Sam has shares in Renaissance Pictures, but that's all. He prefers to concentrate on movies and leave all the TV series to Rob Tapert. Still, as you say, the distributors must have figured Sam's name would sell more copies. What do Japanese audiences think of Friend in Need? Will it worry them that Rob Tapert has got some details wrong? (I'm sure he must have changed some things from Japanese tradition). It should be just a simple gimmicky episode to drop Xena and Gabrielle in the deep freeze for 25 years and to get Eve grown up. Instead we have a fine action packed adventure and wonderful performances by LL, KS, Paris Jefferson and astonishingly enough by Ted Raimi. The story opens in the future Joxer is an old middle aged man drinking in a tavern when he hears that a peddle has a scroll for sale. Not any scroll but the last scroll of the Bard of Potedia (note to gabscoffers - see she's famous and well-known as an author). Joxer spends all his wife's (Meg) money on the scroll. In the barn with his children he reads the scroll. Xena is fed up with being chased by all the gods in Olympus and goes to see the Fates for a few answers. The Fates inform her that only after Xena has tasted the "essence of death" can the twilight begin and Eve be free from the gods. Gabrielle is appalled at the prophecy but Xena sees an opportunity. As they leave the temple they are once again attacked by Hades and Athena (obvious this scene was suppose to precede the Fates scene since X & G are sporting wounds at the Fate's Temple that are received in this battle - Gabby took a little literary license here). During the battle Gabrielle shout to Xena to give her Eve but Xena won't - Athena taunts her with the fact that she no longer even trusts Gabrielle to protect Eve. X & G finally fight off the Hades and Athena by destroying Hades Helm of Invisibility. This was nice touch - symbolic of the gods losing their powers as they try to defy fate. Xena and Gabrielle with Eve are now hiding out with Octavius who is now their ally. As Xena treats her and Gabrielle's wounds with a medicine that can kill both infection and people (probably iodine?) they discuss Athena's accusation that Xena doesn't trust Gabrielle with Eve. Xena says it isn't true that Eve was in just as much danger with her as with Gabby. The time however has come to stop running and confront the gods. Meanwhile back on Olympus Athena wants answers and she wants them from Celeste, the goddess of death. Why isn't Xena dead? Celeste will not be bullied - Xena will not be taken before her time. As the astonished godly court watches, two stronger willed goddess go at. Athena - your live is just as much in danger as ours. Celeste - where's there life there will always be death. Athena - so you think you are immune : "death is getting a little cocky". Celeste is unimpressed with Athena's words. Meanwhile Xena has decided to go the offensive. She confronts Hephestus in his forge (Hephestus is played by the Young Hercules Hephestus and not the old Hercules Hephestus for some unknown reason). As she watched Heph at his anvil she asks if he is the "god of arts and crafts what are his hobbies". "Trying to kill you so I can kill your daughter" he answers. Xena is not pleased and snarls back: "no that's a perversion". The two begin to fight - a fight Xena is losing so badly that Celeste appears in order to collect Xena's soul. Just as Heph is about to strike the killing blow Gabrielle whips Heph's hammer out of his hand and beings to fight him. Xena scrambles out of the way and using the chains of Hephestus she captures Death. She and Gabrielle defeat Hephestus and make their escape with the help of Octavius. On Olympus Athena and Ares are having a very unfriendly chat. Athena is recounting Ares short-comings. He killed Eli who was loved by the people this resulted in a revolt against the god - a revolt that Xena used to her advantaged in Amphipolis. With each accusation Athena advances on Ares lounging on her throne. Finally she come nose to nose with him violating his very personal space and snarls at him - a revolt in in which Ares took Xena's side. Ares is in a very vulnerable position but luckily Hades interrupts with the bad news - his sister has been captured by Xena. Xena, Gabrielle, and Eve with the captive Celeste have made camp for the night. Celeste chained cannot hold her candle and when the candle goes out Death will die. Celeste asks Xena why she has done this - doesn't she know that the world will suffer without her. Xena has rescued her before why has she turned on her. Xena now bitterly denounces Death - death doesn't end suffering only cause more suffering. She is at the beck and call of every murderer and warlord. Solon was taken because someone decided it was his time and his suffering continued after his death. Marcus and her beloved brother Lycius - the first to accept her and love her unconditionally - were taken before their time. Standing next to Gabrielle and holding Eve she says she won't lose any more family. Gabrielle however tells Xena that Celeste as an immortal can't understand grief. Celeste says he does understand she too has a beloved brother and she weeps. Xena gently wipes Celeste tears. Celeste says that even if she is dead it won't stop the gods - Gabrielle agrees they will only make the innocent suffer. Innocent suffer - the two women realize they have forgotten someone. At a tavern Joxer is partaking of a particularly good ale when Gabrielle arrives. She tries to get Joxer to go with her but who should arrive but Hades and Athenia with her archers. Hades attacks Gabrielle but Athena reminds him that she is no good to them dead - they need her to get Celeste back. Joxer