Back when `Ides` first aired, I remember a thread, maybe on Chakram, but anyway the thread concerned angels and how "awful" this intrusion of Christian mythology was. I pointed out the parallels between what we see in `Ides` and the Myth of Er contained in Book X of Plato's Republic. (although, interestingly enough, "Er" is one of Joseph's ancestors according to Luke 3:28) Needless to say, Plato was rather more than a bit Greek and substantially pre-Christian (427-347 BC). "So here he [Er] watched the souls departing by two of the openings of heaven and earth ... [skipping description of the judging of souls] ... they [souls, some in pairs] come to a place whence they can see stretching from above through all the earth and sky a light straight like a pillar, most resembling the rainbow but more brilliant and pure." The very WORD angel is of Greek origin (alpha-gamma-gamma-epsilon-lambda-omicron-sigma), and, indeed, is first well-attested and popularized by Plato in this very passage. So, while I suppose the Christian Sunday-school image is what first comes to many people's minds when they saw the angelic spirits of Xena & Gabrielle, that isn't at all the ONLY thing that one could think of. Plato himself used the very kind of image that we saw in `Ides` for the conclusion of his longest work. What I love about Plato's use is that Book X of the Republic is mostly about what rotton crap poets and poetry are. Naturally, this needs to end with a thoroughly poetic myth. So I saw in the admittedly treacle-on-iron (great image md!) ending in `Ides` - essentially, what crap crucifixion-as-worthy-sacrifice is, so let's make the greatest of contrasts. Although I'm not that upset about no extras I am disturbed that there is no closed captioning. I think with DVD technology there is no excuse for this. I think if the region 1 DVDs are produced with out close captioning P-D should be aware that they are slighting the hearing impaired - it is available (the FIN DVD had closed capioning both as a DVD option and on the episode itself) so there is no excuse. Hopefully Creations will get off the dime and get a license for DVDs and make season 2-6 with extras. It will have to decide what to do and stop taking polls about it. The company has lost an opportunity here. DVD technology is here and its going to replace VHS especially when the recordable DVD become more avordable in the next year or so. I wrote that the tapes I purchased for S2 (and the ones I have seen for S3 and S4) do not have the closed captions, and the PAL (region 2) DVD's do not -- but the system in use with PAL (Teletext, or something like that) is not commonly recorded on DVD's, unlike closed captions in NTSC (the region 1 standard -- including the U.S.). Callisto never took orders well. In Intimate Strangers she just couldn't follow Ares's orders either. You are very right - her Hell is her obsession with Xena. When Xena was on the verge of winning and escaping Callisto just couldn't tolerate it. If she was ever interested in following "her lord's" orders she could have just followed Xena and kept tempting her until she found a weak point. Nope all she evr wanted was another crack at Xena and I doubt if she really cared about Satan's plans. Before anyone panics: unless and until viruses start spreading through ASCII text (something which is currently impossible), you will never get a virus by opening a message sent to chakram-refugees. smoe.org's majordomo list management software is configured to strip all attachments from messages sent to list addresses. (For the same reason, anyone who attempts to send any sort of file attachment to the list will not see it make the list.) Unfortunately, if a message like this comes through masquerading as someone who is subscribed to the list, it is going to show up on the list. I could do something which would bounce all messages with the word "Klez" or even "virus" in them to me for approval, I suppose ... if we start getting flooded with these things I may well do that. While as Lynn pointed out we haven't heard that the DVDs are going to be without captioning, we haven't heard for sure that they're going to be with them, either. This is definitely something I would want to find out, and if the answer is "no", lobby hard for it to be included on all future releases. This is a matter close to home for me: my sister, who is solely responsible for my starting to watch X:WP in the first place is hearing impaired, and relies on closed captioning to be able to watch any television at all. Non-captioned videos and DVDs are worthless to her, and it fries all of us when we come across one. Xenites come in all shapes, sizes, colors and abilities -- there shouldn't be any barriers for anyone to be able to enjoy the show on video or DVD. I can't quite see Eli and his followers successfully pulling a rescue off but then again maybe this would given Eli a chance to have his spiritual victory. This also doesn't solve one other little problem - Xena had to get pregnant because Lucy was pregnant. Somehow you got to get somekind of daddy in here (of course we could just said Gabrielle did it in Succession during all that popping in and out of bodies.)
