Here you go! Renee OConnor: Warrior/Producer November 11, 2003 by Lynn Barker With the release of the Xena: Season II DVD set, we wanted to catch up with Xenas galpal the spunky, loyal Gabrielle. Houston-born actress Renee OConnor moved to L.A. from New Zealand after the series wrapped and has been busy being mom to 2-year-old Miles and wife to her New Zealand guy Steve Muir. Now, shes back in show-biz with plans to act, produce and direct. When we caught up with the friendly, strawberry blonde actress, she gave us the low-down on getting slimed by an eel, wearing a Porky Pig costume, chatting often with pal Lucy Lawless since the wrap-up of the series, her fave costume from the Xena closets and her favorite Season II episodes. TeenHollywood: Are you living in L.A. now? Renee: Yes. I came back here to start a family. I was pregnant when I finished Xena and moved back here to be closer to my family to have my son Miles. Hes two. TeenHollywood: What was the toughest thing about doing the Xena series and what do you miss the most? Renee: What I miss the most is probably working with my friends. We were practically in this little marriage of a situation where we saw each other every day and went through the best and worst times together. To be away from Lucy has been a huge transformation for me in the last couple of years and also to have my alter-ego disappear. The most challenging aspect of working in New Zealand were the environmental elements. And the daily schedule we had to face working five or six days a week. Usually when they had us in the rain it would be right in the dead of winter. TeenHollywood: Have you gotten together with Lucy recently? Renee: Actually Im going to be talking to her today. I talk to her at least once a month and see her as well. TeenHollywood: Do you talk about mom stuff now? Renee: We go through transitions. At first we did while I was pregnant and having my little boy but now were mostly talking about work again. Shes writing quite a bit and Im going into the producing field. Its been interesting talking about different situations and of course our personal lives as well as gossiping. TeenHollywood: Are you into directing too? Renee: Actually I want to do it all. Act, produce and direct, not necessarily in the same film but what Im trying to do now is choose the projects that I would be best at, to play the lead or direct someone else. It really comes down to project to project and what I feel most passionate about and whats the best way for me to tell the story. TeenHollywood: Why is A Day in the Life from season 2 one of your favorite episodes? Renee: For one reason it was New Zealand director Michael Hearsts first episode so we were all trying to jump behind him and help him. Then the camaraderie between Lucy and I really came to a perfect sense of timing. We really had fun together. It was a different way to view the characters; a behind-the-scenes of the way these people really are as opposed to the Batman and Robin relationship you usually see on screen. That was a real kick for us to let loose and play. TeenHollywood: Do you recall a funny Xena moment you can tell us about? Renee: I had a horrible experience on A Day in the Life with them throwing fish at me. If I wasnt smelling like a fish they were having me cut up an eel or something disgusting. Then you have to sit and bake in the sun after you have fish scales on you. You become a horrible sight. Its funny because Lucy was playing with the eels trying to catch them but I was fascinated by the fact that if you touch them they become quite slimy, a horrendous creature that you cannot possibly catch and it looks like a snake. At the end they had to put an eel in my sleeping bag. Everybody was freaked out by the whole thing. I knew this thing wasnt going to bite me but when they get nervous they become slimy and he was trying to find his way out. Thats the absurdity of Xena; you get to do things you can never imagine you would. TeenHollywood: Describe the process of doing commentary for the DVD after so long away from the show. Renee: We had a question and answer session first that was just general ideas of characters and things that we went through while filming then we sat down and watched a couple of the episodes I hadnt seen in a long time. When we would finish each episode, we would get a copy of it and I would take it home and watch it and put it in a little file box and I wouldnt watch it again. I didnt have time. Id forget what happened. TeenHollywood: What had you forgotten that surprised you? Renee: I had forgotten how dark Return of Callisto was. I always encouraged Rob [Tapert] to push the envelope and go for it. When the decision came about on whether Xena should let Callisto die or not, I was all for it. I love to look at both sides of human nature; the dark and the light and, to me, that was the most interesting. That was such a bold choice. TeenHollywood: What was your favorite costume that you got to wear in the series? Renee: The one [from the episode] that was like Pygmalion where they try to make Gabrielle a lady. It was outrageous. It was very bosomy. They gave me ample supplies of push-up bras. It was fun to get out of my peasant dress and get into something more glamorous. TeenHollywood: As a kid you wore character costumes at a theme park. Any stories? Renee: I was playing Porky Pig once and the head broke and started spinning around like The Exorcist and all the children just went silent. Another time I was playing Foghorn Leghorn, a six foot chicken twice my size and the head falls off! I was a headless, dancing chicken running around but it was a ball. It was a great way to express myself and learn the physicality of acting. TeenHollywood: Did you have to work to lose your Texas accent? Renee: I had one then I went to a performing arts high school and they had a speech and diction class and they changed our vowels and took away the Southern accent. TeenHollywood: Gabrielle was a storyteller. Are you writing anything.. scripts? Renee: Its funny because I find that writing is the most difficult thing for me. Im such a visual person that I prefer to draw and paint before Ill sit down and write but Im forcing myself to change that and keep a diary. Now I can see what stories I do want to tell. TeenHollywood: You are good at several sports. What is your favorite? Renee: Im kick boxing now. I just started working out with a trainer once a week. I was so inspired by that that I started picking up my nunchakus again. Its such a brutal weapon. On Xena, after Gabrielle has lost her staff, we were looking for a weapon for her to have but that was too violent. TeenHollywood: Whats next for you? Renee: I just finished producing a digital film called Diamonds and Guns with my producing partners and Im acting in it. Im sort of a supporting character because I wanted to focus more on the producing and then were working on another one and Im either going to act or direct. Im not sure yet. Probably act in it. Working with digital media gives you the freedom to produce and not after to wait for a certain amount of financing. TeenHollywood: Any final message to Xena fans? Renee: I think its fantastic to look back on these characters and know how empowered other women have been by watching them. I felt that way doing the character. Enjoy the DVD. *** Lynn Barker is a Hollywood-based entertainment journalist and produced screenwriter. