The funny thing is, this jumped out at me only because Sam Shaber is a musician whom I have seen perform several times, as she is part of a group of NYC singer/songwriters I have gotten to know over the years. So I had to laugh when I got to this line: "Mr. Strayton, 32, has written episodes of 'Xena, Warrior Princess', 'Cleopatra 2525' and 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys'." Amazing how the different threads of one's life can come together in a totally random fashion ... ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. In addition to the full boxes, they also have flats of just the boxes, without the cereal. I probably liked more than others her but that doesn't mean I don't see problems here. Let's start off with the good and go from there. There a basically two stories being told here and they only come together at the very end. The first is the story of Joxer, Americe and Eli rescuing Xena and Gabby' s bodies from the Romans. To settle the argument here that's been going on Caesar did order that Xena stay on the cross as an example so that is why Amarice must kill the guards to get them. Filmed in eerie blue light that makes the scene almost black and white and with DuLuca's somber music the scene where the trio take X & G down from the crosses is heartbreaking. X & G certainly look dead - - bruised ,battered and with signs of lividly already showing it is shocking to see them in such a state. When that is combined with the real grief that is exhibited by Amarice and especially Joxer you have one of the most compelling scenes in the series. From there are the supporting players get to some nice acting. Amarice, as someone else stated, acts as the audiences voice when she accuses Eli and his philosophy of getting the women killed. Although there was a lot going on behind the scenes that Amarice didn't know about there is a ring of truth in her accusation. Enough of the truth that Eli has his first real moment of self-doubt. Ted Raimi also does a very good job with Joxer - we see his very real grief and devotion to his friends - it is he that insists on their rescue and it is Joxer that knows that Xena wants to buried at home and that Gabrielle would want to beside her. Joxer may be in love with Gabrielle but he is not deluded as to where her heart is. The main story concentrates on Xena and Gabrielle's stays in heaven and hell. TPTB have decided to forgo the usual trips to Tartarus and Elysian Fields for a new realm in keeping with Tapert's ongoing theme of the emergence of a new god and the passing of the old world order of the Greek gods. Xena and Gabrielle will now be major players in this drama as the new divine powers choose them to be major players in their plans to conqueror the Greek world. This choice has been met by fans with varying degrees of enthusiasm - the primary one has been unease - Heaven, Hell, and angels are something that we as viewers who have mainly a Judeo-Christian background are familiar with and to see Tapert and company put their spin to it is unsettling. In the cosmology that Xena and Gabrielle are introduced to is not the place we are familiar with. As a children we are taught good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell and we pretty much still adhere to this concept whether we reject religion or not. Xena and Gabrielle enter a world very different than what we expect. Heaven is a bright and shiny place with kindly guardian angels but whose real power is in the hands of the decidedly militaristic Archangels led by Michael who can be kind and ruthless. Hell is indeed a place of punishment but it can unjustly imprison good people. Gabrielle captured by Callisto is turned into a demon not by any weakness or fault but by force. Gabrielle is just as forcibly saved from Hell by an army of word wielding angels. Xena act of mercy and compassion towards Callisto is not met with praise but commendation and she becomes a demon. Gabrielle becomes an archangel now and suddenly she seems to be willing to contemplate the destruction of Xena in order to save heaven and it seems wrong. This is not what we expect from heaven. Despite the unease we feel about Tapert's concept of heaven and hell there are some really interesting story-telling here. Callisto is again in fine form. As the demon Callisto, Hudson is very showy - preening like a arrogant bat as she taunts Gabrielle. ROC however is not to be outdone in the demon department - when she turns into her little demon she matches Callisto vicious with her taunt: "Tell me Callisto did you see your family burn, did you smell their burning flesh. You know I think you wanted to them dead so that you could become a BITCH" The suddenly with Xena's light Callisto becomes an angel and Hudson is very good as the innocent angel. There is lovely reconciliation scene between Gabrielle and Callisto. It is touching and both actresses appear to be genuinely moved. I really like the transformation of Callisto - Angel Callisto is deeply disturbed by violence and feels the need to save both Xena and Gabrielle from heaven and hell. I find her use of Eli to resurrect X & G very fitting. Now I know a lot of people feel that Angel Callisto was too goody goody but I think it fits Callisto's character. Callisto was never a woman with any shades of gray in her - when she was evil she was unapologetically evil she never did a good deed in her life (killing Perdicus was just an accident). It then stands to reason that when she becomes redeemed she would become the soul of goodness - it is her nature to be the extreme personification of her feelings and emotions. I thought Lucy wasn't bad as the demon Xena - a little Meg crept in there at one point but I rather enjoyed her spittle spraying speech on the rock. She had interesting interpretation of demon Xena when she was confronting Gabrielle - it was a strange mixture of determination and baffled hurt as to why Gabrielle wouldn't join her in Hell. As for those who still deny the existence of subtext in the series I wonder how the explain Xena's little "our love transcends Heaven and Hell it is an end in itself" speech. Gabrielle on the other hand is an enigma to me in her confrontation with demon Xena. Was she really working with Michael to destroy Xena or did she have plans of her own? Gabrielle just doesn't seem to be herself when talking to Michael about Xena's destruction and ROC seems to be holding something back. I suspect Gabrielle may have been trying to figure someway to get Xena back without Michael knowing what she was up to.. Other little things I liked: The demon's cloven feet Xena pissed off reaction when Michael stops her plunge into Hell: Michael: Are you insane: Xena: Depends on who you talk to. I thought the different wings were cool: Guardian angels- white; Archangels-green; demons - leather. Great make-up and special effects were very good if a bit busy. No Emmy nominations for specially effect or make-up was a shame but Joe won for dramatic underscoring (which was very effect in the scene where X & G were taken down from the crosses).
