Not quite as well filmed as Michael Hurst's effort I thought. But they did play the title credits at that point - plus some cutting back to the torture scene - and of course there were the obligatory naked women prancing around (flame and ice silhouettes) while Madge wailed the theme. So - naked women and torture.... you COULD take offense if you forgot you were watching a Bond film - sex and sadism are long established themes in the books and the films. But your friends need to watch more XWP to really appreciate a well-written, directed and acted violent torture scene! >>Third, the action/martial arts sequences were very fast-paced and many of >>the moves were reminiscent of XWP (Halle Berry's character does several >>flips/kicks/jumps just like Xena), though if it had truly been a Xena >>movie, Xena woulda been kicking *a** with the guys, and not been >>relegated to a girl-girl fight like Halle Berry was at the end. > >Still, though, that's progress. Bond girls used to be good for nothing >but getting Bond's rocks off, and giving him a damsel in distress to rescue. First - what's "relegated" about a girl-girl fight!? Have we learnt nothing from XWP? Callisto, Alti, Najara et al are turning in fictional graves. It was strictly first banana hero vs first banana villain and second banana hero vs second banana villain. The question should be - when is a female James Bond style franchise going to get established?? Secondly - nearly every film has had a substantial female villain as well as a damsel in distress and sex bunny. Sometimes the boundaries have blurred. Jinx was okay - except of course there was no unresolved sexual tension between her and Bond. Still Michelle Yeoh is the high-point of Bond characters for me. No, I don't think that's really new. Ever since Dr No, the very first Bond movie, they've poked a bit of fun at themselves. I recall one early movie (was it Goldfinger? - can't remember) that starts with a seagull floating on the water, which then rises to show that it's a dummy perched on a frogman's head, he climbs out of the water, unzips his wetsuit (well, must be a drysuit, actually) and James Bond climbs out in full immaculate dinner jacket complete with a carnation in his buttonhole. If that isn't self-mocking, what is? ;) > All in all, a *great* movie, and Brosnan finally comes into his own as > Bond (the first few Bond movies he looked a bit nervous to be taking on > the "mantle", but now he seems relaxed and into it), and I highly > recommend it for anyone who's got XWS now as I do. ;=) Well, he was alsways better than Roger Moore, IMO. Just when R. Moore had got old enough, and enough lines on his face, to start to be halfway convincing, they replaced him. Sean Connery, OTOH, was perfect from the very first. I did think the Bond movie with Michelle Yeoh (was that Tomorrow Never Dies?) was pretty good, mostly thanks to the aforementioned Ms Yeoh ;) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. There's a difference between a film with a sequel (does TR have a sequel) and the Bond franchise with 20 films and 5 different actors in the eponymous role. Superman also has a bunch of TV and film incarnations. The preview of Charlie's Angels looked like a lot of fun - but will it turn into an ongoing thing? I hope so - the premise lends itself to it. Lucy has considered who could play Xena in a film - if not her within 2 years! - and suggested she might "play the mother". I look forward to see who else they could cast in the role - it might not be the Xena I love now, but it would be good to see it make the jump from cult icon to cultural icon. I mean, there is much more scope for complexity in Xena than in James. He never seems to develop as a character - maybe that is what makes a successful franchise - each event is complete in itself. No wonder Rob tried to avoid the storylines - what are they called? serial? Until the success of those stories raised XWP into the realms of (sometimes) art. Those are the story-lines I loved anyway. I thought of it in the vein of A Day In The Life - no big plot points here just a glimpse of what life would be like if Xena and Gabrielle would settle down with the Amazons. Josh Becker did a fairly good job directing until he lost control of Lucy and the script at the very end and we ended a very amusing comedy with too much slap stick. The story opens with the Northern Amazons taking a swim and our three main Amazons - Rhea, a young Amazon who is entranced with Eve, Eris who is entranced with Xena, and Cyane who is entranced with herself, discussing the possibility that Gabrielle and Xena will