Joxer was clumsy and incompetent but certainly no coward. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I know. :) I wasn't asking about cons, I was asking whether people are still going to them, because I wonder...lately the Xenite turnout at them seems low. :( > If your primary desire is to go to cons with stars, you might want to try > DragonCon. I know all about DragonCon, I've been wanting to go for years but getting to Atlanta from here is a bit of a hassle, and I've never been able to afford it all...sigh...eventually! I did notice that last yr there wasn't much of a Xena track planned, which is a shame. And so far it looks like no Xena guests are scheduled yet either. :( > > What this con does, as do many fancons, is they substitute other things. > Panel discussions are a big part of the programming. Amen to that! -Sarah, aka the abbagirl- P.S. Less than a week now till Xena Season 1 comes out on dvd, woo-hoo!! :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Hi, Re cons... personally I prefer the fan-run cons, in particular the ones where media is just one facet of the convention: Boskone, Lunacon, I-Con, Worldcon etc. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get to any of those in years, but I have many fond memories. :) The thing about the fan-run cons is, you don't feel like nothing more than a revenue stream, like you do at a Creation con. The fans who run cons know what their fellow fans want to experience. There is a variety of stuff going on at one time, so you're not stuck having to deal with the schedule you're handed. The first time I went to a Creation con, I wasn't prepared for how much of a Staged Event it was. Since my experience was of the "let's look at the schedule and see which of the seven panels, three readings, two multimedia presentations and four showings occurring in ten minutes I want to go to" type of convention, it was quite a letdown. Of course, as bookdaft pointed out the fan-run cons are less likely to have actors present, but often you can have just as much fun without them. As for Sarah's question of who is still going to cons ... I'm not, but that's more due to a busy schedule than anything else. If I lived within driving distance of Pasadena, you know I'd be there every year! In general, though, I would expect that Xenite attendance at cons would be subsiding at this point. The show has been off the air for two years already, and with the rebroadcast rights still tied up on a cable network with a microscopic reach (yes, after all this time I am STILL wondering just what the hell TPTB were thinking), it's no surprise that it's dropping off the radar of even the most die-hard of fans. My initial experience was with fan-run cons, so I suppose I'm biased. But fancons are run by fans for fans. The well-run fancons try to tailor the needs and desires to the fan membership. I think Creation cons do all right as long as the attendee keeps in mind that it is a business and any fees they charge are predicated on that premise. If the fan is willing to pay for things under that understanding, then the fans will continue to keep organizations like Creation in business. But gimme a good fancon any day. <<>> Some of what Meredith says above is true, but attendance at any con ebbs and flows with the economy, too. I've already talked to my friends and they are worried about this year's con. Gordon is worried that attendance won't be as much as in previous years because they may not have money for air fare and hotel rooms. MediaWestCon is international, so there is the worry that SARS may have an impact on attendance, as well. It is conceivable that any reduction in Xena con attendance is due to fan drop-off in interest in the show, but people simply may not have the money to go. Or if they go, they may sit on their hands and not spend money. There are a lot of reasons for fan drop-off in con attendance and I think a good proportion of it has to do with how much money an individual has to spend. I don't have any facts to support my impression, other than many years of con-going and watching that fan atttendance. Of course, this is all my personal opinion. Mileage may vary. bd ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
