What would have been *really* tough would have been if someone *good* knew the secret, (let's say Lin Qi :) and Xena was faced with the choice of killing that good person or letting Khan screw the secret out of him. Now that's a peculiarly diabolical dilemma that TPTB never put Xena in. Possibly just as well, whichever she did half the fans would hate her for it. ;) > "There was a major YAXI there I think. Quite so, and of course, the tent would instantly have collapsed anyway. That plot point had as many holes in it as the tent. ;) > So a nice stiff breeze would have been better. > CherylA Agreed. What they showed was in effect a nice stiff breeze, but I seem to remember some dialogue about sucking all the air out? (Drat not having transcripts!) If so, the direction would seem to be better than the writing. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. If you like sweet stories here it is and if you are more of a ribald farce fan well it's got that to. First we have the sweet story. Daphne a little girl who has lost her mother is in a coma at Aphrodite's temple. In come Xena and Gabrielle. Xena, maternal instincts in overdrive, wishes she could change places with the child and poof Aphrodite makes it so. Unfortunately Xena's soul is in Daphne's body along with Daphne's soul. Rose McIver plays Daphne and she is terrific (she recently won an award for this episode in New Zealand). She is truly a sweet child trying to get to know her grief stricken father and to deal with the Warrior Princess inside her. Xena is wonderfully supportive as she tries to get the girl to reach out to her father and also deal with a warlord that has an old grudge against Xena. It is a hoot when Xena takes over Daphne. McIver lowers who voice and gazes stoically into space and promptly does heroic deeds. Leaping on to run away horses, beating the crap out henchmen, rescuing her father from chains using the first true skeleton key, and then defeating Theron, the warlord, in a sword fight. I imagine it was great part for any child actor to play and McIver, a frequent player in Xena and Hercules episodes, plays it with gusto. The second story concerns Gabrielle and Aphrodite trying to get Castor's and Pollex's - Zeus's twins -magic oil in order to separate Xena and Daphne. I like this story just as much. I love it when Gabrielle is portrayed as competent and resourceful. Gabrielle has one of my favorite fight scenes - while protecting Xena from Theron's thugs she fights them off with only a rope. The fight's choreography is great and it is filmed to really show off ROC's well toned body. After Gabby chases the thugs off she turns to care for Xena with justifiable pride whispers to her "I wish you could have seen that". Next Gabrielle with Aphrodite in tow try to crash the rave Castor and Pollex are giving. Stymied for a moment when they are told the party is for twins only, our odd couple reappear as Viking twins Bruna (Gabby) and Hilda (Dite). ROC and AT deserve credit for not breaking up when they do the scene with the party's doorkeeper. As Bruna and Hilda they are trying to convince the doorkeeper to let them in when the horns of their helmets lock and the helmets take on a life of their own. Finally gaining entrance to the party we find that oil wrestling is the chief form of entertainment. Gabby and Dite meet Pollex and Castor, the party's randy hosts, who in some Norse language invite the pair up to their pad for wild sex. Gabby and Dite unsure of what they said ya them and complement them on their command of their language. Of course this leads us to the most famous double entendres of the series when they reply that "We are cunning linguists." What sells this line is ROC and AT's reaction - Gabby is bemused and Dite just beams in anticipation. Dite and Gabby now engage C & P in an oil wrestling match (Dite: " I feel basted"). The match is very funny with Dite enjoying the more erotic aspects of the match while Gabby tries grabbing the bag that has the oil in it. Finally C & P are down and Dite inadvertently reveals that she and Gabby aren't twins. Gabby rips off her costume, makes a feminist statement and grabs the oil and runs like hell. Finally Gabby meets up with Daphne cum Xena and off they go to rescue Daphne's dad. As Daphne fights Theron, Gabby and dad fight the thugs. Another great line here is when Gabby asks the father if he can use the sai, he says "yeah to gut of fish". Gabby pointing to the onrushing thugs says: "Well think of them as really mean trout!" Gabby and dad defeat the thugs and when Dite uses the oil to separate Daphne and Xena all things turn out for the best. Dad and daughter bond and Xena and Gabby walk off into the sunset. If I have any reservations about this episode is that this would be perfect family episode if not for the sexual innuendos in the Aphrodite and Gabrielle storyline. The juxtaposition of the two very different styles is a bit jarring. Perhaps children just wouldn't understand the references and just enjoy Gabby and Dite's antics as Burna and Hilda. Also since castor and Pollex are Zeus's twins I think that makes Aphrodite their sister or niece or something so her lustful gazes directed towards them is just a bit incestuous. I guess no one thought of this. More next week. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
