After waiting somewhat [im]patiently for the DVDs and reading some of the comments I had to watch this one first. I too was amazed that neither one of them remembered the wedding kiss. At the end of LL's comments it sounded like she said Xena was recruiting! One scene that I thought was very poweful and had always moved me was Xena's moonlight prayer. I had really thought one or both of them would have made some comments about that scene, but it passed with no reaction from either one of them. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Subject: [chakram-refugees] Orphan of War This was one of my favorite eps of that season, primarily for the way LL played the her scenes with Solan. After she gave infant Solan to Kaleipus she walked away with a walk and facial expression that I can only describe as shell-shocked. I thought these perfectly portrayed the feeling of her sorrow/regret/determination... whatever you think fits here. Her scene taking care of Solan's broke arm in the caverns seemed to show a motherly concern and worry in a subtle but not-so-subtle-to-the- viewer kinda way as she was splinting his arm and then hugged him. In the ending scene, she delivered [IMHO] a very powerful and moving dialogue with Solan that gave the impression she was on the verge of telling Solan that she was his mother and was only just barely able to keep it back. I'm one who also enjoys [on a non-technical level] the impact of lighting on a scene. The light that highlighted the side of her face as she spoke with Solan just seemed to emphasize the strength of the emotions Xena was feeling as she spoke to her son. Thanks for fellow Xenites and the word of mouth.... ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Perhaps they never did see the whole episode at least I don't think Lucy ever did. Rob said she never liked watching the completed episodes probabaly because like a lot of actors she was too self-critical. I however do enjoy listening to all the technical stuff. I was absolutely astonished to hear that no one ever took to the high seas in Destiny and that the boat latter doubled as the fort in The Price. I love that kind of stuff. By the way did you see the blurb about Hercules Season 2. Rob will be gossiping about Sorbo and the USA execs. Looks like they are trying to drum Hercules business. I wonder how the sets are faring vis a vis one and other. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. She almost had me convinced this was a half way good episode and then I watched it again. You know there are good things here - great music, nice fights, Gabrielle dancing and barfing across the ocean, and Rob's Folly. However you can't get past the dismal casting of John D'Aquino as Ulysses and it's a shame. Ulysses would have been such a great character to have on the show - a great warrior and a clever trickster. Cast correctly and if the script had been just bit more witty we could have had a great episode but it didn't happen. Lucy tries her best here but there is absolutly no chemeistry between her and D'Aquino and the love story just didn't come off. D'Aquino just tried too hard to be charming and it didn't help that he came off as slightly dumb. Rachel Blakely is wasted as Penelope. She is a good actress and plays in the syndicated show Lost World where she plays roguish woman adventurer. She was also onced rumored to have been up for the part of Eve. There have been some who said this show got a bad rap because it interferred with the subtext. I don't know if that's fair to the subtexters. I did like that little part where Gabby seems concerned that Xena is about to run off with Ulysses. I can however interupt that as any body's concern when a guy enters your best friend's life - you never know if you are about to be left in the dust. However I do notice that even Shippers never wrote any Xena and Ulysses stories . Even Rafe popped up in a few stroes but not Uly. Not much of a review here - sorry. They'd already thrown Draco, Marcus, Ares, etc... at Xena. When I 1st watched the episode I figured no one could be that bad of an actor. Maybe it was simply the dialogue or... or maybe heat stroke! But then I saw D'Aquino in some other show and realized that wasn't the case. He was as bad there as he had been in Xena. Totally unwatchable. And he's in too many scenes to fast-forward thru and make it worth your while. > Not much of a review here - sorry.
