I wasn't that keen on the story itself, but for some reason I did find myself a tad more interested in watching Janey and Johnnie. Lucy definitely conveyed an openness and fondness with John, that they are each other's only *real* family left (that they care about). Two loners in a funny way, with each being the only meaningful link to an important person (John's father) who represents good memories in their pasts. On the other hand, I've seen guardedness, protectiveness, scrutiny when it comes to auntie's trust of others. She doesn't convey dislike of Jane, so much as "John likes her, I'll give her some space, but I also have concerns about how this relationship will affect John." Sort of like Xena's initial "I'll be watching her development" in reference to baby Hope. Funny, Lucy physically reminded me of a panther in Xena. With her new look and stance toward everyone but John, she reminds me of a lioness watching over her cub. Maybe it's the dark vs. lighter eyebrows. > > Perhaps it has turned the corner and can develop into a decent series. >> I certainly hope so, since I'm fated to watch it as if it were. > > BTW I watched the rerun at 5 p.m. and IMO Lucy's run up the stairs was > perfectly natural to me. It's nuts to get stuck on this, but my own comment was more about intentionality. Lucy seems to have a pretty good feel for how she wants to interact with the main characters. With John, she's loose, adopts very relaxed postures, smiles a lot, is very inviting and even vulnerable. With uncle and Jane, she's tough, has more of an "edge," lots of head cocks and peering up in a calculated way. But when she's doing "filler" things -- like looking over reports with her employees or talking to the maid -- it just seems more "studied" to me, less like she's in Kathleen's skin in the little ways she came to bewith Xena. I'm not criticizing that or saying it doesn't look "natural" in general. Indeed, it may be that she consciously chose for Kathleen to appear spontaneous - -- "unself-conscious" -- in her own home, as opposed to someone whose business persona *is* who they are, even "informally." Now that I've seen more of the domestic scenes with John, I'm thinking that's where Lucy's going, so the stair thing "fits" more to me. While I do have some preconceived ideas about characters, I tend to go with what the actor gives me, especially with one who makes "in the moment," sometimes unusual decisions that surprise me or make me take notice in a different way. Overall, I like what Lucy's done early on in the typically 5-6 minutes she's gotten so far. As I said in an earlier post, I think she's taking the risk of building layers into her performance, despite her last-minute insertion, the brief moments she has to work with, and some pretty insipid lines. At this point, for me anyway, it's more like, "Hmmm, wonder where she's going with that," rather than, "That didn't seem 'right'" or (a la Jackie), "She seem's 'lost." I figure she knows what she's doing. Not sure that makes sense, but it's the best I can do on this grand topic. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I tendto agree with you about FA. Besides, they were (as you said) noticeably disoriented. But in WFC, I prefer to see it my way ;) Besides, having lived through FA, and the 25-year sleep in LDITE, and even Nigel's strange recording devices in YAT, they should be getting used to that sort of thing by now ;) In fact, (and I'm sure someone's probably covered this point but maybe I missed it), since Gabs zapped the 'alternate reality', why would the here-and-now X&G know anything about it? OK, from the dialogue, evidently they did (YAXI, IMO) but my guess is they shrugged it off as a "*that* was weird" kind of experience. I guess we'll just have to keep our respective viewpoints. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'd seen some press items suggesting Lucy replaced someone and some suggesting the character hadn't existed before. This is the first I've heard that they'd simply reshot previously existing scenes. Still, I'm impressed with the small ways Lucy's giving Kathleen "personality." - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
