I found it very hard to follow the Amazon High story (from the clips in Lifeblood) on first acquaintance. After I'd watched a couple of times, it became clearer. What I did notice, reading your account of the 'real thing', for which many thanks, was that some of the clips in Lifeblood were out of order. This was quite legitimate I guess, since Lifeblood was telling its own story and didn't need to be exactly follow the Amazon High plot. > The biggest drawback of the episode is that it is basically a throw away > episode (it never was even shown as a rerun). 'Who was the most evil Amazon of all?' or suchlike. How many people would answer 'Velasca' and never think of Eve or Alti? ;) > and the fact the Xena realizes the need for her child to a stable > structure to her life. I think the clips were chosen mainly to illustrate the Lifeblood story, irrespective of their significance in the Amazon High story. Some of the AH plot survived, but in modified form. > As a history major I however liked the theme that history is often > distorted to support our own view point. Interesting that Cyane and Karina's enlightened leadership was forgotten and counted for naught in centuries to come, while Samsara whose approach was discredited at the time, was the one whose legend survived. I wonder if, in Japan in later years, the story would be told of how the evil invader Xena was killed by the heroic spirit of the murdered Lord Yodoshi, who had kept the 40,000 souls safe from her clutches .... ;-) > The > revelation of the true history and it acceptance as the truth changes the > culture again. It is very unfortunate that some people can't get over the past (or what they view as the past). I guess we could cite Northern Ireland as another example... cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Talk about a guy in a rubber suit.... :( Not sure how much O&K had to do with that one, actually. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Having already purchased the VHS version, I have to admit to some disappointment in the extras. Yes, it was great getting the bits of Lucy singing and Renee doing her "rap," even though the quality of sound and video was naturally not so great. But I was expecting more in terms of the additional interviews. Turns out that most of the interviews with LL and ROC at the end repeated much of what was already intersperced throughout the grrls' stage appearance. So, if you too already purchased Last Dance on VHS and don't have the dinars for the DVD, you won't be missing that much beyond the usual benefits of DVD. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I guess we could cite Northern Ireland as another example..." Yes indeed. Some people or cultures are trapped by their history. Americans on the other hand suffer from historical amensia and are woefully ignorant about our history ( a recent poll demonstrated that a startingly large per centage of Americans didn't know when the Civil War was fought). It's a wonder how we can expect a democracy to work when we have so little connection to our past. I mentioned the immigration of Latinos into this country and the arguments against them is (1) they take jobs from Americans, (2) they are burden on our welfare (charitable institutions), (3) have a high incidence of criminal behavior. This has been true of every immigrant population - it was true of the Irish of the mid 1800'sand theEastern and Southern European immigrations of the late 1800's early 1900s. Immigrants do take low paying jobs, do relie heavily on charity and because a large number of them are usually young single males, they do exhibit criminal behavior. Eventually they settle down, get better paying jobs, go off welfare and get older and they adapt to America. My grandfather was a Slovak immigrant and my mother who is 84 can tell stories of him and his compatriots that is rife with drinking, fighting and law breaking that is mind-boogling, yet this same generation raised young men and women who survived the Depression, fought WW 2, and made this country one of the prosperous on earth. They did a good job despite many who feared that they would destroy American culter. All immigrants change American culture and America changes them. It is the way it has always been - if we had a better understanding of our own history we would have a more balanced view of immigration. End of lecture for today. Young" Subject: [chakram-refugees] OT: Die Another Day--SPOILERS (somewhat) I just got back from the new Bond movie, Die Another Day, and I must say it was far more of a Xena fix than I thought it would be. ;=) First, the Bond character *finally* goes dark, and has to fight against a frame-up against him, plus endure some very Xena-esque torture reminiscent of The Gauntlet at the hands of the NKoreans in a prison for supposedly 14 mos. (he was in far too good shape at the end for me to believe that, but we really can't have an out-of-shape Bond, now can we? ;P ). Second, the writing was *so d*mn funny* and tongue-in-cheek and self-mocking, just like Xena (sometimes I was guffawing so loudly I think my seat neighbors wanted to have me hauled outta there! ;) ), I hadda wonder if a XWP writer had been involved in the project in some way (I couldn't stay for the end credits like I usually do because the *d*mn* thing was 2:15 hrs. and I hadda run to the bathroom at the end *really fast*! ;) )? Third, the action/martial arts sequences were very fast-paced and many of the moves were reminiscent of XWP (Halle Berry's character does several flips/kicks/jumps just like Xena), though if it had truly been a Xena movie, Xena woulda been kicking *a** with the guys, and not been relegated to a girl-girl fight like Halle Berry was at the end. Lotsa acrobatics/wire techniques as far as I could see, and lotsa FX. ;=) All in all, a *great* movie, and Brosnan finally comes into his own as Bond (the first few Bond movies he looked a bit nervous to be taking on the "mantle", but now he seems relaxed and into it), and I highly recommend it for anyone who's got XWS now as I do. ;=) Just MO, ;) - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ...
