XWP was a one-of-a-kind character, never to come around again. But since they're pitting LL against Mitch Pilaggi (sp?), it'll be a contest of wills (pun intended ;) ), so the set-up is already there for a showdown. LL's character is _supposed_ to be strong, a fighter. But I unfortunately didn't see any of that fire in her character last Sun. ;( And, surprisingly, I found Mitch's character more interesting than LL's. ;P > But she started XWP very restrained, very dour. (Same with the X-Files >character.) - --Stoic is one thing. Lifeless is another. ;P And I was deliberately _not_ bringing up the X-F character because I wanted to review Tarzan on its own terms. But since you mentioned it.....;) I was more riveted by the X-F character than I was by Kathleen Clayton. The X-F person had more mystery, more spunk, more in-your-face danger than Kathleen will ever have. And Kathleen's supposed to be this manipulative magnate.......;P That's just so much *fodder* for cheap Hollywood writers, so it should've been *easy* for her to play that angle up, but she didn't. ;P I.e., that brief scene on Jane's puter where Kathleen waves off the TV cameras seemed so fake to me. LL could've made it more engaging or provacative, but she didn't. Dunno why, because I know what that woman's capable of, and it's a lot more than what I saw, which was nothing. ;=/ >I recall our recent discussion when she suddenly let go in >"Doctor" -- a surprise that some of us liked and some of us >didn't. - --*Ahem*! ;P "Letting go" is different from "being real" or "being interesting". Letting go can be *too much*. But being real or being interesting is engaging the audience in the "suspension of disbelief" journey. > I think Lucy'll show more "spark" as she becomes more comfortable with >the character, though I still doubt it'll captivate us in the same way as >with Xena. - --Well, I hope so, because her character is supposed to be the counterpoint to Richard. Without it, the story will have even less depth than it does now. ;P I'm just disappointed she didn't have a better handle on her character from the start. She's a much more seasoned actress now than she was when she began on XWP, so there's no reason why she couldn't've given us a more decisive motivation for her character (and less *mush*) than she did coming out of the box. I can only hope LL will get better over time. ;( Just MO, - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ... But Lucy fans have started a letter writing campaign to get it on their schedule. They are writing through both e-mail and regular mail since the industry still pays more attention to regular mail. Their first generic reply to our e-mails said essentially that the Discovery schedule in America was already locked in for the 2003 season. I then sent a second e-mail to suggest they consider putting it into the 2004 season. This is the reply I got: Thank you for contacting Discovery Channel. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us. We forwarded your suggestion to our program development office for their review. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of suggestions we receive, our programming management and executives are not able to respond and follow up directly with everyone. But please be assured that our viewer suggestions are very important to us and are taken into consideration when making programming decisions. Viewer opinions and suggestions tell us what we can improve on and what our audience enjoys. It is these types of observations that create change and improve programming. In the meantime, we hope you continue to watch and enjoy our programs. For more information about our schedules and programming, check out our website at www.discovery.com. Again, thank you for taking the time to write. ________________ Sharon Delaney just posted on her Xena Page on the Creation site that Warrior Women's debut drew twice as many viewers as they normally get in that time slot. This info will be in my next note to them which will be a regular written one. Their address was posted on another list: Discovery Communications Inc. One Discovery Place Silver Spring, MD 20910 And if you feel truly outraged by this lack of Lucy in America, their telephone number is 240-662-2000. WB did give LL quite a bit of hype, after > all....;=/ > No I don't think that's the case at all. She is now playing a very different character than Xena. She is not a Greek warrior but a wealthy publisher and I assume will eventually become more of a maternal figure in the show. It is also not her show. She is essentially a supporting character and is there to support the stars of the show. I think she needs to underplay the role a bit to build up the character a bit - the character has to have a bit of mystery - is she as good as she seems or is she playing a game too? The character itself needs a lot of development and Lucy has to leave room for what the character will developed into. Anyway I think that anyone who expects Tarzan to develop into the Lucy Lawless show is going to be mightily disappointed. That's not going to happen and it is certainly not what Lucy apparently wants - she has said she likes this role because she works only three days on an episode. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
