It > it doesn't jive with what she said last week it's because she felt > differently last week. > Oh, I couldn't agree more. I got my copy of the actual magazine, so could read everything in context. The writer didn't seem to know much about Lucy, let alone "Xena." His unspoken approach seemed to be, "Okay, somehow you've become our biggest Kiwi star. Show me what you got." He questioned some of her recent choices ("curiosities") and didn't seem to quite "get" why she didn't express more concern about moving beyond fame he labeled "utterly intertwined with her on-screen doppelganger" -- saying "her versatility is unknown" and calling whatever she was doing now "filling in time waiting for the right role, the role that will lift her to the next level." Still, I feel the interviewer treated Lucy with respect and probably did a good job of capturing those various, different moods Lucy tends to express -- including the "ambivalence" he described in her feelings about "Xena." It's clear her strongest emotions were about her children's safety, as well as the fans attacks on Tapert and the greater respect she felt Kiwis should've given him, the show and the opportunities they offered local talent. "She sounds angry," the writer notes, "but then her mood quickly brightens. 'The moment we finish talking about this,' she says, smiling, 'I'll never think of it again.'" I doubt he left out much of what she wanted to communicate at the time. He certainly includes a great summation of why she sang with Dave Dobbyns, perhaps captured in the comment, "For me it became the nostalgia tour .... I revisited all those things I'd shunned for years" and "You don't need a reason to do anything. Just do it and leave it for other people to try and write things about it. It just amuses me." All in all, I thought it was a great interview, where you'd have to competely disregard some of it in order to focus entirely on either the good or negative things she had to say about her "Xena" experience. I just wished there'd been a note about her choice of costume for the cover. Or maybe somebody asked her and she simply winked. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I remember posting on Chakram at the time that even in S5, around Jan. 2000 in a Starlog issue that had to have been written long before that date because of publishing deadlines, that LL was indicating physical strain with the show and some non-enthusiasm about continuing past S6. Not only that, but I think that was around the time Julius was born or she was pregnant with him, and no doubt she wanted to spend more time with her newborn. RJStewart was quoted in that article as saying he wasn't sure if they would go beyond S6, all things considered. So they knew, even at that time, that things were limited, regardless of the studio's intentions. >On the other hand, she clearly said she was tired and ready to move on, >but felt a responsibility to everyone employed by XWP to give it her best shot >as long as possible. Then as now, she was in a tough position, where I do >believe she balanced diplomacy and honesty as best she could. - --Yes, I think LL was trying to be diplomatic. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if she were as stressed as she's now saying she was (and having to go to therapy in order to continue to work on a TV show is getting *pretty stressed*, IMO), she should've just come out and said so (and I'm sure the fans would've understood), rather than trying to "give it the old college try" for an illusory S7 that her heart wasn't really into. If she wasn't enthusiastic about S7, I don't think it would've done the show any good for her to force herself on. I guess I'm just wondering why she couldn't be honest at the time and say so? I'm not attacking her motives, just wondering, since she was usually quite up-front in earlier interviews. >I think she wanted to remain positive, despite the uncertainties. It >seems perfectly normal to me that she would look back on it all now and >express what she felt more freely and articulately after some distance. - --I think she feels "safe" now to say what she was really feeling at the time. I'm just wondering why she didn't feel "safe" back then? On Fri, 14 Mar 2003 21:40:18 -0500, "Cheryl Ande" wrote: >As far as I know Lucy didn't quit the show nor did Renee. I think if Rob wanted it to go on Lucy would have done it. - --Yes, LL said she would've gone on for the good of the show, but as I mentioned earlier, would it have been as good a show, knowing her heart wasn't in it? And would she have been doing the show any good to "force" herself to go on? In that, I think her reasoning was flawed, but that's just MO. ;) And as she's said before, "that's a toughie". ;/ >Then on the other hand Lucy took great pride in the show and her >husband who created the show that made her famous and wealthy. - --Yes, that was clear. ;) What I never understood, though, was her avoidance of coming to RT's defense directly when the fans would criticize him (especially re: FIN). I think a lot of the criticism would've stopped if she had issued some public statement saying, basically, "cease and desist". ;/ > Lucy probably had ambiguous feelings - there were days she hated >Xena and days she loved Xena. I get the impression she is the type of person >who goes with her gut on any given day and you get what she is feeling >that day. - --Yup, I totally understand being held accountable for one's own words on a daily basis (I just changed jobs and am now working for Ms. Callisto, the BFH [B*tch From H*ll], who nit-picks at everything I say ;( ), but I don't think that's what I'm getting at. ;) If LL were having such trouble maintaining spirits on-set that she had to go for therapy and was having bouts of depression, etc., it would've been better for her personally to just admit she was human and limited, and that she didn't intend to work beyond S6 (which was in her contract, anyway). The fans would've respected her wishes much more than if it came from the studio or the producers. And it probably would've squashed some of the criticisms leveled at RT, IMO. The current issue includes a fascinating article about the debate over the settlement date for New Zealand. (I had no idea that New Zealand has had continuous human habitation for fewer years than any landmass on earth besides Antarctica.) The online version doesn't show the really cool pictures (including one of a painting depicting a group of Maori dancing a haka), but you can at least read an abstract of the article if you're interested: http://www.archaeology.org/magazine.php?page=0303/abstracts/newzealand =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
