Possibly Lucy's pregnancy helped contribute to this, but then I recalled season 1&2 eps (like The Price) where this is suggested. I believe I read somewhere that RT from the beginning saw Gabrielle's carrying on Xena's legacy. Xena's question in AFIN -- "Gabrielle, what would you do?" -- is especially striking to me as we retrospectively review older eps. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. As I mention in another post, it was Gabs who paved the way for Xena to consider other options -- just as in The Price or later with Brutus. I took Gabrielle's comment as a mixture of wry humor and truth. I happened to like the way it suggested more equal footing with Xena, as opposed to a self-effacing "aw shucks" position of official sidekick. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Actually, though, it is Gabrielle who once again urges Xena not to prejudge or act too quickly, who cracks the door for both Xena and the daughter to resolve the situation without more bloodshed. I also thought there was a parallel with Maternal Instincts, when the Horde father's cry of pain at losing his daughter struck a chord with Xena -- humanizing him, as she may have recognized it as an echo of her own cry when she lost Solan. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'd say a more likely reason, certainly in the case of Lucy's family, is the fact that there have been three kidnappings or attempted kidnappings for ransom in NZ in the past year, and Lucy's on the 'rich list' here. That's probably a higher risk here in NZ than the 'unbalanced fan assassinates star' scenario. OTOH, in the US where LL wouldn't even rate in terms of money, but there are far more (unbalanced? :) fans, Lucy and ROC's personal safety is probably a higher risk. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Well much to my surprise really enjoyed seeing it again. Alicia the little girl was much less annoying this time around even if she still sounded like a munchkin on helium. Alex Tyding is very sweet as the Love Goddess smitten by the little girl. Gabrielle isn't as jerky as I remebered. It is always fun to see Gabrielle and Xena bicker. I have to say some of their interactionn is funny. Much to Gabrielle's annoyance she discovers that her beloved BGSB is missing and has been stolen, not by a fashionable beaver, but by Xena looking for rope. This begins the minirift. The violation of the BGSB makes into Gabby's Tyrella story in avery amusing psychbabble way. Then Xena volunteers to cook some fish and then can't find the frying pan, the salt, the sugar (why she wants that for fish is a frightening indication of Xena's cooking skills)and is so helpless that a frustrated Gabrielle has take over grumbling to Xena "to give her the frying pan before she hurts someone". Then Xena promptly sits her butt down and does nothing unti sent off for water. Finally reduced to the fairygods-sister of dirty dishes in Xena's fairy story Gabby storms much to Xena's concernation. Gabby then straightens out Aphrodite, returns to Xena in time to help take down the bad guys, and the little Xena family is reunited - Ahhh. The Tyrella stories are cute as Gabrielle, Xena, and Joxer inadvertantly reveal their attitudes. Gabrielle mifted over her missing shirt has Xena as the ugly step-mother with intimacy problems. Joxer of course woes Gabrielle. Xena doesn't need a prince for her happy ending just some one to do the irritating domestic choes so she can go fight the bad guys. One interesting point that this episode brings up is also one that is alos brought up in Daughter Of Pomira. we have all seen youn Xena - mean, cynical, a terror to small children. Yet in DOP she obviously was fond enough of Rahl's child to give her a gift. Rahl and his wife if not overjoyed at her appearance certainly aren't frightened of her and readily accept her help. Then we have Alicia and her kindly father who is an old friend of Xena presumedly back when she was evil. Add to this list Goliath, and the Hebrews from A Royal Couple Of Thieves and we seem to have a very different picture of Xena. I have often wondered if Xena sometimes exagerated her evil character since it is usually through her words we hear of her evil deeds. While certainly no angel I think Xena always had a soft spot for gentle and innocent. Well that's it for now. Here's what I have to say: DON'T WASTE YOUR DINARS! The video touches base on most of the actors, but only for about two minutes each and the best actor, HUDSON LEICK, isn't even included! Top that off, don't bother buying it hoping for the Claire and Alex performance. You don't even get a hint of it, much less the whole thing. There's only CLIPS of some of the singing, but the best performer, Adrienne doesn't get a sound bite for her voice. You get a TOUCH of Tim, Ted, Ebonie and Darien, and that's it. Then let's talk about the clips themselves: Having ATTENDED the con, I can tell you that though some of the clips make you laugh or touch a cord (the stars thanking us for our support and such), most of the clips are no where near the