Judging from what I have heard/read about how strapped ROC was for time, I'm guessing next to none. I think anything that comes from the dialogue in the episode has to be credited to RJ Stewart (the writer), not ROC (the director). We finally see Xena's horrific vision come true and Gabrielle decides what her way will be. It's an episode that has outstanding performances by Hudson Lieck, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor. This a deceptive episode. It is somewhere between a surreal vision and a straight forward narrative. It begins with Callisto in Hell tormented by oddly happy and off-kilter Gabrielle and Xena. Then we move to Caesar's erotic and deadly dream about Xena which is interrupted by the undead Callisto looking like a evil pixy. Then suddenly the narrative moves on to a straight action scene. Xena, Gabrielle, and Amarice are all nicely grounded in reality. We have then a rather straight narrative. Xena goes to Rome and Gabrielle meets up with Eli. Yet in it all we have the unsettling presence of Callisto by turns sardonic, cynical, and pleading; tempting Caesar with power and Xena with peace. We also have Xena's frenetic chase through Italy trying to get to Gabrielle's prison and her oddly unnoticed ride in the cart of the dead. Is Callisto somehow manipulating time and space so that Xena can get to Gabrielle in time for the crucifixion? Then the episodes mood changes when an enraged Callisto strikes Xena with the chakram. Everything freezes for a moment. For a second the world turns upside down. Xena to protector of all is crippled and the Gabrielle, the one who always needs to be rescued, becomes the fierce protector. The prison scenes are now quiet and contemplative. Even Caesar's assassination and X & G crucifixion are all done with a quiet surreal feeling that makes it compelling to watch. Then at the end we once again visit the metaphysical as we watch the spirits of Xena and Gabrielle disappear in a blink of an eye. Director Ken Girotti and especially editor Robert Field deserve praise for constructing such an exquisite episode. Let's not however forget the actors. Lucy is mesmerizing as the injured Xena. When she is hit by the chakram there is such a look of disbelief on her face that even the audience is stunned along with her. Then there is Xena's heart-breaking grief as Gabrielle abandons her way of peace for her. In the prison she so vulnerable and like a concerned child she pleads with Gabrielle not to cry and then like a contrite child she asks for forgiveness. ROC matches her in these scenes. If Xena is transformed into a child then Gabrielle is certainly the caring mother. Comforting Xena and telling her how much Xena has changed her life for the better - Gabrielle is the solid rock of Xena's existence. Then at the crucifixion Lucy adds just a little nuance to her performance that is wonderful - she shivers. On that snowy plain Xena the stoic warrior is cold and she shows it, the only real indication of how badly she is hurt is that one small involuntary reaction. Hudson Leick is in top form here also. Her Callisto is always fun to watch, Callisto is always unnerving and it's interesting to watch Caesar react to Callisto - he always seems uncomfortable - an evil he can't control. Callisto is his evil guide to an unknown god. In an odd reference to The Way Callisto echoes Hanuman's words to Xena about Krishna. When Caesar complains that his reward isn't going to work, Callisto says the reward was "just to get Xena's attention" and if he is patient "she will come". Of course Xena does come. She loses her trusty chakram to Callisto and soon learns that Callisto has plans for her as well. Callisto is so wonderfully sure of herself as she tempts Xena. She has always thought she has the key to Xena's soul. She tempts Xena with peace for her and Gabrielle - a happy ending for the couple. Instead she is confronted by a new Xena - one who is sure of her way. Guilt will not rule her this day and Callisto, the perpetual victim, is furious. Callisto turns on her in a moment of pique and violates Satan's orders and hurls the chakram at Xena with deadly accuracy. (sidebar: you notice only two people can ever wield the dark chakram - Xena and Gabrielle but yet the yin and yang chakram can be used by Xena and Eve and Gabrielle). That should be it for Callisto but she hangs around a spectral spectator at Xena's death. Sometimes just oddly fascinated as by Gabrielle's actions, then gloating at Xena on the cross, or just plain being peculiar as she catches snow flakes on her tongue all the world like a carefree child. Finally we have Gabrielle. ROC herself has said she was stunned by the violence of Gabrielle's actions in the prison yard. If she was shocked so was the audience. Gabrielle begins the episode in full peace mode or does she? At the fight on the pier you see a very anxious Gabrielle - she wants to help but can't decide what to do, then when Amarice is in danger she acts and dumps her attacker in the sea. Gabrielle can't stand by when people are in danger. She however seems to be committed to her way. When Xena decides to go to Rome to kill Caesar, for the first and only time I can remember, Gabrielle meekly agrees to be left behind. It is a fateful decision. While visiting with Eli she and everyone else is captured by Brutus. At the prison Gabrielle has no illusions about her fate - she knows she is bound for crucifixion. Yet she is still acting as Gabrielle - she saves Amarice again and she still is trying to learn from Eli. In a scene that will be eerily repeated in the courtyard, she meditates with Eli and announces happily "that she has done it". Amarice in disbelief asks what did she do and she says nothing. Eli explains that once you empty yourself of all emotion and thought you can be a perfect vessel of unselfish love. Amarice is unconvinced but soon Xena arrives. Gabrielle's relief is evident - Xena can do anything and I'm sure she is confident that they will all escape. Then in the courtyard while everyone is indeed escaping, Xena is struck down. Gabrielle stops and for a moment does nothing and in that moment of nothingness she is filled with a perfect but