This one is from Entertainment Weekly. It's in the week that had that great picture of the naked Dixie Chicks on the cover, wearing only epithets that their fellow Americans had called them. _________________________________________________ It would be easy to dismiss ''Xena: Warrior Princess'' as a campy spin-off of an even campier syndicated series (namely, ''Hercules: The Legendary Journeys'') because, well, it was. But there was more to ''Xena'' than just the bitchin' battle cry. Star Lucy Lawless ushered in a new era of TV action heroine, one who was strong, smart, and -- of course -- sexy. But what set ''Xena'' apart from copycats like ''Queen of Swords,'' ''Relic Hunter,'' and, perhaps most regrettably, ''Sheena,'' was its mix of well-choreographed stunts and absurd ancient-era fun (a formula first concocted by ''Xena'' exec producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi on ''Army of Darkness''). Xena: Warrior Princess Season One remains the finest: The newly reformed Xena still has the capacity to turn evil, making the character more than just a one-dimensional do-gooder. Plus, the first seeds of her sapphic relationship with Gabrielle are oh-so-subtly planted. Throw in such colorful characters as the thieving Autolycus, Ares God of War, and she-villain Callisto, and you have a show for the ages. Of course, I'm probably overanalyzing. If you just wanna see a fatal-Frisbee-packin' mama repeatedly kick bad guys in their family jewels, look no further. ___________________________________ They give it a B+ KT ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Well, possibly 'irrelevant' was the wrong word, but put it this way: modern-day episodes (Clones, SP) are _not_ relevant to the 'normal' storyline of Xena and Gabs, regardless of when they screen. Just as Deja Vu was irrelevant to the Ides - Fallen Angel arc. I *liked* Clones, but it really had nothing to do with the Xena-Gabs story. And I think, had it been shown as the last-ever ep, a lot of people would have felt disappointed. > That has nothing to do with what TPTB or you or I choose to see as > irrelevant, illogical or not "canon." It's out there, even if you choose not to > accept it.) Oh, I entirely accept Clones, and Deja Vu, etc - but they are, explicitly, 'outside' the main storyline. (One reason amongst many that I can't accept MWF - because it purports to be 'in' the main story and I can't rationalise it.) > ending. They all fit together OK, there is no logical problem. Well, yes, the fans were obviously there for the comedy. As to what's in the clones' heads, one could predicate some magical way to place all the 'real' experiences there - but, in the absence of that, the best available substitute would be Alti's DVD's. > > Omigod! And she looked down at the fan and answered, "I did." Then she raised her eyebrows and challenged, "Is that a problem?" Cracked everybody up. (Including Vicky.) Her husband of course is T. J. Scott, who's directed a handful of Xena eps" I didn't know that and that brings up the question of why wasn't he a guest speaker too. Creations should have hired him on the spot. I love when we have the technical people at the Cons and it would have been great to hear from a director, especially one who has such a unique vision. "At some point this day, we had the Kimmel Show folks show up. Without any set-up or introduction, this big, unattractive man dressed as Xena jumped up on stage. He began to chant, "Xena! Xena" and waved his arms beckoningly to us to join in with him." I thought actually he was loose lunatic and I was wondering when security was going to take him away. When it looked like security did take him a way I was not surprised. "I always wonder why those fans who go to Xena cons dressed up to display their fandom are considered so much more strange than folks who go to sports events and wear giant cheese wedges on their heads or paint their faces in their team's color schemes or write huge numbers on their bare chests or wear enormous foam hands with the "We're number one!" finger sticking up on them. There doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between these two expressions of support for something one enjoys that I can see. Of course, we do see a lot of those sporting fans on camera too..." Acutally TV crews seem to always focus on the more "colorful characters. A few years the town where I'm from had the number 1 high school footbal team. Nightline did a segment on us - they filmed the shabbbist part of the town and interviewed inviduals who had painted faces. Their emphasis seemed to say here's this poor rust belt town populated with people who are so hopeless their only point of pride is the football team. It made a pretty good segment but it represented almost nothing about the town. "At any rate, I thought the Kimmel thing was ugly and obviously focused upon trying to make us look stupid. I felt they sure didn't deserve any cooperation from us and was very glad to see they didn't get much." Actually the segment on the Kimmel show was pretty good. The people interviewed were the guy who dresses as Xena (he is always interviewed) and two rather sensible women, who I think weren't Amaericans. The fans came off a bit puzzled by the whole encounter and the only who came off as odd was the guy from the Kimmel show, who I acyually felt sorry for. It wasn't disrespectful at all which isn't that surprising since Lucy was the guest that night and I doubt if she would have been pleased to have her fans rediculed. In fact I thought it was one of Lucy's better talk show appearances. She seemed relaxed and had a great put down for Hugh Hefner. Lucy appearantly refused a Plyboy shoot and Kimmel was teasing her about maybe changing her mind. She then said that when Playboy showed real women like Jeanne Garlafalo (sorry about the spelling) then maybe she would consider it. It was funny because they had just shown Hefs current silicon bimbos. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Do you not accept that the Xenaverse is so vast that it encompasses every period up to the present and beyond? That it covers every version of creation and afterlife, as well as simultaneous timelines and dreamworlds? There is little "linear" about XWP. Even your reliance on episode sequence is flawed, given that many were shown out of their originally planned order or not orginally planned at all. Well, do what you must to achieve "logic" about that. I'll look for other things to rationalize -- like Gabs slapping Xena. Grrrr. > > Omigod! You did? Why, you ol' closet romantic, you. > > Closet? Have your wife 'splain to you why *some* people might see romantic qualities in the sitting-close-with-arm-behind-Gabrielle-clinking-champagne-glasses scene, 'k?
