It had Paris Jefferson. Most of the Poirot series' one-hour episodes based on Agatha Christie short stories were excellent but the feature length TV films they did toward the end of the series, based on Christie's novels, were mostly inferior. (Christie herself preferred her stories to her novels.) This one was weak. Paris J. had an ordinary and not very big part as a suspect. She played an American. Ravinika, a bounty hunter, is found murdered in Cyrene's Tavern. Gathered for Gabrielle's surprise birthday party are a host of Xena recurring characters: Minya, Autolyicus, Lila, and Joxer. Xena having arrived at the inn sans Gabrielle is designated detective by Discord, the new Goddess of Retribution. Given a deadline by the Goddess, Xena finds everyone has a motive and no alibi. Even Gabrielle who arrives latter has motive to kill Ravinika. In the end we find that Argo with a mean left hoof killed Ravinika in self-defense case closed. There are some nice moments here. I liked Darien Takle's Cyrene's who is becoming a bit more loopy every time we met her. I love her non sequitur about Ravinika liking bruised pears. Xena looks like every child who has discovered that their parent may short a brick of a full load with a partner who just can't help pointing it out hence we have Gabrielle's sotto voce comment to Xena that "she's your mother". I also like Xena grumbling about having to sleep in a too small bed. It is also quite touching that Minya, Lila, and Autolycus all take it upon themselves to protect Xena from Ravinika. There are however some unsolved mysteries here: 1. Where was Gabrielle? Xena says she is going to meet up Gabrielle but we are never told where Gabrielle was. Was she attending an Eli meditation camp? Getting her mendhi freshened up? Visiting her folks? Did our couple have a little spat? Don't know and we aren't told. 2. Where was Cyrene on the night of the murder? Xena find her bed empty and Cyrene says she was pouring water on the coals. Does one do that? My grandmother had a coal cook stove and I never saw her pour water on the coals. Suspiciously Autolycus gives Cyrene some diamonds at episode's end. Perhaps Cyrene has little business on the side that Xena doesn't know about. 3. Does Xena ever undress for bed? In her mother's house she wears her arm bands and boots to bed. No wonder she's so grumpy all the time, she never gets a comfortable night's sleep. 4. When did Joxer (or the writers) develop amnesia? Joxer steals Jett's wanted poster from Ravinika's pack in order to protect him. He has obviously forgotten that Jett is serving a life sentence for trying to kill Cleopatra. 5. Where is Minya's thespian companion Paulina?. First Hower goes missing and now Paulina - I'm beginning to wonder if there is cellar somewhere where Minya buries old boy friends and thespians. That's it for now. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'm not saying Creation couldn't've handled his speaking/not speaking engagement with more finesse, it's just that if he was dissatisfied with what he was offerred, he could've gone straight to Adam/Gary to begin with and not air his "dirty laundry", so to speak, publicly (IMO). Also, his belief that Creation makes *millions* of $$ on cons is IMO erroneous, as he heard from Adam himself. As I raised in my Speakers' Fees posts several months ago on this list, I know from all my *hard knocks* arranging local Xenafests how much $$ it takes to put one of these things on, and it *ain't cheap*. ;P The speakers' fees are probably the most costly, and people like Hudson, Bruce, and even Mindy Clarke *demand* $5,000 up front, plus First Class air fare/hotel. Remember, Mindy Clarke *demanded* First Class air fare/hotel not only for herself, but also for her husband and son?!? IMO, that's *outrageous*, especially for a non-recurring character. ;=P Remember, the "star" speakers would charge even more (I don't know how much more, since I've never been able to book one. ;( ) Plus, there are staff salaries at the con to pay for, and rental of the location, and rental of any special equipment, which can run into the thousands of $$. In order to just *break even* on an event with several speakers, they'd need at least 500-1,000 people paying at least $50 to show up. At some locations (like Hawai'i), they don't get even half that amount of attendees (and Hawai'i people are ***CHEEEP*** so they only buy General Admission @ $20, not $50), so they take a big loss in those cities. So just because it seems that they have a brisk business at the Grand Slams or Pasadena cons, it doesn't mean that it's that way uniformly all over the country. And remember, they have office/staff costs and ongoing overhead to pay for because they run a continuing business, not just periodic cons/fests as a fan group might. I've also met/talked/worked with Adam and Lori (and Gary a little bit) over the years (and especially in connection with the Hawai'i Con 2 yrs. ago), and I don't believe they are out to shaft anyone, not the speakers nor the fans. I'm not defending Creation categorically and I'm not saying they couldn't do things better in specific instances, I'm just saying I know from experience how costly and how much trouble cons are to put on, so people need to take that into account when they make allegations about profit, treatment, etc. Anyway, just MO, - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ... I know there are some other _Farscape_ fans here. In a stunning and incomprehensible move, USA's SciFi Channel has decided not to renew the option on last year's two-year renewal of the show. That means that the current season, season 4 will be its last. What is turning out to be the series finale is filming now, and sets are scheduled to be struck this Wednesday. Now is the time for all fans of genre television to mobilize to save what has been (rightly, IMO) hailed as the best SF show on TV. A complete list of contacts can be found at . As always, please remember to be polite and succinct. If we flood TPTB at SciFi with enough letters, faxes, calls and emails imploring them to save the show, maybe they'll realize that Nielsen doesn't send boxes to people who watch genre TV (think about it, fellow Americans -- do *you* know anyone with a Nielsen box??). Ratings for genre shows are very unreliable for this very reason, and are thus a poor basis on which to make the decision to cancel a show of such high quality as _Farscape_. (This is basically what I just put in my letter to them.) I know quite a few Xenafans are Farscape fans too, which is why I'm posting this. SciFi Network (who apparently are - surprise surprise - owned by USA) have decided to cancel Farscape at the end of its fourth season and not make the fifth season they promised. Why does this sound familiar? Anyway, if you're a Farscape viewer or fan, please read the message below and bombard SciFi with emails or faxes or something. If it worked for Xena it might just work for Farscape. - ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [TheFarscapeLounge] FW: Farscape Disaster Date: Sat, 07 Sep 2002 11:08:31 +0100 From: Jen To: The Farscape Lounge - ---------- From: ushi@farscapeweb.com Date: Sat, 7 Sep 2002 05:23:53 -0500 Subject: Farscape Disaster Attending the chat tonight, DK, Ricky Manning, and Ben informed us very sorrowfully that Scifi has exercised their escape clause and will not be picking up Farscape for it's fifth season. The 11 episodes that they have just finishing filming and will be shown starting in January are the last of Farscape. There is very little time before the axes are taken to Moya- we must act quickly if we want to have any chance of changing the exec's minds. I live very close to creation and that doesnt mean I know everything about them because I know p[eople that work there. These cons are making tons of money. I am not gonna take the word of someone unless it is the accountant. The cost for gold seats etc. more than makes up many expenses. And what about free interviews and things that are charged for on video etc. Some things they get for free but obviously they have to merchadise and make a buck or 2. Expensses balance out. If they were just breaking even after all these years they wouldnt keep expanding into more and more fandom and wouldnt get bigger. Broke and break even companies fold. I like creation.
