I decided to revisit one of those eps I don't think about much -- Ulysses (near the end of season 2). That in turn made me think about a recent question about when "soulmates" first used. I remember our talking about it as a concept, but not whether we'd heard the term actually used before the last couple of seasons. If somebody found the first reference, you can ignore the rest of this. Ulysses tells Xena he feels like he's known her all his life and asks if that sounds crazy. Xena says, "I dunno." She glances at the supposedly sleeping Gabrielle and adds, "She believes everyone has a soulmate on earth, made just for them." Ulysses says he thinks Xena's his soulmate. Xena smiles back noncommitedly. What did he know, eh? Ironically, this may also be the first ep where Xena credits Gabrielle with opening the WP's heart up to love again (presumably post-Marcus). Xena surprises Gabs by using "love" in connection with Ulysses. Xena's a little surprised herself, except she says she might not have been able to feel what she did for Ulysses "if not for you." Gabs was probably thinking, "Hmmm, I should've been more specific in my instructions." Anyway, I was struck once again by how often overlooked eps have these little nuggets in them. As with Tsunami, everybody may not like those nuggets (or even think of them as nuggets of gold necessarily), but they're there for us to rediscover on rainy nights when we might decide to relax with old friends we haven't seen for awhile. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. You do like to play with fire, don't you? Let's see .... Do I have any thoughts on that subject? If I think real hard .... Q1: Yes, though I don't think she was expressing pride, so much as stating the standards she expects from herself, which she probably does take pride in. Q2: No, though I think she believed he defined his own self-worth and didn't care squat about (or would understand) her opinion of his. He asked why did *she* do what she did, what did *she* expect. She gave him her honest answer, which I thought was more respectful than ignoring or patronizing him. Q3 (Which you didn't ask, but is implied) -- Where would hubris rank among Xena's many sins? My answer: Back when she thought she was the center of the universe and destined to rule the world, I'd say it was a major reason for her other sins. Once she came down to earth and committed to managing her flaws for good ends, I'd say it was major reason for her success in overcoming her "bad" side. And they say you can't get anything from a dead horse. Or maybe there's no such thing as a dead horse in the Xenaverse? - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Okay, 'soul mate' or 'soulmate' occurred in: Friend in Need 2 Deja Vu Valkyrie The Ring Lyre Lyre (Draco!) Ulysses The Apple (note this was the first appearance of Aphrodite and she was causing nothing but trouble) So anyway, as far as Xena is concerned, Ulysses is probably the first ep where it was mentioned. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I resemble that comment... > Such a ship is *not* stable, it will tend to either rise faster > and faster (as the pressure decreases and the air giving it > buoyancy expands) or sink faster (as the air is compressed). This is quite correct. Also, a ship has ballast, especially a sailing ship. In general, it is composed of rocks in the bottom of the ship. Where did it go? Makes a lot of difference to the issue. > However, it's not quite so blatant a > whatever-we-decided-to-call-these-things-instead-of-'YAXI' as > many in the series. The problem, for me, is that this is only one of several errors. Most were gratuitous: The ship is headed is a dangerous direction, so Xena decides to steer it away. Two problems here: the vessel isn't making way (it isn't moving with respect to the water), so it cannot be steered passively; and Xena uses a rudder -- invented about two thousand years later (there is a reason one side of a ship is called 'starboard', after all). To escape the ship, everyone needs a supply of air. Not so. In fact, everyone needs to get *rid* of air -- for the reason cr noted. For escape from subs, there is a plastic hood-like item called a Steinke hood. One breathes into it on the way up. It not only keeps your head in air, it also provides buoyancy. But it does not provide air. Neither of these errors were essential -- or even especially important -- to the plot. They could have done these things correctly without changing the thrust of the ep. But in the end, what disappointed me most was that I saw no character development here -- indeed, it even struck me that Autolycus was regressing into a former whiney self. And the rest of 'em? Right out of the usual cast of characters. No imagination at all. It felt like a going-by-numbers ep. Mind you, I haven't gotten around to buying a DVD player yet, but I do have a brand new, not yet used, DVD/CD/CDR drive in my computer. On to the questions: - -Can I play these DVD's on my computer? - -When I get a DVD player, will I then be able to play the DVD's on both the player and on my computer? - -Are there any features on the DVD's that only work with a player or a computer? - -Am I right that I need to install the CyberLink POwerDVD XP 4.0 software that came with the DVD/CD/CDR drive before I can view the Xena DVD's? The other CD that came with the drive is a Roxio CD that appears to be for burning CD's. Lastly, if anyone can think of anything a newbie needs to know about DVD's that I don't even know enough to ask about, please feel free to add to the discussion. Thank you. - -- Cousin Liz eas01@fast.net Soulmates Xena Dinosaur Bards http://cousinliz.com ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
