I also liked the way Joxer and Gab kept getting befuddled with X in Callisto's body. BTW... I was impressed with how Joxer was willing to go up against who he thought was Callisto in order to try and save Argo!! now quickly scurrying back to lurkdom.... Sorry about the belatedness of this response, but there it is. There are lots of conventions out there, depending on what you want to see. If your primary desire is to go to cons with stars, you might want to try DragonCon. It still runs a Xena track, or at least Missy Good still intends on running a Xena track. Last year's attendance to the track was low because not many XWP stars made to the track and other guests had to bow out. Missy herself couldn't be there because of work commitments, which probably prompted some of her fans to not attend. But I think she is going to try to do the track again this year. DragonCon also runs several other tracks including a Buffy, X-Files, Stargate SG-1 (I think) and Farscape (also another 'I think'), as well as a science track. DragonCon started out as a local science fiction con (I recall seeing flyers for it at the 1987 Worldcon). It is held in Atlanta and is relatively cheap, considering all the celebrities it brings in. Check it out at DragonCon's website (www.dragoncon.org). If you don't care about seeing stars, there are fancons which don't offer any celebrities. Most of these conventions tend to be small and intimate, although some can be fairly sizeable. I have friends who run a science fiction/media convention annually in Lansing, Michigan. This one tends to run about 800 - 900 attendees, mostly because of the size of the hosting hotel. It is considered one of the biggest, if not the biggest sf fancon in the Midwest. (I'm name-dropping now, but Lori Chapek-Carleton was mentioned several times in Henry Jenkins' TEXTUAL POACHERS.) Lori and Gordon have never invited celebrities to MediaWestCon, because it is too costly. However, a couple of actors, Chris Demetral (Jules Verne from THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF JULES VERNE) and the actor who played Morn from STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE 9 both paid to come to the con. Chris said he had such a good time he was hoping to come this year. That's about it for any actors attending this con. What this con does, as do many fancons, is they substitute other things. Panel discussions are a big part of the programming. The fans suggest the kinds of things they want to talk about. I suggested a couple of Xena panels for this year's up coming con, myself. There are a wide-ranging interest in film, television, books, writing, Internet fan fiction and other things. For those who are interested, the con's website is: http://members.aol.com/mdiawstcon/mwc.htm . This is probably far more information than you wanted, but there are lots of conventions out there that may have what you want. Many have websites. Try doing a search on science fiction conventions. I got a retrieval of 208,000 sites (many of them were past cons) so you might consider narrowing the search. At any rate, there are a lot of cons out there and most of them are a lot of fun, with interesting things to do. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Sarah Anne Packard Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 5:56 PM To: chakram-refugees@smoe.org Subject: [chakram-refugees] Conventions! Hey all...I was wondering, do you folks still go to conventions (Xena or otherwise)? I've still been going to them, although not as many Creation ones lately...(especially since Creation keeps lessening the Xena content/guests/emphasis and combining em with Trek cons, sigh). I think I'm gonna go to the Brooklyn, NY Creation "salute to strong women of sci-fi" one in August, cuz it has HUDSON, Danielle, Claire and Alex so far...I am also *definitely* going to 2 Buffy cons (which will be my first Buffy con experiences! Has anyone been to a Buffy con? Is anyone going to any this year?) very soon, Cleveland Vulkon in April and Flashback Chicago in May. It seems like when I go to cons these days though, it's harder to find my fellow Xenites...and at the Buffy cons I dunno who I'll hang out with, since I'm going alone and I don't really know Buffy fans from online like I do with Xena. Oh well. Anyway, I was just thinking about cons...and wondering how people feel about them nowadays. -Sarah, aka the abbagirl- ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
