More importantly it is here that we discover that finding Gurkhan will not be easy since three different men pose as Gurkhan. As Virgil becomes more confused and Xena more aware of her predicament , >> Here is where I had the problem - who was trying to fool whom? OK, I can understand if Gurkhan was paranoid about assassins and wanted people outside his harem not to know what he looked like. However, what was the point of trying to pretend within his harem? He would make himself known several times a day. The harem would be a small enclosed community and it would be impossible to keep secrets. As soon as one person was chosen to "spend time" with him, they would describe him to others. I also think it would fit in with the meglomaniac "pray you die quickly" image if everyone knew who he was. Anyone who committed the acts he did, must have had an amazing arrogance. I can't see him hiding behind anonymity. It would also fit better with the "mighty ruler" image if he sent an emissary to slave markets rather than go himself - get someone else to do the hard work. However, it would explain why the guards sent to behead Sarah didn't recognise him. However they must have had a major lapse of eyesight not to be able to tell the difference between a dark male and a blonde female. This episode felt like there was someting missing from it. The title suggests that the identity mystery would be the central issue of the plot, but it proved to be almost an irrelevance. >> The third scene, which is very impressive, is Xena's torture. Her beating is perhaps the most brutal scene of the series or perhaps in any TV series with a PG rating. >> I am sure the fight in The WAy when Xena lost het arms was worse. The shocking nature of the beating in Who's G was the lenght of it. In The Way it was the intense savagery. Cutting off arms, hands and heads. (Come to think of it, was The Way a PG?) They therefore often remained unmarried, a big disadvantage in Vientamese society. The article said --- Vietnam has a long history of women warriors. Two of the country's most revered heroes are the Truong sisters, Trac and Nhi, who led an insurrection against China in 40 A.D. and liberated Vietnam. One of their commanders, Phung Thi Chinh, is said to have given birth during battle and to have continued fighting with her infant strapped to her back. Another women, Trieu Au, rode an elephant into battle against the Chinese in A.D. 248, leading a force of 3,000. Defeated in battle, she committed suicide at the age of 23. In the 1950s, nearly a million female guerillas took part in the war against colonial French forces, military historians estimate. In the conflict with the United States, 40 per cent of the Viet Cong's regional commanders were women. One of them, Nguyen Thi Dinh, held the rank of general. Hundreds of thousands of women, most of them young and single, served in combat zones during the war. They operated anti-aircraft guns, built roads under frequent bombardment and went on patrols in units with men. "We lived and slept together but did not touch," said a woman in the 559 Brigade, who attributed the restraint to cultural conservatism. "I don't know of a single pregnancy in our unit. We thristed for love, but only in our hearts." Boeotian ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I didn't recognize him at first, but I was able to place Eli's voice immediately. :) He played the lawyer of the latest murder-victim-of-the-week. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Holly Figueroa, 1/26/03 ============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