stay with the tribe. Much to Cyane's displeasure the two young Amazons want Gabrielle to stay on as queen and Xena and Eve to be part of the tribe. It seems the trio has captured the hearts of the Amazons. The idyllic swim is interrupted when an intruder is spotted and apprehended by wet angry Amazons. Back at the village Xena is building a swing for Eve. Gabrielle is very happy she says that Xena is nesting even though Xena scoffs at the idea. Gabrielle however has some starling news for WP, she would like to stay on with the Amazons. She has found the couple a nice fixer-upper and wants to settle down with Xena and Eve. It is plain to see that Xena is surprised and looks a little like a deer caught in headlights at this proposal. She is saved when the Amazons bring in their captured peeping Tom - Joxer. Although Cyane is incensed by Joker's voyeurism none of the other Amazons seem too upset and it is obvious that Gabby and Xena aren't too concerned until it is learned that Joxer has forgotten Xena's letter from Cleopatra and Joxer is sent to the stocks (Xena's board from Chin gets another guest appearance as the stock). As Joxer is lead off, Gabrielle leads Xena off describing her plans for their new home. Joxer however is more trouble than he or Gabrielle know. Gabrielle is ready to release Joxer from the stocks when she informed by Cyane that the punishment for spying on naked Amazons is blinding. Gabrielle and Joxer are shocked but Gabby is determined to figure a way out of this predicament. Meanwhile Joxer is back in the stock being taunted by Amazon children. Joxer has also caught the attention of Rhea a young Amazon who wants a baby and Joxer now has become her candidate as father - as she points out it's tough to meet guys as an Amazon. Back at the cabin Xena is having her own problems with impressionable Amazons. Xena has discussed with Eve the possibility of staying with the Amazon - there a plenty of reasons to stay Gabrielle would be a good queen, it would be a great place to raise Eve and she would be safe from the Greek gods here. This one sided conversation is interrupted by Eris who has come to apply for the job of Xena's sidekick. She shows off her many skills - she can job, kick and has a war cry. Xena, however, has been charged by Gabrielle to clean up the place tests Eris cleaning skills. As Eris cleans, Xena whittles and nonchalantly saves Eve from the campfire. Eris finished cleaning says how this would make a great Amazon home - Xena under her breathe replies "yeah, if I was an Amazon". Meanwhile Xena and Gabrielle have a little confab with the Amazons in the sweat hut. This is a good scene. The younger Amazons are picking the brains of the two older and more experienced women about sex. When they ask Xena and Gabrielle about men Gabrielle defers to the more experienced member of the partnership - Xena. Xena is not too encouraging she says sometimes you get Greek Fire and sometimes you get diddly. Rheas thinks that agood lover should be kind and gentle - Xena vehemently disagrees while Gabrielle dreamily concurs. Xena and Gabrielle exchange a nice variety of smirks and knowing looks through out this scene. Gabrielle at this time also decides to let the tribe know that she and Xena are seriously considering staying with the tribe. This appears to be news to Xena but the all the Amazons save Cyane are thrilled and rush off to prepare for the coronation. The next morning Xena and Gabrielle are awaken by a very loud Ram's horn. Gabby explains to a bemused Xena that the horn calls the queen to the ceremonies. Xena asks Gabrielle what she should do while she is off "Queening" Gabrielle says she could clean the place, play with Eve, or go kill something. Xena picks killing something. As Xena prepares to go hunting, Eris and her friends show up and want Xena to join their dance troop. They're are preparing for Gabby's coronation. Xena half-heartedly joins in but soon is bored. Gabrielle sees that Xena is not pleased. When the young Amazons leave Gabrielle confronts Xena. She tells Xena that she thinks she can do some good with the Amazons. Xena on the other hand says she can't stand all the communal living and she thinks she will take Eve and go fishing for a few days. I had the impression Xena was hoping that Gabrielle would give in when she threatened to leave but Gabrielle says fine go. A surprised Xena now has no choice but go. Gabrielle is now awaiting her subjects unfortunately she has dozed off on the throne. Her subjects startle her and with the odd sentence "not tonight" Gabby awakens. She is then lead off to a cave where she is