She Bangs which liberally uses the dancing amazons in ... uh... Kindred Spirits? However, I most enjoyed XWP where I could not tear my eyes away from the screen for a 42 minute episode! Usually because of the train-wreck unfolding before my eyes. So your point that it was the combination of LL, RT and RJ all firing toegther that made the best eps - and their "absence" from S5 - well you may just have something there. I remember the fall-out on the lists when Callisto got good in FA - watching it again I thought she was great and Gabby's trial in the middle was very good - but as we all asked at the time - where was her sister in heaven? Maybe there was more than one bad seed in the Callisto family? Liz ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. And I really liked Sarge. Especially her very overt sexuality. I remember one ep where she programmed Mauser for sex. Very funny. Cleopatra herself was trying for me, kind of whiny, ya know? I think the show was innovative and visually stunning. (A Tapert hallmark.) I really enjoyed the emphasis on female warriors, their honor, courage and integrity. And their camaradarie. I watched a fair amount of eps. The problem with them for me was that they were only one-half hour each. And when you had fights/action scenes/special effects filling up 1/3 or more of a 22 or so minute show, there wasn't a lot of time left for story or character development. Given that, the amazing thing is how well they did with this "handicap". Torres' character really had a back story and we ultimately realized she was a tragic hero in many ways. One thing I enjoyed was how they had "threads" that would get carried on in the next ep or in one down the road aways. The thread about Hel and her father were very good. (Yeah, it was Hel--the computer voice was "Voice" yes?) Yes, I COULD look it up--but that's cheating. I liked Cleo better than I liked Jack of all trades. I really like Bruce Campbell, but that show just way too quickly got too much like F troop for me. Blech. I thought Brisco was a much better Campbell vehicle. How does one handle a serious disagreement with a friend? In Orphan, Gabrielle seriously disagrees with Xena about Solan. I believe at first she sees this as Xena abandoning her son only when she comes to understand Xena's reasons for her actions does support Xena. Now she still believes Xena is wrong but she is willing no to suppot her decision without judging her. I think this has to do with looking at the issue from Xena's point of view. She understands Xena's point of view even if she doesn't agree with it. So it is with any friendship. You can disagree with a friend and have it not affect your friendship if you respect their point of view. If you believe they are acting in a way you don't agree with but you believe that they have made the decision with the best intentions possible you can support them. There are however limits to that. If your friend does something that you find so offensive or morally repugnant that it shatters your faith in them then the friendship will most probably end. For example if a person commits a crime you probably could support them by staying friends with them if you understood their motives - let's say they stole money but you knew they were desperate for money - you could understand their motives. This doesn't mean you will become their accomplice or cover up for them but it does mean you would help to make them make amends. However if your friend expected you to violate you're own moral code to cover for them or lie for them you would be compelled to end the friendship because they did not respect your own feelings or beliefs. Now in Xena, since this is the Xena list, Xena and Gabrielle often disagreed but usually they understood each others points of view. Now this of course wasn't always the case. In the rift arc what happened of course was neither Xena nor Gabrielle could or even attempted to understand the other's view point. In "Gabrielle's Hope" Xena could not comprehend Gabrielle's attachment to Hope. She never listened to Gabrielle's arguments about her daughter. If Xena would have listened to Gabrielle she would have realized that her friend loved her daughter and she would have to approach the problem of Hope in another way. Instead she brushed off Gabrielle's concerns and barreled ahead in her plans to kill Hope forcing Gabrielle to lie to protect her daughter. In "The Debt" Gabrielle was the one who wasn't listening. When Xena tells her the story of Lao Mao Gabrielle doesn't realize the significance of what she is hearing. Instead she focuses on her moral outrage that Xena was contempalting murder and her own feelings of jealously. If she would have understood what Xena was saying about her debt to Lao Mao she would have realized Xena was acting not only out of love for her menotor but also guilt for disappointing Lao Mao. If Gabrielle understood Xena's motivations she could have supported a plan to get rid of the Green Dragon but perhaps have shown Xena that murder wasn't the way to do it. In both these cases if the friends had only understood the other's point of views they could have modified their actions. They might have pursuaded the other that their course of action was wrong and still maintained a friendship. CherylA - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 15:54:01 -0800 From: "Creation (Sharon Delaney)" Subject: [chakram-refugees] moral dilemma of Orphan .... Gabrielle gets quite harsh with Xena as they argue over how a mother could ever give up a child. This seemed to place their friendship on some pretty shaky ground. Later on Gabby apologizes for her questioning Xena's actions, she states that she isn't saying she agrees with her decision, but will always be there for her. Gabrielle realizes that she should have been less judgmental and more of a friend, which is what Xena needed. Gabrielle is slowly learning how to be a friend to Xena while keeping her moral code. There's a larger view here about how to be a friend to someone you disagree with? And where do you draw the line and realize you can no longer be their friend? ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. She just never seemed to get comfortable with her character, except in the last ep, and by then it was too late. It's hard to say how much "matching" LL had to do for the other actress' scenes. I would suspect a lot of it would be purely physical, rather than emotional, but of course I'm just guessing. If it were just physical, though, that certainly didn't prevent LL from _making a choice_ about her character's motivation and just *going for it*. ;P Although LL wasn't the star in this show, I doubt if she made a suggestion to the director, that her advice wouldn't be listened to. A big enough deal was made of her hire, that I think she had enough "star power" to give feedback. I really did like Sam, but I also thought everyone else was showing more "comfort" with their character than LL did. ;P I wish I felt differently. ;( Just MO, - --Jackie P.S. As much as *I* wanted to be the one to bring this truly CLASSIC book series to life, I was VERY excited to read this the other day: NARINIA STORY TO BECOME A FILM "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," the beloved fantasy novel by C.S. Lewis, will be made into a film in New Zealand, a newpaper reported Friday. New Zealander Andrew Adamson, best known for the Oscar winning animated feature "Shrek" will direct the film and Walden Media will produce it. "We are extremely happy and excited to be starting work on the film in New Zealand," Wellington's "Dominion Post" newspaper quoted Adamson as saying. The movie is expected to be the first of five films based on Lewis' seven "Chronicles of Narnia" books, to which Walden holds the film rights. The $110 million US film will start production preparations early in 2004, although work on the "Chronicles" has already started at Jackson' Weta Workshop in Wellington. Shooting, much of it in South Island forests, high country and coastal areas will begin mid-2004. "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," published in 1950, is the second of the best-known novel in the seven-part Narnia series. It also includes "The Magician's Nephew," "The Horse and His Boy," "Prince Caspian," "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," "The Silver Chair" and "The Last Battle." SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
