It is an interesting character study of Xena, Ares, Gabrielle, and Joxer. The plot is fairly simple. Xena, Gabrielle, and baby Eve are chased by a god sent tornado (excellent action scene) into a cave pointed out to them by a mysterious figure. At the cave they meet up with Joxer who has what appear to be three magi with him who want to honor Eve (this scene was very clever and effective in fooling the audience). The magi turn out to be assassins sent by the priests of Artemus, Poseidon and Apollo. A fight ensures and Joxer is wounded trying to protect Gabrielle but the assassins are defeated. As a disgruntled Gabby is sent off to treat Joxer's wound, Aries appears and declares his love for Xena and offers his protection. Xena however is more interested in the fact that Apollo's assassin has a poisoned sword and goes off to find wounded Joxer. Xena believes Joxer has been poisoned and sends a very reluctant Gabrielle off with him to find the mandrake tree which produces the antitoxin. As Joxer and Gabrielle go off on the horses, Xena trails behind on foot with Eve. On their trips both women will have to deal with two very different love sick suitors. Xena now with baby Eve must deal with Ares. Xena is faced with a very difficult situation, she is being pursued by three temple armies and Ares. The armies want to kill her baby but Ares wants more. Ares wants Xena and he offers her protection for her and Eve - more than that he offers to be father to Eve. In exchange Xena only has to give him his chance at immortality by bearing his child. Although Xena rejects the offer that night Xena has a very erotic dream - Ares comes to her and saves Eve and makes passionate love to her. Xena awakens shaken to her very core. Lucy is very funny as the horny Xena. Trying to convince herself that a dream is just a dream and there is no truth to it. Of course however there is a powerful truth here. Xena is very attracted to Ares. He has a real seductive power over her but Xena is no fool - this man who tormented her and her loved ones for years suddenly does not become a loving father and husband. She knows that to give herself to Ares would bind her and Eve to his violent world forever. As she so distinctly puts it she would trade her and her child's future for security and put herself at Ares's mercy forever. She doesn't trust Ares enough to make that bargain. Indeed Ares himself makes some major errors in his campaign of seduction. Yes he has a powerful seductive power but he can not resist the use of force. What is so seductive about the dream is not only the sex but his concern for Eve and Xena. In the real world Ares is not as clever. When Ares meets up again with Xena at the mandrake tree he tries to force Xena to accept him. He uses the threat of death to Joxer, Gabrielle and Eve to make Xena accept his proposition. He should know that no one can force Xena into anything and what is more he shows her what her future with him would be like - he would always hold those she loves over her head to get his way. Ares however does have a learning curve at a crucial moment in the battle between Xena and the three armies, Ares literally hold Eve's life in his hands and he doesn't use her as pawn. If he only at that moment he had helped Xena without any strings who knows if he might have been able to sway Xena a bit to his side, but he doesn't. He leaves her and Gabrielle to fight the armies. Xena is of course victorious, winning the battle with a spectacular chakram toss. Meanwhile as Xena deals with a sexy Ares, Gabrielle deals with Joxer. Joxer has indeed been poisoned and he is getting sicker and sicker as time passes. Gabrielle is annoyed with Joxer on a number of levels - she is furious that he lead the assassins right to Eve, that he got himself wounded offering her unneeded help, and that she is stuck helping him when she wants to be with Xena and Eve. Joxer on the other hand is just as annoyed at her - why can't she see that he just wants to help her just like she wants to help Xena? Gabrielle finally feels guilty about how she is treating him and declares herself a bitch. The two friends continue on their way to the mandrake tree but get lost. Obviously Gabrielle who has been traveling for 5 years with Xena is unable to tell north (this of coursed has been known to happen to experienced woodsmen in heavily forested areas but this doesn't seem to be the case here - it appears it is plot device ). They also meet up with Artemus's army lead by a really impressively mean priestess who sets them on the wrong road. These mishaps delay the couple's arrival at the mandrake tree. As Joxer becomes delirious he reveals more and more of his true feelings for Gabrielle. Gabrielle just doesn't know what to say to him. Finally he bluntly asks her why she doesn't love him. Gabrielle now must come up with an answer for a question that has no answer. Gabrielle can only say that she does love him as a friend - that the love he wants from her is just not going to happen and she is sorry. At this point Joxerfans usually declare Gabrielle a bitch. In fact Gabrielle does the best she can - she doesn't love the guy what else can she do. No one ever comes off well declaring their non-love for someone - especially if the other person is nice and kind of pathetic. Gabrielle is brave enough to say no - yes it takes a kind of bravery to break a pure heart - and free Joxer from his unrequited love. Thus Xena and Gabrielle escape the two most seductive traps known to humankind. Xena escapes the clutches of dangerous sex with a tall dark handsome guy in leather. Gabrielle escapes the more dangerous trap of pity love ( I actually blame pity love on Jerry Lewis movies where a clumsy and annoying jerk always winds up with a pretty girl with more earning potential) . More than one woman has fallen into these traps. Xena and Gabrielle however do not - that's why they are role models. Back to the episode. Lots of great stuff here -great fight scenes first in the cave and then when Xena and Gabrielle take the temple armies, a wonderfully yucky scene where Artemus's priestess pulls out a worm infested heart, and one terrific chakram toss - it deflects an arrow, kills the Artemus's priestess, careens off to kill another priest and the deflected arrow kills the third priest. Baby Eve is a wonderful character (well as much as a baby can be a character). I loved Xena's tender lullaby that segues into a fight utilizing impressively large diaper pins and a dirty diaper (germ warfare). Lucy and Kevin just sizzle on screen. ROC does a really good job in a difficult role keeping Gabrielle as sympathetic as she can while doing a dirty job. TR also does a good job at not making Joxer too pathetic so the audience does have some sympathy for the guy. Yes, Xena's little instructions to Eve about fighting and setting false trails (not to mention using whatever you have at your ... disposal ... as a weapon) were cute. But isn't this also the ep where blood gets on Eve? And Ares uses that in his argument with Xena? I thought it added at least a touch of realism, in recognition that a baby in the middle of bloodbaths wasn't exactly without ramifications, even if the fights were for good purposes. I remember wondering at the time whether the blood that got on Eve (whichever ep that happened in) would be referred to later, but apparently her young exposure to that wasn't what came back to haunt them later. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