however rises to Gabrielle defense unfortunately calling Athena "goldy pants" sets Athena off and Joxer is nearly throttled. In order to save Joxer Gabrielle reveals Xena's whereabouts. That morning at Xena's camp Celeste is visibly weakening. Xena is about to leave when Athena shows up with Gabrielle and she is traded for Celeste. Ares suddenly shows up sitting on the wagon - he tells Xena,Gabrielle and Eve to climb aboard and the chase is on. Xena soon dumps Ares telling him that she doesn't want his help. On a cliff near the sea Xena with Gabrielle writing furiously on her scroll are being bombarded by Athena, Hades, and Hephestas. The two women fight off Athena's warriors but are no match for the three gods. Their combined power finally hurls the wagon with Xena, Gabrielle, and Eve off the cliff. Xena awakens on the beach. The wagon with Eve in it is in flames, and Gabrielle lies dead in the sand next to her. As Xena screams out her rage and defiance she prepares to fall on her sword but is stopped by Ares. Ares asks her not to do this but Xena says it's a package deal and taking out a vial that looks like the one that had the medicine in it drinks and dies. Athena with a satisfied smirk on her face is convinced she has won. The only human witness to these events is Joxer. As he watches in numbed disbelief, he witnesses Ares take Gabrielle and the Xena off somewhere. Octavius arrives and Joxer telles him the bad news that Xena, Eve, and Gabrielle are dead. No says Octavius they aren't dead - he has Eve she was switched that night at Xena's camp that night. All that has happened has been a elaborate trick. Xena captured Celeste not to kill her but just so she could get her tears. Remember the Fates said that Xena must taste the essence of death so if she and Gabrielle drank Celeste tears (yuck) they would appear dead but would not actually die. Gabrielle was captured on purpose so that Celeste could be freed and so that Athena would chase the three. Xena figured Athena would be certain that Xena would never be separated from Eve so she would be convinced that the baby was in the wagon when it went off the cliff. In the frantic moments before the wagon was thrown off the cliff Gabrielle drank the tears and was cradled by Xena as they feel to the sea below. Then Xena drank the tears. The gods would think them dead and they could live without fear. Joxer says all went according to plan except that Ares has taken their bodies. In an ice cave Ares gently lays Xena to rest in an ice coffin next to Gabrielle. Ares now admits that he has handled her all wrong and that Gabrielle had the true key to her soul - unselfish and undemanding love. However he still had a piece of her soul. Yes when she was self-sacrificing she did belong to Gabrielle but when she "kicked ass" she was his. With a kiss farewell he bids farewell to Xena and leaves her to rest for eternity with her soulmate - or so he thinks. Great episode. Theresa Healey played Celeste with compassion, dignity and with a bit of mystery. This is the goddess who truly empathizes with mankind and in the end when she is let go by Xena you are left wondering just how much she has guessed about Xena's real plans. Paris Jefferson's Athena is no longer masquerading as the compassionate god she is now as ruthless and arrogant as her father Zeus. Kevin Smith is just wonderful in his farewell scene to Xena - the god is now a man who can see his errors and how he failed to win the woman he loved. Lucy was great in her confrontation with Death - although part of a ploy she brought out the truth behind Xena's words - the anger that Xena surly has at seeing so many unjust deaths. Ted Raimi's old Joxer is just a wonderful creation - a man who has a family and beloved children but is still grieving for his friends. One note to cr see Gabrielle follows orders very well, saves Xena in the neck of time, and is a famous bard - - what more could we want in an episode. Oh there are a few YAXIs here. In Death In Chains wasn't it a rule that no one can touch Death yet in this episode both Xena and Gabrielle touch Celeste - - the rule apparently changed now just her hands are lethal. Also if Xena's plan had succeeded wouldn't Celeste know Xena wasn't dead (I"I'm note sure about Gabrielle because she is an Amazon and not subject to Hades). At the end Xena was going to fall on her sword how was she going to drink poison instead if Ares hadn't shown up to stop her. Next up Xena and Gabrielle defrost and Livia demonstrates why the birth control pill is so popular. Yes, I was curious about that too -- especially that big explosion. I've read that the Japanese are used to big "fireworks" in their action films, that they wouldn't be offended by the similarity of the mushroom cloud in Friend In Need with the bombs dropped there in World War II. But from what Katsunori Shimada posted, it seems only a few Xena fans will see the finale anyway. This is the woman who pranced around as Autolycus' concubine "Cherish" and never hesitated to use her body as a weapon of seduction. It took me awhile to realize that I had more concern about Xena's pride and reputation than Xenastaff did. I often flinched at Lucy's "unXenalike" expressions and mannerisms, or at some of the unseemly situations they put Xena in. But the character, as you say, was who she was because of her focus on her "mission" and willingness to do whatever it took, in circumstances anybody else would avoid. Whatever pride she had was in succeeding, in doing that as honorably as she could -- without worrying about how silly, stupid, servile, unattractive, incompetent, impolite, or "cold" she seemed. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
