Yes, that's right. Though, could it have been a giant roc, and as such mythical rather than prehistoric? Xena did encounter the odd mythical beast - - umm, Gragus, Ares 'dog' for example, in Unchained Heart. A note to international fan club members -- there was some delay with the mailing of issue #19. They should all be in the mail by the end of this week. Sharon Official Xena Fan Club www.creationent.com/outback/fanclubs/index.html ************* Tidbits from the Official Xena Fan Club Newsletter #20. Thought you might like a peek into the Lucy and Renee interviews. Here's a bit from the Lucy interview when I asked if Renee had to stop any natural tendency she might have for Gabrielle to touch Xena in the early episodes: Lucy snorted. "She should stop herself from punching me! She went through this period of pummeling me in the stomach." "Did she really?" I laughed in amazement. "On screen or off?" "Off screen," Lucy laughed. "It's like having a terrier bite your ankles." She gave a big sigh. "Awww, you're making me miss those times." And from Renee's interview about her work in Macbeth: "I was astounded by Judi Dench's version of the candle scene in the video of Macbeth," I said in amazement. "You mean with the sigh?" Renee said. "That really haunted me after I saw the video. I kept thinking, 'Oh my God, do I have to do that? Should I try to do that?' But I still think of her. It breaks my heart just thinking about it. That wailing. That really gets me. I think I'm scared to go there. I'm scared to try something that broad. It's so brave of Judi to do that. I just love it. I've gotta try it at least once," she laughed. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. This I did not know but it makes sense. I am now ashamed of besmerching Cyrene's honor (I hope Xena doesn't find out). > > "We've seen her in that ugly brown feed sack at night. Something must have set her protective instincts off." I thought the brown feed sack was reserved for prisons. I don't remeber her ever voluntarily wearing the sack. In fact I remeber Renee saying that whenever they saw the sacks in their dressing room they knew Xena and Gabrielle were going to be in serious trouble. > > > " They forgot to tell us he escaped. The jails we have seen in the Xenaverse were rather insecure, and the guards were mostly challenged." Yes it does seem that the prison guards in the Xenaverse were quite lacking in intellegence so yes I can see Jett escaping alon with his father (who was in the same prsion). You know I wish we could have meet Joxer's parents - I always thought it would have been a great episode with Ted playing his father, mother and maybe a sister too. > > > > " Maybe she just found out that Paulina was really a thespian." It however plays very well as a stand alone episode. It introduces two new characters, Amarice and Brutus, both will play pivotal rules in Xena's and Gabby's lives, and two other characters die a violent death, Ephiny and Pompey. This is one of my favorite episode. First I really like Xena in this episode. When her and Gabrielle's friend, Ephiny, is killed she vows to defend Eph's people and she pulls out all stops to do this. She is relentless in battle - brilliant as a strategist and ruthless. Yet she does not depend on her dark side as she did in The Price for victory. She can pull back from a savage act when it no longer is necessary and she can show mercy without seeing herself as weak. She also knows when to change her tactics. When she captures Brutus she seems ready to let him die but Gabrielle objects. She releases the pinch because she not only wishes to please Gabrielle but also, I believe, that she quickly realizes that Brutus is more useful alive. With that decision Xena insures her victory. Brutus now indebted to Gabrielle for his life leads his troops in support of the Amazons in their battle with Pompey. He also respects the Amazon territory when the battle is over. More importantly she and Gabrielle use that act of compassion to set Brutus on a path that will eventually lead to his betrayal of Caesar. We also see a change in the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. Both seem to be more considerate of each other's perspectives. There is an amusing open sequence where Gabrielle is telling Xena how she is going to compassionately kill fish - there is a gentle teasing quality to the scene with both woman seeing the absurdity in Gabrielle's position. Then when X & G enter the Amazon village, Xena immediately takes charge but suddenly she seeks Gabrielle's permission to do this. Xena knows this is important because Gabrielle must maintain her dignity as queen among the Amazons and Gabrielle is clearly grateful for Xena's gesture. Later when Xena stakes the captured Roman soldiers out as a trap for Pompey's troops - a trap that would have resulted in their death by fire - Gabrielle is clearly horrified. She however does not attack Xena or criticize her - she simply argues that she finds this unacceptable. On Xena's part, although she is uncomfortable about the plan being revealed to her friend, is not defensive, instead she states her reasons for the tactic. This is a long way from the two people we saw in The Price each condemning the other for their decisions. We also see a change in Gabrielle. For the last few episodes Gabrielle has been a pacifist or at least trying to be a pacifist. Suddenly the pacifist is leading a warrior nation to war. What is odd is that Gabrielle never mentions her path of love. She seems entirely involved in the war effort. Yes she stops Brutus from being killed and the sacrifice of the captured soldiers, but this would have occurred if Gabrielle had never met Eli it really does not reflect her new pacific philosophy. Indeed she participates in a clever plot with Xena to turn Brutus against Caesar a plan that may result in either men's death. Although Gabrielle herself does not fight in the major battle she is an enthusiastic inspiration to the Amazons. Gabrielle's commitment to pacifisms seems to be wavering There has been criticism of Gabrielle for not fighting in the battle. Actually I find Gabrielle's non-combatant status in the battle a logically choice. If Gabrielle would have been killed or captured by Pompey the Amazons probably would have lost heart and been defeated therefore I am not disturbed by her not fighting in the battle. Gabrielle obviously approved of the war and supported it. She isn't needed as a military leader but she is needed a moral support for the Amazons. Also we have two new characters introduced in this episode. Amarice a hot headed young Amazon who had real potential as a recurring character. She obviously idolizes Xena but has distain for Gabrielle which gives LL a wonderful opportunity to glare menacingly at the girl. Amarice however would have been a wonderful character to see develop. Xena and the now mature Gabrielle would have someone to mentor and teach. Xena could have taught the girl discipline and Gabrielle compassion. I Brutus is the other new character. David Franklin plays Brutus as the honorable character that Brutus is reported to have been. Yes he kills Ephiny but it is in honorable combat. He is a bit smug when captured by Xena but when his live is saved by Gabrielle he is suitably chastened. Brutus's real flaw is that he is naive when it comes to Caesar he truly believes Caesar is the savior of Rome and does not want personal power and because of this he falls into X &G 's clever trap. Gabrielle offers Brutus a peace treaty with Rome. A treaty if accepted by Caesar would safeguard the Amazons but if rejected by Caesar would demonstrates his true motivations to Brutus. Brutus gratefully accepts and even allies with the Amazons. Xena then bluntly undermines Brutus's faith in Caesar pointing out that he has betrayed all his so-called friends, Pompey, Crassius and his very good friend Xena. When Brutus returns to Rome, he proudly presents the Amazon treaty to Caesar only to see it burned as Caesar arrogantly declares all nations must be in his power. Brutus is shocked - his idol is not the unselfish protector of Rome but just another power hungry warlord. Brutus now starts down that path to betrayal. Some quick notes: the episode had great music especially Ephiny's funeral dirge, wonderful fight sequences, and the opening battle with Ephiny is eerie and disquieting. Lastly the final scene of Xena comforting Gabrielle is one of my favorite . Cheryl A ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I was kind of surprised that LL did the narration with no fanfare. I had half expected them to play her up more as the [at least] the TV star of a female warrior series placed in the time of Amazons, Romans, Boudicea, Caesar and several other timelines!! I enjoyed it, but it did seem to drag a bit in some parts. Mark ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
