Once again, I believe you've hit on a critical point. When Xena said "die like a warrior," I focused on her dying fighting. I didn't consider that there was little honor in what she was doing or that she was fighting more like someone who has taken the easiest way out -- resorting to brutality with little regard for the true consequences. Xena often reacted tactically -- one battle at a time -- but usually in a way that preserved the strategic possibility for winning the war. This time it was more about killing than surviving or winning. Xena was so much more than the average warrior. You've given me yet another reaon for why Gabrielle's intervention wasn't just about Xena doing something Gabrielle's way. It allowed Xena to fight as a true warrior in combat with honor for both sides and the possibility that the fight would have potential beyond which side killed off the most enemy. If she was killed by the Horde leader or his followers, she at least would've died as Gabrielle knew would befit the kind of warrior Reformed Xena had become and wanted to be. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. (i.e. PacRen's main studios in Auckland). The 'Hollywood' sign on the hills in the background was evidently CGI'd in. I've also noticed that, in the early Season 1 Herc eps, a remarkably high proportion of footage was shot at Mount Mangere. Not that it's relevant to much, except that I find Mangere a fascinating location. All of a quarter mile across, yet they never exhausted the possibilities, there were still several parts of it and many angles they never used. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I think that is the function of Gabrielle. She often articulates the subtext of the episode in terms of what the emotional component of the conflict is. In this instance we have scary people but Xena has faced scary people before. What Gabrielle can do is make is make the audience see that Xena isn't just scared of the Horde because they are nasty but because she has frame of reference for them. They don't appear to want any thing yet they are implacable enemies. Gabrielle questions Xena every step of the way until both the audience and Xena understand what Xena actually fears. "While I also appreciate it, I don't always see the possibilities (or connection to Xena's quest) until you "spark" an "aha" moment for me. That line about Xena's fear of the unknown is a good example. I didn't see it that way, because I was so focused on the external threat. Gabs, of course, saw the internal threat. It's that internal "landscape" that you explore in a way that makes me say you have more of a Gabs perspective. Not sure if that makes sense. We have so many Xena folks on Chakram (at least who post a lot), that I always like how you bring a different dimension." Now I am a Xena fan but I think Gabrielle is a vital part of Xena's saga. It is Gabrielle that causes Xena to re-examine her motivations and her assumptions. She give Xena another point of view to consider and often a reason to change tactics. Without Gabrielle we would simply have a hero in a white hat that always knows what the right answer is. With Gabrielle we have a dialog where solutions to problems are worked out and the audience is invited in to watch the process. We have been discussing The Debt which is an interesting case in point. Xena can only see one solution to Ming Tien and that is murder. Gabrielle objects and says murder is not the solution. Xena therefore leaves Gabrielle behind to follow her own path. Gabrielle then is left alone to follow her path. The two paths collide and there is a disaster. However if Xena and Gabrielle had stayed together and had their customary dialog it is possible they could have come up with a plan that would have accomplished the removal of Ming without all the trauma to them. It is of course the recurring theme of Xena that there is a yin and yang to life. Xena and Gabrielle represent this and when they are out of balance there is a disaster when they are in balance there is success. Can you provide a view of Sunday night, in particular TARZAN. With Lucy Lawless added to the cast at the last minute...do you view this as a positive for the show, can the show stand on it's own with a new twist on an old theme, etc..?? Quite frankly I think Lucy's talents are often underplayed and I do not know if this vehicle (given it is a supporting role) will add value to the show if it is not capable in it's own right. Your point of view?? Thanks, Cheryl ************************************************* From: McFarland, Melanie Subject: RE: Fall Line Up Hi Cheryl, Thanks for your e-mail. I'm tackling fall TV on a day to day basis, so my capsule of Sunday's shows are running Saturday. But here's a preview: "Tarzan's" pilot is awful, and although I haven't seen an episode with Lucy Lawless, I don't have high hopes. But she's no dummy. She's worked a deal to develop a show for The WB to air next season. So I think you're about to see a whole lot more of her, which makes sense because isn't her second kid preschool age now? Hope this gives you a little insight! And thanks again for reading me.
