She was asked about this. She didn't have any immediate plane to direct again IIRC, but she talked a lot about producing. In particular she seemed to be very taken with this after working on Diamonds and Guns (I think that is the correct title, but ...) and she was talking about producing a sequel to it. She was also keen to work again with two of the women from that movie. I think it was the writer and director. She was certainly looking forward to 2004 being a busy year. She expressed a desire to so more Shakespeare and had visited Shakespeare by the Sea again, but not as an actor, but to catch up with friends and this seems to have made her feel like trying Shakespeare again. I always think of it as a second rate episode and then when I watch it I really enjoy it. Tim Thomerson is very enjoyable as Maleager and I like his lovable rogue. I also like his Dutch Uncle relationship with Gabrielle. Gabrielle is the kind of character that just calls for a roguish uncle in her life - someone who can get her and Xena into all kinds of trouble but Xena can't kill because her friend loves him. I also like the fact that Gabrielle is so clever in this episode. It's fun to watch her manipulate the guards into a feeding frenzy so they will fall into a gluttonous coma so she can free her friend. It is this aspect of Gabrielle's character, a mischievous cleverness, that I think a lot of fans missed when Gabrielle became a darker and more mature character. It was perhaps inevitable that Gabrielle would lose some of that over time but it was fun to watch that re-emerge in the sixth season with the God You Know and Many Happy Returns. My main problem I had with this episode was that felt Gabrielle's loyalty to Meleager was out of proportion to her relationship with him. She hardly knows this guy but she is willing to risk her life and Xena's life to save him. She also is ready to put Meleager ahead of her friendship with Xena. Now if Meleager had been a long time friend or family I might buy Gabrielle's desperation to save him but there is no basis for Gabrielle acting as rashly as she does here. I know that the script set everything up so Gabrielle had to act quickly - Xena's respect for the judge, the quick execution, etc.- but it seemed so contrived. In fact the whole plot is just on contrivance after another - Xena is the real killer but she was defending a guy who coincidently knew that the judge had knowingly sent an innocent man to his death. The after making all these discoveries what bearing does this have the stories plot. The judge seems to honestly believe Meleager is guilty of murder. There is no evidence that Arbis has contrived to kill Meleager to cover up his crime. The whole subplot of the judge executing an innocent man seems to have no meaning since the judge never mentions it as his motivation for any of his action. This could have been just a simple murder mystery and a story about an over zealous judge. Anyway there are really good moments. The fight between Xena and Meleager is just dandy. Xena's feral pleasure at fighting a warrior of her own standing is fun to watch. Meleager's father-daughter chat with Gabrielle is sweet. The Lurch- like executioner with his comfy funeral garb. Also Argo gets to strut her stuff as she catapults Xena into the middle of a brawl.
