Not that I usually agree with Jackie, but count me in on this one. I was totally swept away with the emotion Xena was feeling and inability to give up was so real to me." I agree absolutely. Lucy was wonderful as grief and raged warred in her. CherylA >> Me too! I remember the promos that said something like "see Lucy Lawless as you've never seen her before." I figured this was the usual hype until I saw the ep. On Coffee Talk, Lucy and Renee talk about how the director made them do the resuscitation scene over and over, until both of them felt a little desperate -- Lucy to revive Gabrielle, and ROC to finally be revived -- which also led to some genuine surprise and relief. Even the usually playfully dismissive Lucy seemed moved when she watched it. Given Lucy's understated, somber, stoic portrayal up to that point, I was stunned when she "let go" as she did. I also knew next to nothing about her as a person or actress. I admired the risks she'd already taken with Xena, in terms of creating such an unself-consciously dark and physical character, but frankly hadn't expected the emotional depth revealed in "Doctor." Later, of course, I found out that Lucy believes in taking risks and is quite capable of tapping into a wide range of emotions. I'll always have a special memory of that ep. I think it was a wonderful way to communicate that Xena had a lot more to her than we'd seen, which promised more character development in the future -- not just more exotic scenery or fights. It also made me trust Xenastaff's ability to "knock my socks off" in ways I hadn't imagined. Mostly it made me realize that Lucy had a lot more to her than I expected, that the restraint I'd seen for most of season one (and would still see later) was the result of talent that made it seem so "natural." When we got "Orphan" right off in season 2, it had more emotional depth because "Doctor" had given me a new appreciation for the deep emotions roiling under the surface. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. But I wouldn't say the CPR scene in ITADITH was one of them at all. >> Um - even if they could - why would someone want to "restrain" a deep emotion, especially in a case like this? Isn't the purpose of wailing to allow a grieving person to "let it out"? Certainly there are people who keep it in to the point where it'll come out physically (e.g., ulcers, depression), or they'll take it out on others (which Evil Xena tended to do, as with that girl in Sin Trade). Others commit suicide. << IMO, stoic X would've been angry or searching for answers or remedies or just plain resigned, but probably not whiny and accusatory and flailing. _That_ I just couldn't believe. X was never helpless, even in the face of death, which, I might remind everyone, she had seen *many, many, many* times before....... >> But don't we see all what you suggest -- anger, searching, resignation, helplessness, as well as deep anguish? The Xena we see here is as stoic and determined as ever. She makes hard decisions about whom to work on first, does everything she can to save folks, yet sadly accepts that some will die. She does all that she can for Gabs, resignedly says, 'It's up to her now," watches helplessly as Gabs goes into unexpected convulsions, angrily pushes that young man away (Hippocrates?) when he tells Xena to give up. I think the point was that things were out of her control, which led to losing the tight lid she kept on her emotions. She had nowhere else to turn except to beg -- make -- Gabrielle to come back. In a sense, it was her desperation that "invented" CPR (pounding on Gabs' chest), as much as searching for answers ("Maybe she needs air"). Maybe this is another case of different ideas about what's "real." It's real to me that the most stoic person can run into situations where they "lose it," when they can't "restrain" or repress what they feel no matter how hard they try. It's not real to me that Xena (if she's human) would not at some time feel helpless -- especially since she took such personal responsibility for, and believed she could do something about, nearly everything she touched. It's that "reality" that made me care about Xena as a "person." << Again, G figures in as X's "Achilles Heel" = wimp. ;P >> Isn't that true of most of us -- that those we love are our "weak spots" when it comes to our emotions, our judgment, or willingess to sacrifice or defend? Did you feel the same way later when Xena screamed at Solan's death? Do you think she should've shown more restraint then too? Apparently, this ep was to show us how much Gabs had gotten to Xena. Is it that you believe Xena wouldn't have felt so much for Gabrielle that this would be the first time we see Xena "lose it" like that? I guess I'm trying to understand if it's Xena's "losing it" over Gabrielle that you don't believe or Xena's ever "losing it" like that for any reason. - -- Ife - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
