Very possibly the Amazons themselves would also have preferred the polite fiction that Xena was merely 'advising' their queen. Still, Brutus was in no doubt about who was in charge: X (to Amarice): "Yeah, I'm sure they covered that in your tribe. Gabrielle has pardoned you. Let's go." Brutus: "Xena doesn't give many second chances, little girl." > Although Gabrielle herself > does not fight in the major battle she is an enthusiastic inspiration to > the Amazons. I have to ask, how could this be? How could a pacifist leader inspire a warrior tribe to battle? Gabrielle obviously approved > of the war and supported it. She isn't needed as a military leader but she > is needed a moral support for the Amazons. I found that scene, though logical, almost embarrassing. Gabrielle _looked_ so hypocritical, urging the Amazons on to fight while staying safely behind the lines. I know what was behind it, Gabrielle's conflict between her own conscience / Way of Peace and her obligations as Amazon Queen, which is a good plot point, but visually it just looked terrible to me. Even your argument about the queen staying safe from capture, though valid, doesn't really offset the unfortunate appearance of the scene. I think maybe she should have done what Marga did, delegated command of the troops in battle to someone else (Varia in Marga's case, though as it happened that didn't seem to stop Marga from taking a leading role). Aside from mere appearances, though, there's also the moral issue that if Gabrielle approved of the war (as you say), why could she not fight in it? OK, her Way of Peace. This is the same issue as how she could hang out with Xena for protection and not fight herself. But if her Way of Peace prevented her from fighting in a war, how could it let her support one and, more significantly, act as leader in one? I know this is all part of the build-up of Gabrielle's Way of Peace and its conflict with the reality of her life, which became steadily more untenable until it blew apart in Ides. And I suppose this is what TPTB were intending to show. > Also we have two new characters introduced in this episode. Amarice a hot > headed young Amazon who had real potential as a recurring character. She > obviously idolizes Xena but has distain for Gabrielle which gives LL a > wonderful opportunity to glare menacingly at the girl. Amarice however > would have been a wonderful character to see develop. Xena and the now > mature Gabrielle would have someone to mentor and teach. Xena could have > taught the girl discipline and Gabrielle compassion. Actually, Amarice initially had great respect for her Queen Gabrielle, which lasted about as long as it took her to find out Gabrielle's pacifist convictions. ;) She had a lovely line in sarcasm, though, which was at its best in this episode. She was also a remarkably good fighter, and played her part convincingly in letting herself be 'captured' to set up the ambush of the Roman troops. I would have liked to see her develop, as you say, but I think in successive episodes her character was less well written. Not badly, but just not quite as good as Endgame / Ides. It's unfortunate for Amarice fans that Jennifer Sky moved over to Cleo 2525. I think it's a sign of excellent character acting on Jennifer's part that there was no detectable similarity between Amarice and Cleo, she threw herself totally into the characters, I think. > When Brutus returns to Rome, he proudly > presents the Amazon treaty to Caesar only to see it burned as Caesar > arrogantly declares all nations must be in his power. Brutus is shocked - > his idol is not the unselfish protector of Rome but just another power > hungry warlord. Brutus now starts down that path to betrayal. Which culminates in Caesar's death in Ides.... I noted way back, that I kept wanting to see Xena kill Caesar for what he did to her in Destiny, and people kept reminding me that history prevented it. But, in this episode and Ides, Xena did indeed manage it, even if not in person. But more of that, next episode. ;) > Some quick notes: the episode had great music especially Ephiny's funeral > dirge, wonderful fight sequences, and the opening battle with Ephiny is > eerie and disquieting. Part of that was the camera work, showing the 'Amazons-eye view' of the forest. Just a little bit reminiscent of Rob Tapert's running-the-camera-along-the-ground trick in Evil Dead and FIN, or T J Scott's technique in Sin Trade. I believe her performance in this ep was among the most mature and nuanced of the series, especially the different responses to different critical characters. I love how it really underscored Xena's maturation, in terms of her genuine respect for the practical and moral opportunities Gabrielle opened up through her different perspective, her recognition of the difficulties in mentoring a young fighter who focused solely on Xena's violent actions, and her ability to achieve some emotional distance when dealing with Ephiny's death and her responses to Brutus and Pompey. It is Sept 11. I wanted to send an email to express my thoughts at this time. Sept 11 has been a hard day for me for the last ten years now. It is the anniversary of the death of a dear friend of mine who died in 1992. Heidi meant everything to me and I lost her. On Sept 11, I always take the day to remember her life. When I wake up, I place a picture of hers on the table and I light two black candles and let them burn the whole day. I play good-bye music and I talk to her. It's small, but I want to remember her life. Last year, I was devastated by the families and friends of over 5,000 people who will be joining me in this yearly ritual of remembrance and of grief. To those people, I express my deepest sorrow for your loss and my deepest love for you to help you through this day. And I will express this to you every year on this day, because I know what this day means. To everyone, I want to send a message: I want us to all remember what happened and to remember those lost. But even more then that, I want for us to not let the horrible people who committed these crimes win. They did this to bring terror, but they did not spread that, instead they spread something much worse: Hate. So to everyone, I ask you not to help them by spreading hate. I ask you to spread love instead. Spread it to those who need you on this day as they remember the life of a loved one lost. Spread it to the world by living every day with hope and peace in your heart. I leave you with these songs from Jewel, which I think say everything we need to know and remember when talking about love and peace for the world. On Xena's part, although she is uncomfortable about the plan /being revealed to her friend, is not defensive, instead she states her reasons /for the tactic. This is a long way from the two people we saw in The Price /each condemning the other for their decisions. No, I don't think the show's makers were being at all nice to Xena in this ep. It was one of the last eps written by Stephen Sears, who was always happy to stick a shiv into Xena. I think what they did was very simple -- Xena turned into a rotten thug again and proposed a despicable plan, burning prisoners alive. Gabrielle rejected the idea with contempt. End of incident. Xena did not give up the idea because it became "unnecessary." The issue of necessity didn't change in the few seconds before Xena proposing the plan and Gabrielle rejecting it. Xena backed down because she couldn't challenge Gabrielle in front of the Amazons. That's why Gabrielle as a non-fighting comander made sense. It was only as a Queen that she could stand up to Xena. If Xena had argued with her she would have risked seeing the Amazons fall apart, thus losing the battle before it started. As Queen, Gabrielle could tell Xena to go to hell with her sicko ideas. In The Price they made Xena's thuggery the whole heart of the episode. Then they realized that to do that too openly would cause them to lose viewers and the series would not go on as long as it could if they were more subtle. So they often made Xena's rotten behavior an incident in a larger episode, as in End Game, rather than the focus of the ep, as in The Price. I don't like this myself. I never liked Sears' and Tapert's contempt for Xena. I didn't like their repeatedly making Xena into a thug who couldn't control herself and couldn't be saved from herself except by Gabrielle's constant influence. They thought they were being clever turning the series into The Very Slow Rehabiliation of Hitler Show. I always wanted a positive view of Xena but we rarely got it.
