Welcome to the Amarice Supporters' Club I LOVE Amarice! I've been in her support club since she came in! And I LOVE Jennifer Sky as Amarice (and her other stuff I've seen too)! I liked Amarice the best when we got more of her back story ("Them Bones, Them Bones") because it also brought an explination to her former actions. My favourite scene with her was when she cut off a lock of Xena's hair and promised to carry on in her name in "Fallen Angel." I completely fell in love with her character then. :) BATTLE ON XENA! It is just a nice little four actor piece that is well- written by Steven Sears and directed with a lot of verve by Rick Jacobson. The actors are pretty good here. Kevin Smith is wonderful as Ares who is having trouble with his new girl friend and his old girl friend but may just be trolling for a another girl friend. Jenya Lano (Mavican) is no great shakes as an actress but she was sufficiently butch enough to pull off the warrior part and mammalian endowed enough to believably attract Ares attention (I have never seen so many cleavage shots in any episode of Xena as I saw in this one). Lucy does a nice job of being worried. ROC however is really good as the stunned Gabrielle who gets a new job offer from an unlikely source. I liked the fight scenes. Poor Gabrielle gets beat up a lot but she appears to give as good as she gets and does manage to finally beat the crap out the increasingly annoying Mavican. Xena of course if a always a superior warrior but I liked one part particularly. At one point Mavican whips Gabrielle around with a rope around her neck, when Xena get her chance she does exactly the same to Mavican but with the added touch of having the vine imbedded with nasty thorns - pay backs are a bitch. The most interesting point of the story is Ares clever little executive search for the job of his chosen. When Mavican applies for the job Ares's little game of pitting Xena and Gabrielle against her just seems to be a simple test and a nifty way to annoy Xena. It soon becomes obvious that he has more in mind. Observing Gabrielle's increasing skill as a warrior and her annoyance that Xena doesn't seem to recognize her growing skills, Ares decides to stake a claim to Gabrielle. Ares has rigged the game so that Xena and Gabrielle fight Mavican in the same body - Xena day shift and Gabrielle night shift. When they are not fighting they are held in a room where Xena can watch Gabrielle but Gabrielle can't see Xena. Therefore while Xena pops into the action fully cognizant what is going on, Gabrielle is always playing catch up and having to adapt to new situations. Ares is significantly impressed that he can see Gabrielle as Xena's potential success. Ares's pitch to Gabrielle is very clever. He doesn't threaten or try to overpower her. He is all reason - he now realizes that his thinking has been all wrong - he was wrong about peace through power. He has changed his philosophy what is needed now is someone who will only fight when necessary - who has the wisdom lead people into a peaceful life and Gabrielle is that woman. Yes he appreciates Gabrielle's growing talents even if Xena doesn't -a very clever appeal to Gabrielle's need for recognition. Gabrielle however is skeptical - what will happen to Mavican and Xena. Mavican is of course expendable (she was written off long ago) but Xena will live the peaceful life with mom secure in the knowledge the world is in good hands - an appeal to Gabrielle's need for Xena's approval. Then he states what she must do - Gabrielle has to kill Mavican because Mavican will surely try to kill Xena - once again a clever ploy playing on Gabrielle's protectiveness of Xena. Gabrielle in the meanwhile listens to Ares with stunned skepticism. You can see the wheels inside her head trying to figure out just exactly what Ares is up to. Does she really think Ares is serious or does she see some other scheme behind his words - ROC is very enigmatic in her reaction to the offer. Indeed what is Ares up to? Does he actually see Gabrielle as a potential successor? She wouldn't be bad - she is someone people might follow out of loyalty and could accomplish his goals without forcing people to obey. Or is this just another ploy to get Xena back? Is he hoping that Xena might be jealous of him and Gabrielle? Does he think Xena would join Gabrielle if she followed Ares out of loyalty to her? Or is he just hoping to drive a wedge between the two women? Whatever the case, it doesn't work. Gabrielle after getting the satisfaction of thumping Mavican doesn't kill her and Xena arrives who leaves Mavican hanging by a vine for all eternity or until her arm strength gives out. Other notes of interest: Mavican is bad but she has a fine appreciation of literary talent when she says she has read Gabrielle's scrolls and gives her credit for making Xena's legend live - she also thinks Gabby should write and more would she like to be her Boswell once Xena is dead. Ares upset at the ruin of Demeter's temple: What in the name.....of me is going on here? Xena 's recognition of Gabby's new skills at episodes end: Xena to Gabrielle: The next bad guy we meet will be all yours ... The next seven little bad guys will be all yours. Gabrielle: Is that a crack about my size Xena: No. The little ones are just hard for me to reach. CherylA PS: According to the last Xena newsletter ROC found herself in the same acting class as Jenya Lano this summer. I wonder if the reminisced about beating each other up. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
