Actually, I thought it was sweet of Gabby to make Amarice an honorary Amazon in Them Bones, I liked her for that, but I *really* didn't like it that the writers treated Amarice so badly in that ep. People talk of Gabby being 'misused' to suit the plot, in this case I think Amarice was misused so Gabby could show up well. (I'm not getting at Gabby here, believe it or not. Gabby the character did nothing wrong.) IMO, Amarice had shown herself more worthy to be an honorary Amazon than anyone except, possibly, Xena. And the silly old bat in the cave, if she could 'see' so much, should have known that. Actually, if they were going to go with that theme, they should have let Amarice do something daring and worthy to prove the old bat wrong, rather than just "You're not an Amazon, sod off. Gabby can have the magic goop" "OK". And maybe Gabby could then have convinced the old bat to recognise Amarice's worth. That would have done them both credit rather than making Amarice an object of Gabby's charity. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'm uneasy for the opposite reason.... I'm only too familiar with Biblical epics on TV, they're hard to avoid, I absolutely don't care for them, and didn't like seeing them creep into XWP one little bit. OK, so this theme was further developed as the series went on, and my fears that XWP was going to degenerate into a pseudo-Biblical show proved groundless, mainly due to RT's uniquely jaundiced view of the Heavenly heirarchy. > In the cosmology that Xena and Gabrielle are introduced to is not the place > we are familiar with. Callisto 'helpless in her rage' (as someone once said about Xena), defeated and probably in great pain, but still breathing defiance and hatred towards Xena. That was pathetic and yet strangely noble, there was a sort of integrity in Callisto's continuing hate. It's not surprising Angel Xena couldn't resist helping the poor tortured creature. > and Hudson is very good as the innocent angel. I thought Demon Callisto was excellent, but Demon Xena's was way overdone - as off-putting as the bunny teeth in Paradise Found, for example. For a *good* diabolical job, see Sam Sorbo's portrayal of Sin in the Herc ep Be Deviled (which I think was filmed at the same time - certainly the villain Xerxos seemed to have acquired a pair of FA wings with which he went lumbering about the scenery like an out-of-control glider, not to mention some FA horns - but I digress). Sam had no demonic make-up except a CGI'd red glow in her eyes, but her malicious amusement at Herc was totally convincing. > No Emmy > nominations for specially effect or make-up was a shame but Joe won for > dramatic underscoring (which was very effect in the scene where X & G were > taken down from the crosses). > > CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I guess if you spend all that money on demons for Xena you got use them on your other series too. As for Xena's make being over done - yeah I agree a bit. I did however like Gabby's demon - it was a strange comination of cute ugly anyway it seemed to match ROC better than Lucy's make-up. They were both "pretenders" who had the good sense to finally listen to those who could teach them something -- particularly humility. Gab was good at seeing into people's hearts, which is what she did with Amarice. I don't think she saw Gab's act as charity, so much as a genuine desire to make Amarice a part of the Amazon family she always aspired to. And Amarice showed maturity by acknowledging that she had a lot more to learn, which she would do by becoming a responsible member of the Northern tribe, rather than try to pal around with X&G as an equal. I also wouldn't have minded TPTB doing more with Amarice's potential, but I guess the actress's other obligations cut that short. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. (ROTFL!!) Interesting question indeed. Since we know the Chakram that Xena original had was the dark chakram, it maybe that it was attracted to "dark" personalities. That although it knew it belonged to Xena it could also be used against its will by another dark force. Hence when it struck Xena down in Ides it shattered by its own volition in an act of remorse. Now the new chakram could be caught not only by Xena and Gabrielle but also by Eve (Motherhood and Coming Home). Since it was a balance of light and dark it could be used by those individuals who now had that balance. Gabrielle by the end of FIN now was made up of equal parts of light and dark thus she now could use it too. The chakram of course was Xena's weapon but if we accept the premises that Xena will always be with Gabrielle the chakram is still some way still with its primary mistress. It serves mainly to introduce 5th season themes. Action Gabby now comes into her own. Sporting a new pair of leather duds and new weapons Gabby becomes a full-fledge warrior and ROC is ready to take over in the action department for Lucy as Julius gets gestated. It is just a little disconcerting to see Gabby kill without so much as twinge but it is not only necessary for the series but it makes sense for the character. Gabrielle has a new attitude - she no longer fixated on the state of her soul and she has a new commitment to and respect for Xena. I particularly liked the part where Gabrielle recognizes that Xena's darkness is a necessary if she is to fight for good. When Gabrielle tells Xena that in order to know oneself you have know the darkest part of oneself, it is now the voice of experience. Gabrielle who for most of 4th season tried to escape the darkness in herself embraces it now and uses it to defend Xena and be a true partner to her. The secondary characters also get some new plotlines. Joxer declares his love for to a disconcerted Gabrielle and of course that becomes a running them for season 5. Americe has real potential for Gabby's sidekick - I love the astonishment on her face when she watches peacenik Gabby kick butt (it reminded me of those movies from the 1940s when the boss watches his dowdy secretary whip off her glasses, take down her hair and shazzam it's Lana Turner). Kevin Smith is back as Ares after being missing for most of the 4th season and he is in rare form. I love his bathtub scene with the innocent Xena - he is doing so good until he is suddenly mesmerized by Xena's breasts. We also see just the beginning of an interest dynamic between him and Gabrielle - Ares is just starting to see Gabrielle as possibly more than that "irritating blonde". I always looked forward to the smirks that ROC and KS exchanged whenever their characters got the upper-hand over the other. Lucy does a good job as the innocent Xena. Again Lucy can bring such vulnerability to her character that she is believable as an innocent. There is a great scene where Amarice is going hunting and Xena like an enthusiastic child wants to go with her and America angrily tells her to grow-up - Lucy has such a look of hurt and embarrassment on her face that you just feel sorry for her. The other nice thing about the characterization is that innocent doesn't equate with stupid - Xena saves her friends from Kal's thugs by dropping the gate and she escapes from Kal, thus depriving us of ever finding out what scathingly brilliant plan Gabrielle had come up with (I liked Gabrielle's astonished look when she actually thought of the plan herself). The other major character is Kal, a hitherto unknown war god from "these parts". Of course we have no idea where these parts are - I assume Italy therefore was he Etruscan war god - we never find out. Nor do we ever find out why Xena lost her dark side - did Eli get the spell wrong, did Callisto play a little joke, was she manipulated by one of the war gods - we will never know. Also this episode introduces the new chakram. It will never hold the affection of the fans like the old one did (indeed Lucy kept the old one when the show was over). It was kind of nifty though - I liked that it could be broken apart and used separately, oddly enough that little twist never was used much in the show. I still wish we could have had one episode that told us how Xena got her chakram. Did Ares give it to her or did she steal it from him? I guess that goes into my file of "episodes I wish they had made". I also wanted one about how Xena got Argo, but I digress. On one hand, it seemed that, if the essence of Xena was truly absent from Demon Xena, Gabs would be okay as the bait to lure the warrior into a fate of floating around in little pieces for eternity. After all, it wouldn't be like that was the "real" Xena. Gabs knew how formidable Xena could be and that "her" Xena would want to be chopped up for the Greater Good. On the other hand, it seemed Gabrielle wasn't entirely convinced that Devil Xena couldn't be redeemed, that she wanted to make sure she could make a last-ditch effort to persuade Devil Xena if possible. I couldn't believe she would so easily offer to go along with Michael, despite her new wings. Anyway, my preference is to believe she hedged her bets by putting herself in the position to go either way. - --Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
