And the guy has now decided, a bit late in the piece, that he wants >a bigger slice of the cake. ... or, he worked with LoDuca on something completely separate, and is now trying to steal the cake outright. I find the fact that he is just noticing the absence of his name on the copyright *now*, a full year after the end of X:WP and two after H:TLJ to be very suspect. I hope the judge assigned to the case will, as well. If he can produce incontrovertible proof that LoDuca has been screwing him for the past 7+ years, then of course he should receive what is due him ... but I smell a huge mutant rat here. If it really was him who wrote the music, don't you think he would have noticed that his name wasn't on the credits, the soundtrack CDs or the Emmy nominations a long time ago? I can't imagine that anyone in that position would seriously remain asleep at the wheel for this long. I would be interested to see any follow-up stories containing comment from LoDuca on this matter. I wonder if he even knows this guy. (In case anyone is wondering, this particular piece of cynicism on my part comes from the fact that most of the musical artists I follow who have been sued for "I wrote that first" copyright issues such as this have been vindicated. The plaintiffs in the suits turn out just to be hacks (or in some cases, total whackjobs) trying to make a quick buck and get their names on CNN in the process. This is why no musician with half a brain in their head will accept tapes from fans who are aspiring musicians, unless the fan has proof of official copyright registration of the music on the tape. Even if the artist does want to give it a listen to help out a fellow struggling artist, it's just not worth the potential hassle later on.) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I still don't quite understand what it is but it isn't underscoring. I ask a friend whose daughter is a a sound editor and it can be a cue that shows where the music shuld be inserted or just about anything like that. I gather there are hundreds of them and they are just little bits of music. There are however cue sheets put out on every episode that shows the music and composer so Kolton cetainly should have known he wasn't listed (and the fact there was no paycheck for 7 years might have also been a clue). I suspect he was hired to do some kind of journeyman composing and the question will be now whether he was an employee or a subcontractor of Joe DoLuca (apparently his beef is with him and not the producers). Since the article says it's a precedent setting case it may be that this is some kind of test case involving the union and employees of composers for film. It will be an interesting case because the arguments probably from Joe's side is that Kolton worked under his direction with Joe's orginal music as a guide and Kolton will argue all his cues were his own orginal music. So I don't know if there are any "bad guys" here or just legal wrangling over some union issue. Anyway this is one of the cannon episodes - it establishes that Xena and Gabrielle will forever be bound together. This is really a very imaginative episode. It introduces the concept of reincarnation and the mendhi. The most interesting thing of course is that we discover that Xena's future life is not as a warrior but as a saintly peace maker and Gabrielle is destined to be a warrior king. The gender switch and the age difference was surprising and it demonstrates one of principals of reincarnation - that although we are destined to always be with the same souls our roles will never be the same - parents can be children, lovers siblings, etc. In this incarnation Alti is very powerful because she has both spiritual and physical power. Xena and Gabrielle are basically used by Naiyima and the mendhi to bring Alti back into a time period where she is not so strong and thus destroy her and save the furture. The battle between Alti, Xena, and Gabrielle is one the most brutal of the series. Xena is beaten to a pulp by Alti's spiritual power and even her trusty chakram is used against her (a foreshadowing of Ides of March) . Gabrielle experiences the crucifixion vision for the first time (and gets an improptu hair cut by way of Xena's chakram). In the end it is Naiyima and the mendhi that defeat Alti, with Xena and Gabrielle used as mere tools. The intriguing premis here is that both Gabrielle and Xena's present lives are preparing them for bigger roles. Warriors perhaps better than anyone know the horrors of war so it is fitting that a great warrior would become a champon of peace. Conversely a poet and dreamer can envision a better world so it is also fitting that a bard becomes an idealistic ruler who takes on evil to save his people. There are also loads of unanswered questions. Xena and Gabrielle meet Naiyima when she is about to be sacrificed on her husband's pyre. Xena, no respector of culture diversity, promptly rescues her but it is obvious that Xena has been set-up. Naiyima obviously knew Xena was going to rescue her and just as promptly sends her off to the future. Although she seems a bit surprised at Gabrielle's role in defeating Alti she seems to handle that development without much thought. So my question is was Naiyima truly a widow or was she a spirit that inhabited the Widow Naiyima's body. If she was always a darsham why didn't the villagers suspect something. As a side note it would have been nice if Naiyima before floating off could have told the people to stop burning widows (it seems she had the power to change this custon per one of the incendiary mourners). Also one of the more interesting moments of the episode happens when Gabrielle materializes as Shati. After modestly covering her bare chest, Gabrielle hears about Kindin the savage warrior. I find it interesting that she at first assumes it's Xena. Gabrielle apparently doesn't have much faith that Xena won't revert back to her warlord ways in the future. It perhaps goes along with a recurring theme in the 4th season where Gabrielle is always questioning Xena's commitment to the greater good. I think it was a shock and not an unwelcomed one, for Gabrielle to discover Amenstra, Mother of Peace, is Xena, the Warrior Princess. By the way how many think the poor guy who gets killed keeping Amenestra from killing and who got the mendhi kit was Joxer reincarnated - I do. The Way is next post. After the Sunday auction where once again I did not get a bargain (why I don't just pay retail and get over with is beyond me). Hudson came out. She was more subdues than normal perhaps because her parents were in that audience. She called her mother on stage and to my surprise Mama Hudson did a who stand-up routine on motherhood - obvious showbiz runs in the family. Papa Hudson seems more retiring but very nice. So after Mama left the stage Hudson begins her kibitzing with the audience. Highlights: Hudson tells how she sat next to a fan on the plan who promised that she wouldn't bother her so instead Hudson bothered her all the way to Philly: she talked to couple of people on cell phones from the audience, got a lovely picture from her fan club. The funnies moment was when a little girl about five was brought up on stage. She was dressed as Callisto. Hudson was intrigued by the bushy blond wig and then scooped the little girl up and faced her mom say: "Remember when I got real fat in the stomach and I sad it was eating a peach pie well meet the peach". Then she said about being able to wear the little girl's skirt the girls mom took it off the kid and gave it to Hudson she put it on much to her shock she then said that she now can wear children's clothes and she's got to get something to eat. Hudson then went off to change clothes and came back wearing the jester costume fro The Bitter Suite which was being auctioned off for the Ellis Foundation. The bidding got a kind of slow start. It got up to about $1300 when Hudson's dad bid $1500 much to Hudson's comic horror. She begged us not to let her Dad spend her Christmas money on the costume. So that seemed to spur the people on and it finally sold for $3000. Then Anita Ellis came out and in revenge for disclosing that she was impressed by Deezle whatshisname from Triple X movie's stomach tried to sell Hudson's real dress but some how that didn't happen - maybe Hudson had to have something to wear home. We then did autographs and I got Hudson and her parents to sign my Angel Callisto picture - very nice keepsake. That's it. I was tired and went to bed - end of convention.
