Again I have to say I have always seen Xena as a very > emotional character. Although she hides behind the warrior mask I really > believe Xena wears her heart on her sleeve more than another character in > the series. Oh absolutely. And this is another thing that some fanfic gets totally wrong. They portray Xena as a totally stoic, totally dried up emotional prune with only Gabrielle able to break through her emotional armor. Nope, nope, nope. In the very first episode, we see Xena vulnerable and hurting from her mother's rejection, almost pleading with Draco about how she can go home again. We see how tenderness, sorrow and pain as she takes care of her brother's casket and talks to him about her feelings. In the second ep, Chariots of War, we see Xena playing with the children, teasing them, charming them and bonding with them. And exchanging flirtatious, come-hither looks with their daddy. (I LOVE how when Xena goes off to fight, he trundles off after her bringing her her chakram. I could just envision that if they had gotten together, there'd be Xena off defending their town and children while Darius comes out and brings her her lunch every day. And probably sings at night, "Stand by your warrior...") In The Path Not Taken, we see her mourning over the fallen Marcus, grieving for her loss. In The Black Wolf we hear about her warm and loving history with Flora. In Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts, we see Xena give a beautiful huge Lawless smile to Helen and a big ol' hug when she arrives after responding to Helen's call for help. In Ties That Bind, we see Xena's heartbreak over having lost her father so young and wanting so much to have him back. And so on and so on and so on and so on. Lucy has always shown Xena's wounded heart just below the stoical surface. It's one of the most appealing aspects of Xena's character to me. She IS tough. But she's also a human being who's been very hurt by events and her own responses to them. This is a large part of what makes her such a special and unique hero in this all too often shallow and superficial genre. One of XWP's greatest strengths is that it presents its hero's humanity and emotional responses to life, far more than most other T&A action adventure stories do. And it shows her showing that grief and pain to others whom she cares about. > > > > Did Harukata realise the implications of what he was telling her? Throughout the whole series, Xena responds to calls for help from friends. Helen, Marcus, Salmoneus, Lao Ma, Cleopatra all send for her and get her, to name just a few. Hell, some of them are even dead and she still goes off to see what they want. That grrl is just a traveling fool. > > Actually I think Xena sees herself as a failure quite often. She failed > Lyceus, Milia and in many ways La Mao. Young has enough of an ego to > overcome each failure but I think Akemi just through over the edge. Snipped excellent discussion of Xena's belief that she has failed to protect many people she loves in many circumstances over many years. I've written about this belief of hers before. And this is what I see the most in her relationship with Gabrielle. I think that the minute she saw Gabrielle standing up to Draco's army, she was brought back to her own history, to what it cost her when she stood up to Cortez. And where it led her. And she was determined to not have that young girl start off on Xena's path. Of course, in show order, Gabrielle is the first young person she tries to save and protect. But as we know by the end of the series, Gabrielle is just one of a number of people whom Xena loved. And most of whom she lost during her lifetime. First, Xena comes to the rescue, after Daddy Darius gets knocked out. Next we see him tenderly caring for her, saying, "not in my house" when she wants to keep her weapons on, giving her a look when she's telling the kids about her fight with the Titans, and trying to persuade her not to fight the warlords. Darius probably would've wanted her to give up her warrior ways, but, as you suggest, I bet he'd have resigned himself to it and been content to support "mommy" as she went off to fight. I agree with comments I snipped, that Xena showed a range of emotions in "Chariots." I especially liked how she got the little girl to finally talk again. Children's reactions are usually a good barometer for what lies beneath the surface in characters. Xena passed with flying colors. <> Agreed again. I sometimes dismissively refer to Robocop, in terms of what I wouldn't have wanted Xena to be, forgetting that his appeal also lay in the human emotions all that metal and technology couldn't suppress. Lucy infused Xena with passion and a lust for life, an emotional breadth and depth that "stoic" can't even begin to do justice. << Throughout the whole series, Xena responds to calls for help from friends. Tapert talks about Xena's seeing her lost innocence in some of the younger folks she was attracted to. I do believe she saw herself in Gabrielle -- before it became corrupted. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I think > both her pride and naivete set her up to defend him, along with her belief in > people's innocence before proven guilty. I think that this a very good point that Gabrielle's pride is on the line here. She does know Meleager and I think she is justified in expecting Xena to have faith in her. It just would have been a nice touch if she could have mentioned this to Xena instead of hearing off on her own. Of course at the point they arrive Meleager has been proven guilty and there is an eye witness. Xena is not being pig headed she does investigate and the evidence is pretty convincing that Meleager is guilty/ > > I also thought this was one of the eps that presaged the rift, in terms of > establishing Gabrielle's growing independence. That is an excellent point. Gabrielle is now staring to exert her independence and to relie on her won judgement but more than that she is starting to question Xena. In fact in this case Gabrielle is proven right - Meleager is innocent. Gabrielle begins to see that Xena is not infallible. > > I'm just sorry they came up with such a convenient way for Xena > to know the truth, as it would've been very interesting to see what happened > if Xena had to rely on Gabrielle's instincts alone. Methinks Meleager might've > been toast. Actually it would have been nice if the solution would have been a bit more complicated and if Gabrielle had more of a hand in solving the mystery. Gabrielle is right but she is right by pure dumb luck. It would have been nice if she could have proven herself right by some other means. > > Anyway, I liked eps where there was a bit of conflict between X&G, which > acknowledged how the differences between them could play out. It is one of the things I liked abou the show was that you did have two very strong individuals who had very strong beliefs and ideals. When push came to shove both would stand up to the other if the thought they other was wrong. Xena may have often been exasperated by Gabrielle's principals but she never denigrated them. Both women always tried to respect the others point of view. In this case Gabrielle had to stand up for her friend and Xena was also honor bound to stand up for hers. Xena's pursuit of Meleager had more to do with getting Gabrielle out of Arbis's clutches than taking Meleager back for execution. In an odd way both women were acting to defend their friends.
