The Scifi schedule says 10/4 but my TV Guide says 10/5 so I don't know if they mean early Friday or early Saturday. I thought the Western motive fun and the music was exceptionally good. I also have a soft spot for the horse centric plots and I though Argo and unnamed horse were excellent in their roles. The episode had more subplots than any other episode of Xena that I remember. First we have Talia, the sheriff of the town and Xena's old friend (it seems Xena the cruel and evil warlord once again seems to have made another loyal friend) is about to face off against her former husband who is a ruthless outlaw. Americe meets up with Armond (The Convert) and they have a spirited romance. Gabrielle also falls in love - this time with an injured horse. The plots all play out pretty well. Talia is a good sheriff and defeats her husband in a pretty exciting fight sequence. Amarice and Armond squabble well. Poor Armond find that courting an Amazon is just really hard especially when you have Joxer constantly teasing your potential girl friend. Amarice is torn between her attraction and her Amazon creed that guys are unnecessary and she doesn't deal with her confusion well. Finally after beating the crap out of a few bad guys together they make up (it seems these nothing like a nice brawl to bring two people together). Meanwhile Gabrielle is trying to bond with her rescued horse whose is proving as obstinate as Americe. Gabrielle is amusing as she tempts him with apples, limps around with a bandage to show her empathy for his injured leg, and finally asks Argo to talk to him. Finally love blossoms and her unnamed horse rescues Gabby from a bad guy. Finally Xena and Gabrielle are a two horse family. I have to say it was about time Gabby got a horse after walking all the way to India and back I'm sure she was ready for a new mode of transport. The horse however needed a name - Gabby would have surely named him (and what exactly was unnamed stallion's relationship with Argo was he the Daddy of Argo 2). The main plot was of course is Xena discovering she is pregnant. Lucy is very funny coping with narcolepsy, disgusting cravings, cute teddy bears, and sudden bouts of dry heaves. I particularly liked her explosion in the doctor's office - Lucy rants well her pronouncement that she is "a love free zone" and that she couldn't possibly be "up the Duff" was funny. I also like her confiding to Argo about her condition (she cautions Argo not let on since she wants to tell everyone) and her aside that Gabrielle "will freak". Xena's announcement made at the top her lungs as everyone is shouting about something is amusing. Gabrielle doesn't freak but she is stunned - I like the bit where Gabrielle pulls on her the collar of her coat - it shows a bit of hurt and embarrassment. After all Xena is her best friend (subtext aside) and to discover that someone you are with 24/7 secretly had an a affair without you knowing would shock anyone. Xena's assurances that she hasn't been with anyone wouldn't make Gabrielle feel any better. I'm sure Hope looms a bit in her mind and the audiences. Thus we have Xena's assurance that this baby is "good" while this seems a bit insensitive on Xena's part it does reassure the audience that we weren't about to revisit devil baby again. Gabrielle is of course a practical girl starts naming Daddies. Ares doing a god thing - rejected by Xena. Gabrielle now starts counting back when was the last time they met up with Hercules but again Xena emphatically rejects this notion. It would been funny if Gabrielle would continued on running through Eli and ending in horror with Joxer. It was interesting choice to use a comedy to introduce the pregnancy. It apparently calculated to reassure the audience that nothing bad was going to happen with the baby (Livia was written yet). I'm sure also that Lucy was happy to play a Xena that was as happy about her pregnancy as Lucy was in real life about her own. I remember liking this ep, especially since I was beginning to wonder how long we were supposed to pretend we hadn't noticed Xena was wearing new maternity duds. It was funny to discover that she and her friends were equally unaware. I'm not sure I was reassured nothing bad would happen with the baby, but it did make me feel it would be integrated somehow in a way that was more "part of life," like the way it was just part of everything else going on in that ep. Oh, and don't forget (or was that a block-out?) the continuing subplot of Joxer's affection for Gabs. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