covered in mud and told she must participate in a sacred Amazon ritual. After making sure no animals are to be harmed nor that she will have to drink blood, she is told she must spend the night covered in mud howling at the moon. Gabrielle is now reconsidering her role as queen. Meanwhile Joxer is still in the stocks. Rhea has made him an offer he is having trouble refusing but he is at present more worried about his eyes. Gabrielle has found loophole however. If Joxer pledges his loyalty to her she can pardon him because it was first offense. Joxer does this and is about to be pardoned when Rhea drags him off board and all for a little smooching in the supply hut. Joxer manfully resists her charms but the pair is caught by a disapproving Cyane. The two culprits are dragged before Gabrielle who has just pardoned Joxer only to discover he has committed the crime if kissing an Amazon out of season. An offense that calls for fight to the death with the queen. Meanwhile Xena is packing to go fishing with Eve. Eris pops up again - since Xena and Gabrielle are breaking up she can be the new sidekick. Xena obviously is surprised to hear that people think she and Gabrielle are actually breaking up. She gently and firmly tells Eris that she and Gabrielle are not breaking up just separating briefly to work things out. Eris is disappointed and leaves but before she does she tells Xena she has pulled some of Gabby's scrolls from the saddlebags. Xena takes the scrolls into the cabin and begins to read them to Eve (apparently Xena isn't that anxious to leave on her fishing trip). The one she chooses is the "Return of Callisto" and she begins to read. Gabrielle back at the sweat hut is upset about Joxer. She now has doubts about her ability to lead the Amazons. Xena arrives and says that Gabrielle shouldn't doubt her abilities. She has read the scrolls and anyone who can write with such compassion and wisdom will be a great queen. The pair are reconciled but Joker's fate is still to be decided. Xena says that she will handle it. The next day Gabrielle says Xena as her champion will fight Joxer. Although Cyane objects Gabrielle is adamant that is her prerogative. Joxer is elated because he assumes Xena has a plan - Rhea gloomily says she knows what the plan is , Xena plans to kill him. At the appointed time the tribes meets in an area that looks suspiciously like a wrestling ring. Gabrielle introduces her champion, Xena, The Warrior Princess, and settles back with mug of ale to watch the fight. Xena asks what the rules are and Cyane says that it is to the death. Joxer is brought to the ring. Xena, making sure she puts on a good show, struts around like a WWF wrestle as does Joxer. The fight commences with a lot pratfalls and standard pro wrestler action until Joxer gets ticked off and actually punches Xena. Xena then ends it she puts Joxer and puts the pinch on him.. She then says he has cut off the flow of blood to his brain, Cyane says that is not geed enough she is still moving. "Quit right" says Xena and she paralyzes Joxer. Eris now raises her hand and to Gabby's dismay announces she can still see him breathing. So Xena stops his breathing. Cyane feels Joker's chest and says his heart is still beating so Xena stops that too. Cyane happily announces that Joxer is dead. Xena thereupon undoes all the various pinches and Joxer is alive again. Cyane protests but Xena says there is nothing in the law that says the condemned has to stay dead. Gabrielle now says that the laws are too strict. That they should be tempered with mercy. No one should die or be banished for a kiss. Eris pips up that no one should also be blinded for getting an eye full of naked Amazons. Cyane is suitably chastised and although she only wished to uphold Amazon traditions she realizes she was wrong and asks permission to leave the tribe. Gabrielle denies her permission and instead says that Cyane loves the tribe and will have to stay and lead the tribe since she is leaving with Xena. That night as Joxer sleeps Xena and Gabrielle talk about their stay with the Amazons. Xena wants to know if Gabrielle has regrets. Gabby says no - she thinks Cyane will look better in mud and antlers than she did. So she asks where to next. Xena says Egypt and the camel races in Alexandria. There are good performances here. Joy Van Uden brings an innocence to the role of Rhea that saves it from becoming one big sex joke. Morgan Reese Fairhead is subtly enthusiastic as Xena's wannabe sidekick and perpetual virgin (she will appear latter as Cyane in To Helicon and Back - I was hoping at some point she would have said