You obviously believe in understatement. ;) I do understand your point, though a quick re-read of his article would doubtless remind me why I think you're being way too reasonable ;) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Someone commented that people who were aware of or familiar with the old English tradition of pantomime, now only seen on TV at Christmas, were more likely to 'get' the episode than those who weren't. I don't know how true that is, but maybe the fact you like it better on later viewing is because you're more familiar with the theme of the episode?>> I think this is absolutly true. You get a lot more out of this episode if you are familiar with the pantomome theatrical tradition. Certainly when it was shown here in the UK, it was well received. We certainly couldn't understand why some lists had been ripping it to pieces. There are a lot of traditional set piece gags here that were quite cultural. The Joxer story had some funny bits in its own right, but the thing I really liked about that segment was the pantomime dame gags. Those guys had the humour down perfectly, very much in the Edith Sidebottom mode. They played it up without going over the top, which is a fine distinction. Even the joke about getting at Joxer's "crown jewels" was beautifully delivered - a real adult gag. I do wonder who they were kidding with the "inner child" speech. It sounds like the sort of speech you would make as a friendly leg pull of someone. This episode is fun and a good contrast to the much heavier episodes that follow.
