We have built him up as the essential American hero - cowboy and soldier. The truth is he was a Stanford football player named Myron Morrison who was a 4-F because of football injuries. The reality isn't bad but we like the legend better. //// That's not what I read in a biography of Wayne. According to this book, he was not 4-F. He was exempt from the draft because he had four children. Yes I've heard both stories. I think I did understand that his knees were very bad and probably couldn't pass the physical. Then again Clark Gable got in and physically he was a mess - ulcers and no teeth. So perhaps you are right about the children. As you say, there is usually a difference between a legend and the facts. When I see Wayne in a film I enjoy him as an icon. I don't worry about the real man. Oh I have nothing against John Wayne the actor or the man at all. He has made some of my favorite movies - The Searchers, The Quit Man, etc. The legend is what others have ascribed to him. I don't think he saw himself as that hero, although I think a bit of his movie persona crept into his real life. Perhaps it just annoys me a bit simply because actors like Stewart, Fonda, Lew Ayres (a conscientious objector who serve with distinction as a medic), George Montgomersy and served and often are overlooked CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
