I agree there was a lot that felt contrived in this ep, but not moreso than I often felt about most of the eps. It wasn't all that unusual for early Gabrielle to stick up for folks she didn't know or to get Xena involved in helping them. Heck, Gabrielle knew Xena for a lot less time before following the WP, putting herself in front of a lynch mob for the WP and becoming the immediate "friend" of someone with a lot worse rep than Meleager. She actually had more invested in Meleager, in terms of singlehandedly helping him restore his honor and usefulness, being his mentor in a way like Herc was to Xena. I think both her pride and naivete set her up to defend him, along with her belief in people's innocence before proven guilty. I also thought this was one of the eps that presaged the rift, in terms of establishing Gabrielle's growing independence. This was perhaps the first time Gabrielle knew more about someone than Xena (except maybe Perdicus). She'd worked with Meleager, fought beside him, gotten to see both sides of his character. Xena hadn't. I think she was miffed that Xena didn't seem to respect this and reacted with her usual cynicism, as though her experience with people in general trumped Gabrielle's personal experience with a particular individual. This was also not the first time Gabrielle did what she believed in, despite Xena's wishes, nor would it be the last. It's not the first time she questioned Xena's judgment or stood against the WP when she thought Xena was wrong about people Gabrielle didn't even know ("Fist Full of Dinars," "Ties That Bind"). I thought the whole "Xena as the real killer" angle was much more contrived than Gabrielle's loyalty to Meleager and her willingness to defend him even against Xena. I'm just sorry they came up with such a convenient way for Xena to know the truth, as it would've been very interesting to see what happened if Xena had to rely on Gabrielle's instincts alone. Methinks Meleager might've been toast. Anyway, I liked eps where there was a bit of conflict between X&G, which acknowledged how the differences between them could play out. I thought both of their reactions in this ep were plausible, even though some of the surrounding events were not. I liked that Xena didn't do her "Gabs can see into the heart of people" routine, even as she tried to give Gabs the benefit of the doubt. I liked that Xena had to deal with her conflicting emotions about proving Gabrielle wrong, then later having to help restore Gabrielle's confidence in Meleager. Bottom line, both X&G initially went with their guts -- as they would do during much of season three, but without the safety net of improbable plot devices coming to the rescue. (Those devices which were reserved for ways to destroy the safety net in S3. Heh.) - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. But that really has no connection with my opinion of it. I guess I just don't go for the acrobatics. Never did, really. I like the occasional individual move, like Xena's flip over the 'altar' in Chakram, but more than a few seconds of it starts to look contrived to me. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. She is clearly still in contact with many of the XWP and Ren Pic staff. She was meeting up with one of the ex directors that evening. She also talked about visiting the set of Boogeyman and knowing so many of the people working on it.