she was Eris's daughter). ROC give a nicely understated performances dealing with the young Amazon's with bemused affection (she had some nice pieces of business her - the dozing Gabby and the Amazon Queen dusting her throne were nice touches). Lucy does a nice grumpy Xena with a couple very subtle touches especially in the scene with Gabrielle as she announces she is going fishing. She registered a nice sense of surprise and regret when Gabrielle said she go if she wanted. Ted also did a nice job as Joxer warred with his libido and morality with morality winning in the end. The direction was on the whole good. Josh Becker did a good job in the sweat hut and with very funny scene of Gabrielle braying at the moon. I think however he likes Stooge humor a little too muck. Did we need two scenes of Joxer being pelted with mud by the Amazon kids or two scenes of Gabby twisting Joker's nose. Also I though the WWF wrestling scene went way too far Lucy loves to ham it up but Becker should have reined her in a little. I just couldn't see Xena being that silly. I also had some reservations about Xena's character here. Xena actually got on my nerves a bit. Gabrielle had good idea about staying with Amazons - Eve would have been safe there. Xena rejects this apparently because she was bored and perhaps a little miffed that Gabrielle would be "Queening" all day and wouldn't have time for her. I don't think Xena is that selfish that she would put her own comfort above her daughters well being. Gabrielle must be given credit that at some point during Livia or Eve she never told Xena that things would have been better if they had stayed with the Amazons like see wanted. Also for a season that was criticized as denying subtext, this was one of the most subtexty episodes. Xena and Gabrielle acted like a couple. They talked about settling down, and raising a child together. They behave like a married couple even breaking up briefly to work things out. The couple is off to Egypt and Antony and Cleopatra is up next. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Maybe the main feature will be whatever dramatic piece LL&ROC come up with, perhaps with some comments about what it was like for them coming to a con after some distance from the show. I'd think they'd feel a combination of freedom from some expectations, but more pressure to be entertaining as themselves. This con DVD could also include some of the other actors, whom I'm assuming might answer questions on stage. I'd be interested in fan reactions too, to get a flavor of what it was like to attend. At any rate, I'm looking forward to the variety we could see on the next con DVD. I'm not even worrying this time about getting the video version as well. Heh, I got a better computer and on the internet, bought a VCR and recently a DVD player all because of XWP. I've got plenty of use out of everything now but the DVD player, for which I have two DVD's -- AFIN and Last Dance. I actually found the silliness in the wrestling scene more palatable than the Three Stooges bits in FURIES, even tho Xena was supposed to be "out of her head" then. Frankly, I thought her "they'll want a good show" in KINDRED went along well with her generally mixed emotions about the Amazons and some of their traditions. Her over-the-top performance underscored her opinion about the nonsensical rules and form of "justice." Perhaps that's also why I could understand Xena's reluctance to subject herself to "communal living" with the Amazons. As I recall, Gabs was the one who saw all the benefits for Eve. The one good reason Xena gave was lots of babysitters. I don't know that she saw bringing Eve up there as such a great idea, so much as knowing that Eve could have a home with the Amazons in the future. I actually liked that Xena was forced to think about Gabrielle's needs for a change, without succumbing to her usual first instinct to decide that it meant they must be separated (ala CRUSADER). This time Xena searches her soul and unselfishly chooses to support Gabrielle by staying with her. True, Xena was mighty happy when Gabrielle decided to leave, but at least she was willing to give it a try. BTW, I thought this ep was one of the biggest nods to fanfic, in terms of having X&G discuss settling down and raising a child, with Gabs as queen and Xena teaching the Amazons her many skills. It convinced me that the idea should stay in fanfic, as the diaper changing was cute the first time, but I had my teeth clenched through most of the time Eve was tagging along with them at any age. :-) - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