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! Travis Fimmel gets raked over the coals for simply pouting (untrue - he snarls too). Jane fares no better - I believe he calls her boring. In fact he calls the whole show boring. Mercifully Lucy and Mitch are not mentioned at all (probably with so little screen time in the episodes reviewed, the reviewer probably missed Lucy when he blinked). What I am wondering is if this review was written for previous eps, where I would agree,,,,,pretty boring. Does anyone know if the show is definitely cancelled or are they waiting to see the final ratings over the remaining filmed episodes? I really think the premise was interesting, and the whole thing was beginning to pull you in CJ ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. It seems from the articles that were posted that, they "suspended production". I believe this would mean that the actors are still under contract, and the production COULD be resumed. They will still be airing the episodes that are "in the can" during sweeps. Now this brings to my mind a course of action. If each of us and one hundred and fifty of our closest Xenite friends were to break into the homes of people with Neilson boxes and force them to watch the show, the resulting boost in ratings would probably rate a commitment to produce the rest of the season. Baring drastic action of this sort, it's a goner. A shame too, it was finally getting decent, I'm actually looking forward to the remaining episodes. Like Lee the show is getting much better and faxes & letters did get us a full season 6 of Xena? I saw a website... I think http://savetarzan.withtheprettiness.net and it had all the contacts to try and save the series..... so if we want more Lucy (I thought she was very good last week) lwt's start writing!! ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. She's baaack! For those of you suffering from "Xena" withdrawal -- and we know you're out there -- help is here. In addition to catching Lucy Lawless every week on the new WB series "Tarzan," you can see her in the second season of cult fave "Xena: Warrior Princess" -- now out on DVD. Diehard fans may recall that things really heated up between Xena and her trusted companion Gabrielle in season two. Now viewers can enjoy (or enjoy again) the over-the-top dyke innuendo in "A Comedy of Eros" or the not-so-subtle subtext of the two gals bathing together in the classic episode, "A Day in the Life." It's a 20-hour lesbian dream come true. Lucy recently talked to PlanetOut about her lesbian crush on a certain young movie starlet, her love of Cosmos and appearing nude on-screen. When did you first become aware of gay issues? I think as a kid. My parents are very Catholic, and my mother had a friend who used to come to our house who was a gay man. I knew that technically it wasn't supposed to be OK, and yet my very Catholic parents were fine with it, or at least were supportive of him as an individual. So I think that was my first awareness. If you were going to be gay/lesbian for just one weekend, who would you want to go out on a date with? If I was gay I'd want to go out with Mary Ann from "Gilligan's Island." Cause I reckon Mary Ann was secretly a very bad girl. What's your current favorite CD, book, writer, movie? My current favorite actress is Scarlett Johansson from "Lost in Translation." I thought she was, you know, the new Renie Zellweger. Not that we're done with Renie Zellweger yet, but I just thought this girl was just phenomenally gorgeous and relatable and understated and divine. Do you have a favorite drink? What ... yeah, I still like a Cosmo -- as served by the guys at the Trump International in New York. Those are the best I've ever had. Does your favorite drink reflect your personality? Ahh. Sweet and tangy ... lethal. Yeah, that's me. Who's your favorite Village Person? Angel? Brady? Backstreet Boy? Cowboy. Cowboys are my weakness. That would be my favorite book, "Cowboys Are My Weakness," by Pam Houston. Lyle Lovett is my favorite guy. BoDeans are my favorite band. Fill in the blank: I always have _____ in my refrigerator. Hard lemonade Who inspires you the most? Bill Murray. Aretha Franklin. Nina Simone. E. Annie Proulx, the writer. And James Baldwin -- he's phenomenal. Tell us something nobody knows about you. I'm a redhead. Nobody knows that ... except my colorist. Who was your first celebrity crush? My first celebrity crush was on Choo Choo the pink cat in Topcat. I just had this incredible ... you know, funnily enough, now this is an interesting thing about me, he sounded kind of gay. Then the Bee Gee that I really liked was Robin, who seemed kind of gay. So what is it about me and gays? Truly four out of five of my friends in L.A. are gay. Why do I pursue them? What pushes your buttons/makes you angry? Oh, just about anything. I can get angry quite easily, but it's over in a heartbeat. Squelch a rumor about yourself. I already have. Fill in the blank: The last movie I cried at was ______. "Lost in Translation." "Whale Rider," that made me cry and laugh out loud, partly because I really related to the young people that were out the back laughing and getting together. I just know those kids, you know. ... I grew up with them. Describe your ideal mate. The one I've got -- he's smart, has many passionate interests and finds me fascinating. What's your biggest guilty pleasure? Oh, I love Court TV. I love "Medical Detectives" on Discovery, and that's why I don't know any of my competition on TV because of all that bull I like to watch. Would you appear nude in a movie? The right role, and the right context, yes. Who is your favorite designer? Karen Walker, Helen Cherry and Ben Beasley, who are Down Under labels. Up here I like a lot of people, but I really support Down Under talent cause I just think it's edgier than a lot of the things that I see around London or ... maybe not London, but anyway I'm excited by what they do. Fill in the blank: In high school, I was _________________ In high school I was awkward, gosh, and (these aren't my words) rebellious. What's your favorite getaway? My favorite getaway? Oh, I just like to get away to Court TV. I hate beaches. I hate all that relaxation. - -------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