different kind of love. A love that is not passive in the face evil or threats to loved ones but one that will take up arms to defend them. It is an unselfish form of love - Gabrielle at that moments throws away her brooding over the state of her own soul and becomes entirely concerned with Xena's well-being. She acts and she kills but not out of hate but out of love - she may not be entirely aware of what she is doing but she is acting to save her friend in the only way she can at the moment. In the prison cell she is still trying to protect Xena and when Xena berates herself for making Gabrielle lose her way Gabby rightly says that no she has finally found her way - the way of friendship.. This marks a change in Gabrielle's character for the rest of the series. From now on we not only have a warrior but a woman who acts as Xena's protector - Chakram, Dem Bones, Legacy, The Ring all are episodes where Gabrielle acts to save Xena. She never again voluntarily leaves Xena's side. There also other great pieces of business here. Xena interrupting Brutus's bathroom break to announce her will be assassinated in Gaul (did she lie about this?) . Karl Urban dismissing another bounty hunted with the wrong Xena head by saying "Take Xena with you". It just a great episode. Agreed on all points. During Season 4, I was motivated to collect the episode reviews I posted to chakram and put them on my web site ( if anyone cares). I just went back and read what I wrote about this episode, and it's amazing how I can remember exactly what I was feeling when I first viewed it, over three years later. The "Gabspazz" remains one of my top three moments of the entire series. >Is Callisto somehow manipulating time and space so that Xena can get to >Gabrielle in time for the crucifixion? Now this is something that never occurred to me. What an intriguing thought. >Then at the crucifixion Lucy adds just a little nuance to >her performance that is wonderful - she shivers. Amazing. >(sidebar: you notice only >two people can ever wield the dark chakram - Xena and Gabrielle but yet the >yin and yang chakram can be used by Xena and Eve and Gabrielle). I guess this would depend on your definition of "wielding". Remember that the first time Xena saw Callisto was when Callisto caught her chakram ("You want it? Come and get it!" -- it's the sound my PC makes when I get new mail ). So if you have a broad definition, then you could say that Xena, Gabrielle, and Callisto all wielded the dark chakram. This is interesting, in light of the fact that Eve (who as you pointed out could use the yin/yang chakram) is sort of Callisto's daughter as well as Xena's. (This is something I wish they had explored more ... but that would have required that Livia remain Livia and not be Eve. Which, come to think of it, would have definitely been a good thing!) >Finally we have Gabrielle. ROC herself has said she was stunned by the >violence of Gabrielle's actions in the prison yard. If she was shocked so was >the audience. Oh, you're not kidding. When the episode first aired I was stuck watching it with one of my friends who only liked to MST3K the show, which was annoying in the extreme -- but the Gabspazz shut him up. After it was over, we both turned to each other and said, "Well, THAT was unexpected!" ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Davis Panzer's price for the X:WP set is >extortion. do you think? well, i guess in the interest of xena, i'm extortable. sad but true. unless there's a better offer in sight somewhere down the pike. i wonder if. . .oh what's that other company that sells xena tape sets that's so much more reliable than d-p even though they get their stuff from technicolor as well. i can't think. if i can remember who they are (i lost my bookmarks in my computer crash and have *no* memory of such things) i'll see if they're going to carry these as well. anybody got a clue who i'm talking about? you have to place phone orders on an answering machine but service is very prompt. sound familiar? md--still a bit red and mortified >============================================== >Meredith Tarr >New Haven, CT USA >mailto:meth@smoe.org >http://www.smoe.org/meth >============================================== >Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series >http://muzak.smoe.org >NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm >============================================== >========================================================= >This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. >To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@smoe.org with >"unsubscribe chakram-refugees" in the message body. >Contact meth@smoe.org with any questions or problems. >========================================================= ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. There's no need to -- I sincerely meant what I said, that people were grateful for the recourse they were able to get thanks to your efforts. I wasn't trying to imply anything else. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. The sales woman said I am on the special call list. Ain't I lucky? The gal said the DVD's would ship in 4 to 6 weeks. I think they are being a tad leading. The release date on the Davis/Panzer web site is listed as Nov. 30 2003. I figure the 2003 part is a typo but the end of November is still 10 weeks away. (or maybe a year and 10 weeks away) I intend to buy the DVD's after they are officially released. You can follow this link to the offer at the web site. http://www.adarastore.com/cgi-bin/xena-herc/X1301?ioXKHjxg;;39 BTW- For those of you who do not care to deal with Davis/Panzer Amazon.com sells all the VHS season videos and the Hercules Xena Trio. They have the Herc/Xena Trio on DVD. More interesting, they have a single DVD featuring the two Herc movies "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom". Those two movies being the first to feature LL and ROC. It would seem that somebody knows what Xena fans want. But the publicity on these has been invisible, at least to me. I did not know these Xena/Herc DVD's were even made. Getting out my wallet- Hawk ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
