Score one for Alti! 8-) I was just thinking of the scene in the 'Making of FIN' video where Lucy is working with the stunt doubles to choreograph a fight. And it's quite obvious that this is all acting, from Lucy's and everyone else's point of view. After several rehearsals and several takes, any relationship in their minds to 'real' violence must be vanishingly small. Just as Lucy never became emotionally involved in the subtext (I flatly refuse to use the phrase "didn't 'get' it", because that implies patronisingly that LL was less perceptive than the subtext fans), never became emotionally involved with Ares, was never afflicted by depression over the loss of Solan.... so the violence was just another feature of the show that LL acted when working and left behind when off the set. Xena would not be a good role to become 'lost' in. But LL never had any trouble keeping fiction and reality apart, unlike some. (I note that her real depression in Sin Trade was not contributed to by the loss of Gabrielle, but by not having a familiar face - ROC - to act opposite, which is a very different thing). Although that fan's questions implied some sort of moral judgement hanging around in the background, I don't think there's a moral question involved. One doesn't have to believe in Nazism in order to play Hitler in a movie. So long as a character's violence wasn't shown to be a Good Thing (which overall it certainly wasn't) then I can't see any moral criticism that can be levelled at the actor. This applies of course to Claire and Hudson and all the others just as much as Lucy. I know some people take the view that *any* on-screen violence is bad, but why would those people watch Xena? It's a bit like watching the Playboy Channel and complaining about the nudity.... cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