best moments from the actors talking. I would have loved to have seen Tim's story about how in "Chakram" Eli kicked Ares' ass, I would have LOVED to have had Adrienne's live performance of Livia's yell. How about that little swearing session with Claire. Alex lying on the stage and about a hundred other great moments that were never touched. The video is ONLY 54 minutes, and about 3 of that is just fast clips with the "Xena" theme playing over them. I say: Hey Creation, give us the ENTIRE event! I LOVE my Lucy and Renie tape (though I don't agree with all the editing cuts) because it's the WHOLE thing, it's over 2hr (fully worth the cost of $40 US even with the low Canadian dollar) and it helps us to remember the moment. This poorly put together II tape (which is $20 US, so it ran me $32 Canadian) is a poor second release. Let's see a FULL release to Hudson and EACH of the cabarets at LEAST! Come on! It's all about the money for Creation anyway, so squeeze our hard earned dollars and make four more tapes: Hudson, one for each cabarets and one for the other actors! I'd buy a FULL tape, but there's no way in Tartarus I would purchase another poorly put together, bad pick tape. :P BATTLE ON XENA! Going's Whoosh article will have us all "checking it out" and I am certainly no exception." That was one of my first reasons for almost not posting anything about the article. I felt I would give the writer more attention than he deserved but I was so upset about it I knew I had to get my feelings off my chest. Perhaps I should have written the writer but frankly he scared me a little. > " One thing I find interesting is that those that who have expressed their disdain for FIN and ultimately XWP and all those involved with the show, are the ones who have chosen the low road trampling on the values (respect for opposing points of view and freedom of expression) they espouse to stand for (and feel are being persecuted for)." Indeed many of the people who were upset with FIN were fan fiction writers. It was odd that the same people who took it upon themselves to "borrow" another person's creations and to write there own version of the characters stated they could do this because of artistic freedom. They then turn around a critize the actual creator of those characters for exercising that very freedom. " I am probably not a stereotypical Xena fan, but one of the things I enjoyed most about the series (including the FINale) was the ability for each of us to draw our own conclusions. We were always given the chance to see the glass half full or half empty. " The best part of Xena was that you could view the show on so many levels and that there were and still are lively discussions over the meaning of each episode. To stifle that is to destroy the joy of this fandom. > " It seems that G. Going feels better making accusations and judgements on the cast and crew's hidden agenda.....certainly his right to express his thoughts, but why does it have to come down to personal attacks. How can you elevate your point of view by putting others down. " Personal attacks demonstartes a lack of rational argument. You can argue the merits of FIN on a number of grounds from writing to acting to direction but obviously this guy can't do this so he resorts to ad hominum arguments. " Lastly, G. Going's comment about Lucy taking all the money with no> regard for the fan's contributions is just plain mean spirited. I have seen Lucy on a number of TV shows as well as the Pasadena convention tape, and I think she knows full well how much her fans support > charities and her appreciation certainly seems sincere. " It is the actions of a scoundral (nice word) to attack anothers intregrity without cause or knowledge of that person. Indeed Lucy seems to have always given credit to the fans for their generosity. It makes sense to this in fan publications since that is whom she is addressing > "There are 2 sides to every coin and there is no right or wrong.....sometimes you get what you hope for and sometimes you go home emptyhanded.....but the journey makes it all worthwile." Indeed the journey of Xena and Gabrielle was the fun and like most life journeys the ending has one who goes on and one who is left behind. I suspect that those who hated FIN haven't yet accepted that truth. CherylA > > CJL ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Indeed every time read the criticism of Rob or Lucy for getting rich off the fans or that the character's belong to the "fans" I think - you didn't create the characters, go to a studio and convince them to buy the show, create a production company, hire a cast and crew, be financially responsible for the production like Rob. You also didn't work 12 hour days often in uncomfortable conditions, get whacked by stuntmen, diet to fit into skimpy costumes, or do all this while pregnant like Lucy and Renee. It seems that once she go her own army, she became a bit more disciplined (as suggested by her avoidance of harming children) and picked on people her own size. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
