Kahina, of course, had no specifics to go on, just general principles, and we don't know exactly what was in the scrolls she read (or the copies that may have filtered down to her). I doubt if Gabby's scrolls showed Xena as being particularly deceptive towards allies, because usually she wasn't. But Kahina suspected Xena (correctly) of setting up the Roman attack. Certainly Gabby would have written the scrolls from her point of view, which is not necessarily that of an impartial observer. Your point about legends, though, makes me think about the way in which, for example, statements by TPTB rapidly acquire a quite different flavour by the time they've been repeated a couple of times. On another list I'm engaged in a mild debate over whether Lucy was responsible for starting rumours that a Xena movie was imminent - it seems to me (reading the Lesbian News article) that she was simply responding to a question ('how would you like to play Xena in a movie?' or similar) rather than stating a movie was on the way. But then this sort of thing has been happening at least since The Deliverer (see Steve Sears article in Whoosh 11 for example). cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Laurence Fishburne was on The Daily Show last night, and he corrected Jon Stewart, who also was under the impression that it's a prequel. That made me feel better, since somewhere along the way I know I read that the two follow-up movies were going to be a prequel and then a sequel! I wasn't just hallucinating again. :) It's all a moot point with me, since I'm not a _Matrix_ fan and don't plan to see either follow-up. But we do want to keep our facts straight. :) Meredith meth@smoe.org Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. What has my attention is the assertion that Gabby wrote the scrolls to Xena's advantage. While this may be true, I think there is another consideration. To Kahina, Xena was a legend. It seems to me that when a person passes into legend and so becomes larger than life, we (a collective, social 'we') start reshaping the story to suit the image we have or wish to have. I think this very true. Kahina believed Xena was going to solve all her problems. She would lead them into battle and overcome all obstacles. She certainly saw Gabrielle as an adjunct to this. It must have come as a terrible shock that the famed Battlin' Bard could kill in error and that the noble Warrior Princess would lie to protect her. She never quite understood there were real and therefore flawed people in the legend. "One clear example, to me, is that of Albert Einstein. Contrary to legend (which legend was already active in his own time), he was either a poor student nor particularly absent-minded. He was, in fact, very well rooted in every-day reality; this contributed to his being one of the scientists advising Roosevelt to go ahead with the A-bomb project. In addition, recall that Einstein had been a patent clerk -- examiner, in our terms. He was quite at home separating the meaningful from the fallacious. Indeed, he had a few practical patents to his own name." Of course there are many more cases of the legend being more attractive than the reality. We like to think of Lincoln as a poor lawyer when in fact he was quite successful just look at his house in Springfield - its the house of a wealthy man. Look at the Alamo - we all love the idea that every defender was killed in battle yet we now have evidence some surrendered and were executed among them Davy Crocket. The fact is that the reality certainly isn't bad it's just not as attractive. My favorite myth is the John Wayne one. We have built him up as the essential American hero - cowboy and soldier. The truth is he was a Stanford football player named Myron Morrison who was a 4-F because of football injuries. The reality isn't bad but we like the legend better. "My point is fairly direct here. I winder how much Gabby left out of the scrolls -- and how much Kahina chose to either ignore or interpret in some more benign way than which it had been intended. It is hard for me to imagine telling much of any story about Xena without it becoming clear that to get between her and those important to her would be a risky undertaking, at very best." I'm sure Gabby made some judicious cuts here and there simply because Xena is a hero in her own eyes. She may have painted her as more noble than she was. However Kahina knows of her history with Rome and therefore she knows how ruthless Xena can be. I'm sure thee also must have been some hint of the devotion between Xena and Gabrielle so it should not have come as a surprised that Xena would not sit by and allow Gabrielle to be executed. Has anyone seen the promos for the movies Daredevil with Jennefer Garner fighting with the sais while dressed in black leather. I never saw sais in my life until Gabby used them now they have popped up in The Mummy Returns and now Daredevil. Do you think someone might have been watcing Xena? 2. Andromeda and Mutant-X have been renwed. Tribune says they are ratings successes. I popped went over to Zap2it to see their rating and they weren't even in the top 20. They are apparently a success without the ratings that even Xena had when its studio felt the show was faltering. 3. Finally the runor is Buffy will not be back. Also that UPN wants only surfire ratings successes and that Enterprise will not be back also because of lack luster ratings. Looking at UPNs ratings generally I would say that next season the UPN stations will be showing dead air. Does UPN have any successful shows?
