Missy Good noted at Dragoncon this past Labor Day weekend that the TV rights to Xena come up in either 2004 or 2005 and will likely be considered a hot property. Even if this is not true, a recent report on some news program, which I don't recall the name of now, spoke with a studio exec and he said that most films are permitted to go ahead with an eye on DVD sales. So if the movie doesn't do well in the theaters, they will be sure to market it for DVDs. Thus these people are ensuring lots of outtakes and interviews and "The Making Of..." kinds of documentaries as extras with the film because they are sure they can recoup the costs through DVD sales. bd ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Fewer than 10 entries appear this week, because fewer than 10 SF&F programs aired during the week on broadcast networks. That's a good indication that it started well, but I don't know any more than that. As with most shows, it's probably declined since then. Nor have I heard whether the back 9 shows have been picked up. bd ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. He's so cool. I love him. He's very naughty." This underlying affection makes it easier for Lawless to find the soft heart at the core of Richard and Kathleen's fierce sibling rivalry. "There is a love relationship there. You've always got to keep looking for the love, what brings these people back together, what's at stake. "If there's nothing to lose with them fighting, if they just have an all-out battle, there would be no tension there. It would let all the pressure out, and of course, you've got to keep the pressure-cooker lid down nice and tight. It compels the audience to react." >> This is in line with impressions I've gotten of Lucy trying to "humanize" the series, by reminding viewers that this is not just a tale of cold business rivalries, but of a family that may be torn apart by different goals and perspectives. It's going to be difficult trying to accomplish that in her brief appearances, but I certainly see glimmers of it in what she's done so far. With Richard, she's tried to find common ground, along with being cautious and concerned about what he's doing. With John, she's reluctant to bad mouth Richard, even though it's clear she preferred her other brother. In both cases, her lines could be said with more susipicion, bitterness or manipulativeness, but I see her trying to project more warmth and genuine caring. Anyway, her experiences with XWP showed her the importance of "finding the heart." I hope she can convey some of that for Tarzan, as it just might help the show rise above pretty pictures and pitiful plots. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. A few comments, but first a message from S p o i l e r S p a c e I n c . Providing you with spoiler space for over 7 years. The actors seem to be finding their stride, including our Dear Lucy. At least IMHO there seems to be less of the "feeling their way" of the earlier episodes. The kid sister finally got something to do apart from "domestic tranquility scenes". Methinks she may be the one to "civilize" or more properly acculturate John. Although her taste in music leaves much to be desired. :) But I'm somewhat concerned that they are pushing the main plot line a little fast. This may leave them stuck with nothing but soap-operasque overly convoluted 'twists', to keep John out of jail (or being shot on sight), Jane and John apart, and Greystoke 50/50. Of course that IS inevitable, but it seems to be coming a bit fast. I won't mention the inordinate amount of disbelief that is being suspended. Being on the right bridge at the right time, and getting there faster than a vehicle travelling in excess of 70 mph. Perhaps I nitpick a bit much. However it seems to be turning into a good yarn, and the Sunday 9:00 slot should help it. It's better than "Tru Calling" by a long sight. (Which BTW had a very interesting premise, hopefully they will do a better job of exploring it in future episodes). How much of Tru running can one watch? My real problem with this episode was the shower scene. Jane's reaction just didn't fit. She's a hardened NYC cop, a naked body should not make her act like a 13 year old. Unless it was THAT good! :) I know they were going for a 'forbidden fruit' Garden of Eden thing, but it just didn't play very well, or maybe was inexpertly directed. Instead of sexy/romantic it just came off as awkward, and somewhat funny. Who's for buying John a cd player?
